[edit] Ascension Island/Tristan da Cunha

These two islands today are dependencies of the British colony of Saint Helena. However, Ascension Island was made a dependency in 1922. Before this it was a separate unit. Tristan da Cunha was made a dependency in 1938, before that it was a separate unit. Therefore they should both be added. It's hard to find any information about the population of the islands at this time. Tristan da Cunha had a population of 97 in 1886, whereas Ascension Island had a population of 170 in 1947. My figures are just rough estimates. Since they had no own flags at that time (Tristan got one in 2002, Ascension still has not got one), they will be represented by the flag of the UK. http://www.worldstatesmen.org/Saint_Helena.htm Antipoeten 23:13, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] German Pacific colonies

This is a list of the German Pacific colonies.

German New Guinea (Deutsch-Neuguinea, today Papua-New-Guinea; 1884 – 1914) Kaiser-Wilhelmsland Bismarck Archipelago (Bismarck-Archipel) Caroline Islands (Karolinen, 1899 – 1919) Federated States of Micronesia (Mikronesien, 1899–1919) Palau (1899–1919) Mariana Islands (Marianen, 1899–1919) German Solomon Islands or Northern Solomon Islands (Salomonen or Nördliche Salomon-Inseln, 1885–1899) Bougainville (Bougainville-Insel, 1888–1919) Nauru (1888–1919) German Marshall Islands (Marshallinseln; 1885–1919)

German Samoa (German Western Samoa, or Western Samoa; 1899-1919) Samoa (1914-1919)

I have listed some of these islands because they were to some extent regarded as separate colonies, for example they had their own stamps. This applies to Caroline Islands, Marshall Islands, Mariana Islands, German Solomon Islands, Micronesia and Nauru. It seems, though, that Bougainville was regarded as a part of German Solomon Islands, wheras Bismarck Archipelago was regarded as a part of Kaiser-Wilhelmsland. Note that the German Solomon Islands originally included several more islands than the two remaining in 1907, which were Bougainville and Buka. The rest had been ceded to British Solomon Islands.

German Samoa was not regarded as part of German New Guinea at all, it was an entirely separate colony.

[edit] Comoros

Whether the Comoros should be included under this name is hard to say.

Quote: "The Comoros were conquered by the Arabs in 982 and later, in 1505, visited by the Portuguese. The archipelago was by then divided in several Sultanates. In 1896, Mayotte and the three Protectorates (Moheli, Anjouan and Grand Comore) were incorporated into Madagascar. From 6 July 1897 to 9 April 1908, the four islands constituted the Colony of Mayotte and Dependencies, first administrated directly from Paris, then by a Governor, and finally reincorporated into Madagascar. On 23 February 1914, Mayotte and the three other islands constituted a subdivision of Madagascar. On 4 July 1914, the Comoros were incorprated into Madagascar without any specific status. On 1 January 1947, the Comoros became a Territory, which was transformed on 11 December 1958 in an Overseas Territory (TOM). Autonomy was granted in 1961 and extended by law of 3 January 1968." http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/km_hist.html

According to this, this territory should be listed as Mayotte or Mayotte and dependencies, as this was the status of the area in 1907 according to this site.

However, this site gives another version, which makes me keep the Comoros name for the time being.

Quote: "On 24 June 1886, the islands of Ngazidja (Grande Comore in French) comprised eleven sultanates, but, in 1886, the Sultan tibe (paramount ruler and Sultan) of Bambao unified them, Ndzuwani (Anjouan), and Mwali sultanate (Mohéli island in French) become French protectorates, French résidents are posted on the three islands; on 5 September 1887 they are collectively renamed Protectorate of the Comoros. On 9 April 1908, France declared the Comoros a dependent territory of its Madagascar colony. On 25 July 1912, it was annexed by France and joined with Mayotte as Mayotte and dependencies, after the ratification on 23 February 1914 subordinated to the governor general of Madagascar (Comoros dependent colony)." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Comoros Antipoeten 02:55, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Missing and wrong flags

The flag of Bhutan in 1907 was slightly different than the present, but I have not been able to find the flag used under Druk Gyalpo (Dragon King), 1907-1926. I also believe that the larger German colonies had separate flags. Antipoeten 03:13, 4 October 2007 (UTC)

Some flags were removed because of lack of license. Hopefully somebody could find the flags somewhere else, and license them. Antipoeten 20:20, 23 October 2007 (UTC)
I have now added the flags of the German colonies who had their own flags. Antipoeten 03:03, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
After examining this I find that these colonies used ordinary German flags. So I changed it back. the flag I posted for German New Guinea was the flag of the German New Guinea Company, used 1885-1899, the flags of German East Africa and German South West Africa were flags proposed in 1913, but probably never used, at least not in 1907. Also some other territories had flags proposed in 1913. Antipoeten 03:22, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Straits Settlements

The British Straits Settlements in 1907 included the following territories: Malacca, Singapore, Penang and the Dindings. In addition to this the islands of Christmas Island and Cocos Islands were administrated from Singapore, the capital the Straits Settlements. I could have chosen to split the colonies within this federation and give them separate entries. However, I didn' t do so, except that I gave the 'dependencies' of Christmas Island and Cocos Islands separate entries. This might of cource be changed. Antipoeten 23:22, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Russia

Population of Russia given in this article is wrong, and probably refers only to current territory of Russia. Population of whole Russian Empire was 181 million in 1916 according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Empire 62.179.74.97 (talk) 10:30, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

You may have a point. However, some parts of the Russian Empire are listed as separate entities, such as Finland (which was a Grand Duchy with some self rule), Poland, Bukhara and Khiva. Antipoeten (talk) 00:41, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
I checked this, and the census of 1897 shows the total population of the Russian Empire was recorded to be 125,640,021 people. http://wapedia.mobi/en/Russian_Empire_Census Antipoeten (talk) 00:53, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
I think this source is reliable on this issue. "Quote: The population [of the Russian Empire] in 1909 was 160,095,200, distributed in the six great territorial divisions of the empire as follows: European Russia 116,505,500; Poland 11,671,800; Caucasia 11,392,400; Siberia 7,878,500; Central Asian Provinces 9,631,300; and Finland 3,015,700." http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_New_Student's_Reference_Work/Russia,_Empire_of This means that the population in 1907 might have been about 150 million. I therefore change the page according to this, even if some parts of the Empire have their own entries. Antipoeten (talk) 02:25, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] British India

A contributor has changed British India to just India. This should be discussed, but it is a fact that there were several 'Princely states' in India at the time.

Quote from Wiki: "Specifically, the term "Princely States" (also called "Native States" or "Indian States") was used to refer to sovereign entities of British India that were not under the direct control of the British government but instead entered into treaties directly with the British monarch."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princely_state

I agree that British India (or the Britisk Indian Empire) is a difficult term, as it also included several territories outside of India, such as Burma, Singapore, British Somaliland and Aden.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_India

I am not sure if just 'India' is the right solution. Another thing: All of the Princely states that were not under direct British control should actually be included in the list. I await discussion about this. Antipoeten (talk) 00:37, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sierra Leone

The population figure of Sierra Leone is too small, as it only covers the 'colony proper' with a population of ca.80,000, whereas the population of the entire protectorate is about 1,000.000, according to several sources. http://www.1911encyclopedia.org/Sierra_Leone http://www.zum.de/psm/imperialismus/kolonialatlas05/atlas002.php I will change the figure accordingly.
