[edit] Merge Proposal
I feel that the key companies from this list could easily and more cleanly be handled as a few sentences the Economy of Slovakia article. There are already a couple of references in the Industry section, so other sections could be expanded along the lines of "notable Slovak companies within this sector are....". The non-Slovak companies in the list could be incorporated into the Foreign Investment section. Richc80 (talk) 21:20, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
- I find this list useful for quick reference, and it has its audience: 150 hits last month, none of them for edits. The charm of lists is that people go to them precisely when they don't want to wade through sentences. Its continued existence is no obstacle to discussing companies from it elsewhere at the same time. Keep the list; do not consider a merger until its proposed substitute is finished and ready to be compared and judged as better or worse than what already exists. ilmari (talk) 05:08, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
- Lists and articles should not be merged. —Guy Peters Talk • Contributions • Edit counter 21:03, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks to both of you for your feedback, appreciated. I guess my thought was that the equivalent category (Category:Companies of Slovakia) could easily serve as the place to go for quick reference, but I know some editors are not fans of that idea. Should the list stay though I think the inclusion criteria should be considered and clarified. Just wondering if it really makes sense to include companies that are just operating in Slovakia, I haven't seen that on similar lists. Richc80 (talk) 23:09, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
- If you look some more, you'll find enough countries that list both home-based and foreign companies under a heading phrased in that way. I agree with your literal reading, though, and understand your concern. Short of taking on the names of all such lists in Wikipedia, how about keeping the name of the page and sorting the companies out in two subsections called, say, "Based in Slovakia" and "Operating in Slovakia," or "Foreign-owned operating in Slovakia," or "Invested in Slovakia," or something appropriate you'll think of. ilmari (talk) 15:59, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
- After reviewing a few more lists like this it seems as though there is wide variety of inclusion criteria, ways of organizing the list as well as just the general quality. My thought is to start a discussion over at WikiProject Companies on establishing standards for this type of list, in collaboration with all editors currently working on them of course, to see if we can't get many of them up to Featured List status. And in the meantime, I'll remove my merge proposal. Richc80 (talk) 05:40, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
