[edit] Does competition cease when you are young?
Why don't any of the old professors compete publicly? I know that they do research, but still, there should be some way for people to be publicly impressed by how smart the professors of their institutions really are.
I reckon that there should be some kind of automatic competition that all research fellows are required to participate in, there probably is - but I'm not too sure about this. It would be interesting to find out about this anyhow - just to see which institutions really *do* have the best talent (sometimes looking at the last million research papers that someone has published isn't as revealing as seeing them solve a dazzling problem in a short time period.

P.S - Yes, I know that Viva's are stressful enough, but one has 3 years to complete a viva!
