[edit] Internet Cats

Internet Cats; from Caturday macros to the most famous ones, we have ALL seen them. If you have a whole article on Rapcat and a list of cat-like pokemon, there is no excuse for exclusion of knowledge. I propose that the most famous of Internet cats be included: Longcat, Limecat, Speedycat, Happy Cat (the one certain morons call the 'I can has cheeseburger' cat), and such. [edit] Help me out

Help me out here--the "appalled with two Ps cat"--? Berke Breathed character? Orange, frazzled, sits splay-legged, whiskers crimped and haywire... If I could name what I can see.... --KQ

Bill the Cat. - Montréalais
Thanks! That's been nagging me for days. --KQ

Would the Pink Panther count as a cat for this list?? -- Anonymoues 09:33 Oct 27, 2002 (UTC)

Why not? Hobbes is a stuffed tiger/real tiger. --KQ

Should we list Schrödinger's cat (or have we solved the paradox)?  ;-) --KQ

Is Midnight the Cat, a character on TV's Smilin' Ed McConnell and His Buster Brown Gang and later Andy's Gang, from the late 1950s, whose voice was provided by June Foray, later the voice of Rocky the Squirrel (and a host of others) too obscure for this list? Probably so :( . Pluck your magic twanger, Froggie! -- Someone else 05:00 Oct 28, 2002 (UTC)

I couldn't say. I haven't heard of about 1/3 of the cats listed already.  :-( --KQ
In that case I am emboldened to mention Puff, Sally's cat from the "Dick and Jane" series of reading primers (presumably US only?) of about the same time :) -- Someone else 05:09 Oct 28, 2002 (UTC)

There's surely some overlap between "Animation, comics, puppetry" and "Cats on TV"/"Cats on film", unless the latter two are intended to only include cats played by actual cats, in which case Bagpuss, the Pink Panther and others are misclassified. Ditto for dogs. Anyone sure what the intention was? Bagpuss 18:30 Jan 9, 2003 (UTC)

[edit] Bunnicula cat

If anybody can remember the name of the cat from the Bunnicula series, he should probably be added. Tuf-Kat

Was it Chhester? -- Zoe
ooh, sounds right, but I'm not sure enough to add it right now. Tuf-Kat
I am. It was definitely Chester. Now, who remembers what the dog was called?
--Paul A
That one I remember -- Harold. Tuf-Kat

[edit] St. Ives

What, no spoiler warning on the St. Ives bit? ;-) -- JohnOwens 07:02 Mar 26, 2003 (UTC)

It did actually cross my mind. But this is a work of information after all! user:sjc

Rags is a tiger, not a cat. -- Zoe

So, are tigers not cats, now? -- JohnOwens

Felis tigris vs. Felis familiaris -- Zoe

We have a few of the "big cats" (Tony the Tiger, Kitty, Tigger, Pink Panther, Simba, Rags) so I think it's cats in a broad sense... --- Someone else 07:28 Mar 29, 2003 (UTC)

So is this a list of big cats as well as smaller cats (if so, we can get rid of lions & tigers on the other lists). Or maybe we should break them up into sub-lists so that you can actually find them, instead of having to look thru the whole list?
~ender 2003-09-20 08:47:MST

To whom it may concern: Please feel free to visit Wikipedia:WikiProject Dog breeds/Categories because I think that structuring Cat articles and Dog articles could take a similar tack--would be nice to use same subcategories for consistency. Elf | Talk 04:11, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Confirmation required

In the Cats in song section I'm quite sure the Bike (by Pink Floyd) entry is wrong, there's no mention of a cat in it --Mattyw 17:42, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Someone added the following to the article:

  • The multi-legged "bedcats", six-legged wildcats that evolved from bedbugs, that appear in the Paul Bunyan legends

I can find no reference to these anywhere else. google:bedcat elicits only stories about cats sleeping on their staff's beds; googling for bedcat bedbug garners no hits at all; ditto for bedcat bunyan. --Phil | Talk 08:34, Sep 21, 2004 (UTC)

