"This is a list of the first man/woman/animal/etc to do something." -- Whoah, this could easily get out of hand. How about an external link to Guinness Book of World Records? -- http://www.guinnessworldrecords.com/

This is not a page of records. Ye sthe guniess book of records does soemtimes say the first. But its nto what the guniess book of reocrds is for. Its for the fatsest richest most, etc. - fonzy

You could say list of islands could get out of hand.

Well, if you want to do it seriously, it will get out of hand. The first human that ...., there are thousands of them, and more every day. E.g. what about princess Astrid, the first woman to get the right (in 1991?) to succeed as queen of Belgium ? FvdP 23:39 Oct 22, 2002 (UTC)

anyone want to help me with this? - fonzy

What about science? I find it hard to think of a first in science unless you speak of discoveries, theories or systems like in:

Is this to be considered a first? If not what would a first in science be? -- Mic

Like FvdP I have serious doubts about the wisdom of having this page at all. We need to have clear rules about what should and should not be included, or not have the page at all. Without such rules the whole thing can get bloated and be totally uneven in coverage, as has been alluded to in the discussion above. Geoff97 22:57, 2 Jan 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Requested move

List of firsts → List of first people — The current title is too vague. It could be a list about natural, animals, or ficitonal firsts. My suggested title is only a little better, so I would encourage other suggestions. Cigarette 19:58, 1 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Discussion

  • Rename to List of first occurrences. "First people" implies natives. I'm not sure this list should even exist, as its scope is too broad. –Pomte 04:05, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
Aboriginal peoples in Canada only suggests "First Peoples" (with the caps and the plural) as a name. First people and First People don't even have redirects there. I don't think anyone would be mixed up except a handful of Canadians. Cigarette 19:18, 7 April 2007 (UTC)
Fair enough. But the list doesn't only deal with people. –Pomte 05:38, 8 April 2007 (UTC)

This article has been renamed from list of firsts to list of first occurrences as the result of a move request. --Stemonitis 08:56, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

It has since been moved back, though I am indifferent. –Pomte 03:53, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] First Woman

There seems to be a lot of "First Woman" items in the list. It seems a little gender bias. Maybe we should try to balance it and find the first man to do a lot of the items (obviously certain things ie. "First man to wear high heels" would not apply) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.216.45.230 (talk)

Maybe it's because the first man to do/be something was often the first human, and some positions like Emperor are male by default, so there's no point in saying "first man to be an emperor". Right now I can't think of anything that women traditionally do that are notable for men to start doing (first man to be a midwife?). –Pomte 19:54, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Pope?

Here it says Siricius was the first bishop of Rome to be called pope, but the Siricius article says he was the first to be called Pontifex Maximus, and the bishop of Rome article says Boniface III was the first to be called pope. Theshibboleth (talk) 12:09, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
