[edit] Use in Other Media

Grendel as a name has been widely assimilated into popular literature and video games, such as Final Fantasy and Creatures. In fantasy works where the name is used, it usually refers to a beast or monster. In science fiction, the name has been used to denote viruses and evil computer systems.

Brian Trent's novel Never Grow Old links Grendel to being of the same species as the monster Humbaba from the Epic of Gilgamesh. From the novel: "Humbaba was dead. The Cedar Forest lay oipen to the axes of men, and it would be nearly three thousand years before the very last of Humbaba's race -- a grotesque mother and her deformed lunatic son -- would face true extinction under the iron swords of another group of bearded warriors in a land far, far to the north."
