This table looks not correct. World-gazetter.com does not provide estimation, but calculation only - what means extrapolation, so 2006 (late update of World-gazetter in even 2007) data are confusing readers. If you look on WP articles, you will find estimations, generally calculation values are higher than estimations: Sainshand 29386(calc.) vs 19548(est)- 1.5 times difference. Mandalgovi 15600(calc) vs 10500(est)- 1.5 times difference also. And Nalaikh is not city in Töv aimag, but Ulan Bator district. Bogomolov.PL 05:46, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

"Estimation" and "calculation" are certainly both just other names for "extrapolation", where different people will arrive at different results (world gazeteer mentions both but doesn't explain the difference). Independently of how the extrapolations are named, I don't think that giving their accuracy to the last digit makes sense. They should probably be rounded to the nearest hundred. How do we know which figures are most reliable? Unfortunately, I can't find city data in the statistical yearbook.

If Nalaikh is listed, then we probably should include Baganuur as well. Can we make sure that their figures aren't included with the rest of UB? --Latebird 08:06, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

Estimation. Estimation is not intra- or extrapolation. This data are not census data, but based on statistic observation: natural increase (burth/death balanse) + migration saldo (mechanic increase) + city limits changes balanse. In West Europe/USA estimation is based on social insurance statistics also, wich are even more accurate then census.

Nalaikh. I have düüreg population statistics 1992-2007 (for every year), so it is no problem separate Nalaikh, Bagakhangai and Baganuur from the UB total. In UB only the rest 6 düüregs are the city core parts (it is not my opinion only, city planning bodies have the same opinion). I'm preparing düüreg division scheme, but only Chigeltei/Sukhbaatar border I can't find in the mountains out of the city core. Nalaikh city and düüreg are not the synonym, but using khoroo division is possible to subtract steppe/mountains.

I only have the online issue of the yearbook. I'm sure there's a lot more information in the printed version. What you describe as estimation could just as well be called calculation, but I have no idea which nomenclature the statisticians use... It doesn't really matter as long as the numbers are as realistic as possible. --Latebird 12:20, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

Estimation is correct, statistics use this definition only (if this data are statistic observations result). The rest (World gazetter's data for 2007 for example) are calculations using average census to census increase, or some prognostic models extrapolations. Not statistic observations result. That is why Gazetter's calculations values are not realistic. After 2000 census were 3 zud years and UB exploded, in many regions was population decrease. Even cities were in depression.

About estimation officially:

"Population estimates - The population is estimated every year based on the results

of the last Population and housing census, on number of resident population, and

on vital and migration statistics. In the estimation of yearly population,

decentralized statistics are compiled from the following organizations in addition

to the centralized statistical data. These include Office of Immigration Naturalization

and Foreign Citizens (number of foreign officials and officers who live in Mongolia),

Ministry of Defense (number of soldiers and military), The Central Department of

Judgement Implementation (number of prisoners), Ministry of Foreign Affairs

(number of Mongolian diplomats and citizens living in foreign countries more
