[edit] Linking to scientific names
This list originally included Latin names, but did not link to them. I included the links, and as a by-product, just by looking for list entries where one link was blue and one was red, I was able to find several useful things.
Where the original link was red, but the Latin name link is blue, we do have an article on the fish, but not under the "common" name:
- rose bitterling, Rhodeus ocellatus
- Korean rose bitterling, Rhodeus uyekii
- slender bitterling, Tanakia lanceolata
- flat bitterling, Acheilognathus rhombeus
- false dace, Pseudorasbora parva
- white-spotted char, Salvelinus leucomaenis
- Asiatic ricefish, Oryzias latipes
- ricefield swamp eel, Monopterus albus
- Siberian sculpin, Cottus poecilopus
- sweet smelt, Plecoglossus altivelis
- striped puffer, Takifugu xanthopterus
- tiger puffer, Takifugu rubripes
I created redirects except for striped puffer and tiger puffer, because I wasn't sure that those names were unambiguous.
Where the original link was blue, but the the Latin name link was red, the situation was a little trickier. In one case, the common name actually went to the right fish:
- Korean sharpbelly, Hemiculter eigenmanni (the Latin name appeared to be a synonym, and I created a redirect)
In all other cases, the common name link went to an incorrect article:
- grayling, Thymallus articus jaluensis (Latin name appears to be a synonym)
- gudgeon, Gobio cynocephalus
- liza, Chelon affinis
- ice fish, Salangichthys microdon
- black bullhead, Pseudobagrus koreanus
- slender catfish, Silurus microdorsalis
- pond smelt, Hypomesus nipponensis
- mandarin fish, Siniperca scherzeri
- spotted goby, Acentrogobius pellidebilis
I am still making some effort work out some of the confusion, creating disambiguation pages and redirects and so on.
Anyway, my point is to encourage editors to please include a link to the Latin name of a species, especially when the there is any doubt about the English name, and that in a long list like this one, there inevitably will be doubt about many of the English names.
