Talk:List of largest lakes of Europe
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I just added Neusiedler See, however only 240 km² of it is in Western Europe, as it also crosses the border to Hungary. I felt however that it was necessary to write the full size of the lake. Jonmagne 16:24, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
I decided to add some lakes from Scandinavia. I have not added them all, as I feel this list is getting out of hand. Who decides if a lake is among the largest lakes? I suggest limiting it to perhaps the 10 largest lakes of Western Europe. Also on geography, we need to be consequent throughout the Wikipedia. According to the article about Western Europe, the current understanding of it is as shown on the image to the left. There is another definition in the same article, which is defined by the United Nations. However, this article has not been true to that definition either, since according to the UN, the United Kingdom and Ireland are part of Northern Europe, and among others Italy is part of Southern Europe. The UN definition is however too narrow for an article like this, and is indeed only intended for statistical purposes. I noticed someone have earlier removed a lake from Austria on the grounds that the article is only about Western Europe... since when is Austria not in Western Europe?! It's clear that people are not looking at the facts when editing this article. I will continue to add lakes from Scandinavia if they are removed since Scandinavia is absolutely in Western Europe, unless someone can come up with really good evidence that keeping Scandinavia out of Western Europe is solidly founded on other articles on Wikipedia. Or we can use the UN definition and kick out Ireland, the UK, Spain, Italy and a few others ;)

I take it, that Scandinavia is not included in "Western Europe"? Because there are three lakes in e.g. Sweden that are larger than the largest one the current page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V%C3%A4nern http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V%C3%A4ttern http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%A4laren
I take it that at least Sweden is in Western Europe, which is why I have allowed myself to change the list, taking the information from the respective entires in the english and swedish editions of Wikipedia. Also, the Müritz is properly called just that, not Müritzsee, which is the name only for the southernmost part of the southern end of the Müritz itself.

Also missing are at least two lakes in Norway: Mjösa, 368 m2 Femund (Femunden), 202 m2. FØ, Norway

[edit] Selected region
Why only the Western Europe instead of the whole continent? — JyriL talk 20:59, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
- It is odd to use the old political West in a geographical list. I suggest that all lakes > 100 km² in Europe are included on this list. I don't think it is wise to use sub-regions such as western Europe because they're so unclear. After all, there are not that many large lakes in the Eastern Europe if you don't count Russia. — JyriL talk 00:25, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Page move and expansion & merge
If nobody opposes, I'll combine this article with Largest Lakes in Europe (Western, Central & Eastern) and move the page to List of largest lakes of Europe and include lakes from the rest of Europe. Even if the size of the list doubles it still isn't very large. — JyriL talk 10:30, 29 August 2
- Actually, there are not that many > 100 km² lakes (although this may be incomplete):

[edit] Azerbaijan is not in Europe
I see that a lake (or rather a reservoir) in Azerbaijan has been added. This is not a European lake and belongs somewhere else. Antipoeten 03:29, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
- Depends how Europe is defined. Based on the map in the article the lake barely belongs within the borders of Europe.--— JyriL talk 22:56, 17 November 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Finnish lakes
I recommend someone to look at this list in Finnish. It includes some lakes that might be included in your list. http://personal.inet.fi/koti/kauko.huotari/jarvet.htm Antipoeten 03:32, 4 September 2007 (UTC)