You could argue that they aren't actually cats anyway, and should appear in the fictional species/creatures (I forget the actual article name) if they are in fact mentioned in these strange legends. violet/riga (t) 09:53, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] CATS cats

In the listing of cats for OP's Book of Practical Cats, it was mixed somewhat with the musical as well. For instance, Victoria is a cat from the musical, not the book. (Victor is in the book, however). Quaxo is either the same as Mistoffelees (as a name he is referred to by before his appearance), or a separate cat (this issue seems undecided amoung fans). However, Quaxo in the book is in no way related to Misto (who also has never been known as the Magical Tuxedo Cat as far as I know). Grizabella is not from the book. She is from a poem that T.S. Eliot chose not to include because he considered it too mature for children. She is, however, a very important character in the musical.

Regardless, I've attempted to make the separation between book and musical more accurate by removing cats not mentioned in the book, and correcting a bit of slightly off information along the way (for instance, we don't know Munkustrap is a protector from the book. Only the musical). Also, there's a separate list for the cats in the musical CATS that are not in OP's Book of Practical Cats. And for kicks, I've also added more cats not listed currently (even though most of them, we know nothing about except they're cats).

Due to the fact that listing them in order of appearance makes little sense to me as the order listed by appearance is currently inaccurate anyway, the listing has been modified to be alphabetical which is, while boring, a bit easier to look up cats.

Cat "titles" (such as in Macavity: The Mystery Cat) have been removed for consistency as in the book, cats have many different titles/nicknames which seem unimportant to list. For instance, along with Mystery Cat, you'd have to list Hidden Paw, Napoleon of Crime, etc, etc).

Giant Tailchaser's Song list removes because it was stupid to have a vast list of unlnkined minor characters in an all-cats story, pasted below.

Don't longcat and BIKECAT count as real cats? Assuming the photgraphs are real, the cats depicted are quite real as well. --Breathstealer 07:52, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Cats on the Internet

Should cats that are in animations or comics on the Internet go under Animations, Comics and Puppetry or Internet? E.g., Mittens and Snowdrop, from Matazone.co.uk are under Internet, but Choo Choo Bear, who is from a web-comic (S*P) is not under Internet but is under Animations, Comics and Puppetry. Any ideas for a rule? - CM

Same with the Catbus from My Neighbor Totoro and Jiji from Kiki's Delivery Service-- should they be under Animation or Film or both? --Galaxiaad 17:24, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Cat-like Species

Should the fictional cat list also include such entries as Speaker-to-Animals, or more generally the whole Kzinti race, from Ringworld?

[edit] 'Miss Cat Ears' not a cat.

Could someone please stop adding 'Miss Cat Ears' under 'List of fictional cats in IT'? The 'character', if you can call it that, is not a cat - just a girl who wears cat ears.

Furthermore, the only reason it keeps getting added is so that a group of mentally disturbed Britney Spears fans can harass an innocent teenager living in Texas. PrincessDelphine 01:26, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

It doesn't matter if she's "not a cat" - the same could be said about many of the characters in this list. This is about characters who take on the ficticious role of a cat, which could be applied to Miss Cat Ears (thus her name). Please stop reverting this addition - you're not contributing to the article by doing so. SpearsLover 08:05, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
Oh, if you're going to discuss this issue, please sign your comments using four tildes. Thanks. SpearsLover 08:09, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
Yes it does matter - the 'character' is not a cat, therefore something that is not a cat should not be in an entry referring to fictional cats. I am contributing to the article by making sure it is correct. The character should be listed in the Catgirl article, as she is a girl who wears cat ears. I also have reason to believe that the inclusion of the character is meant to harass the teenager I first mentioned. PrincessDelphine 01:26, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Unlinked "Fat Cat"

I unlinked "Fat Cat" because the linked article did not refer to the character in question.--207.38.224.165 21:57, 5 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] *chan memes

Why do cat memes from iichan & 7chan get left in, while Longcat from 4chan gets deleted? It should logically be both or neither. Redxiv 08:47, 18 May 2007 (UTC)

shouldn't long cat be at the famous cat part he is probably know by at least 80 million people Balmazer

I am all for long cat being on this list... +9000 from me! Joshhunt (talk) 08:00, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Name of article

This List claims to be about "fiction"al cats, but lists several entities taht are not part of works of fiction. Mythology is not fiction. "Cats in song" do not actually always refer to an actual entity of a specific fictional cat ( "Smelly Cat" c.f. "Cat's in the cradle"). Schroedinger's cat is a metaphor, not a piece of fiction. Memes such as ceilingcat are not "fictional cats" either, they are photos with writing on them...

I'd go somewhere with this but I have a meeting.--ZayZayEM 04:22, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

Any cat without an individual article to support its notability should be removed. Any entry which is not an actual feline entity, but some form of cultural reference or title featuring "cats" should be removed. Without any dissent from this suggestion, I will enforce this at a later juncture. An article discussing the prominence of felids in popular culture using appropriate RS might be better suited over at Cats in popular culture--ZayZayEM (talk) 05:32, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Watchcats.gif

Image:Watchcats.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

[edit] Disputed

This article has been tagged with an {{accuracy}} tag for over three months – I wouldn't be surprised if it's been there for a much longer time. Yet there was no discussion section on the talk page to discuss it. So... why's it disputed? How can it be fixed? Should the tag be removed? etc... —Celtic Minstrel (talkcontribs) 20:32, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] The "it" pet Nonsense

In the past three months (and I suspect before that), there have been numerous edits, mostly quickly reverted, claiming that cats are the new "it" pet (whatever that means). Sometimes the claim is "supported" by saying it was published in some kind of journal or by saying it can be scientifically proven. Several of these edits insulted the user who had previously reverted them.

I think these edits are probably all by the same person, although it's hard to be certain since it's an anonymous user and there are several IPs involved. IPs include 128.97.146.151, 161.253.31.232, 128.97.146.107, 161.253.31.47, 169.232.214.68, 169.232.215.189, 128.97.146.151, and 128.97.146.107. There are others, including one beginning with 72, but those are the most recent.

I think this is getting ridiculous. I checked back as far as Halloween, and saw a wide variety in how it was phrased, but basically it's the same thing every time. Something should be done about this, but I'm not sure what. An IP ban may work, but it looks like the person's IP may change every so often or the person uses several different computers (unless there are several people doing this). Alternatively semi-protection of the page so that anonymous users cannot edit it – all these edits have been by anonymous users. I don't know which is better, but I do think something should probably be done about this.

[edit] Catwoman

Should we add her? :) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.33.234.115 (talk) 20:20, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

Perhaps her pet cat Isis, but no, she is a normal human. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.162.204.6 (talk) 10:27, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Wasn't her brother genetically altered to be like a CatMan though, a cat/man mutant would count right? And the Beast from X-Men, hes become feline in the past few years. Spider-Mn has an enemy the Puma or something too I think, been awhile since I checked anything but the Beast though —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.137.207.191 (talk) 11:11, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
No article on her brother, Catman is apparently a very similar but different villain, but the three of them don't seem to be actually cats, just cat burglars. Beast is feline now so I put him and the Puma is a native american werecat so him to. Works so long as you don't care what kind of cats they are, if theres a no big cats policy, Puma can go but the Beast isn't necassarily related to big cats, apparently he found a domestic cat that mutated to be similar to him recently, or something, stopped reading Marvel when Colossus came back from the dead.

[edit] Fictional ?

Usually we try to use a nicer word for things we don't believe in than Fictional, like List of Cats In Popular Culture. There are Gods on this list, parts of peoples religions and beliefs. You might also consider merging parts with the History of cats (which seems to be a Cats In Mythology except Egypt —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.137.207.191 (talk) 11:07, 2 April 2008 (UTC)
