[edit] Poker + Backgammon

Poker players like Gus Hansen are also claimed to be world class backgammon players. Anyone who knows which backgammon titles Gus has won? And Erik Seidel? In what backgammon events did he show a strong performance?

The reverse question applies to Paul Magriel: can we consider this world-class backgammon player to be a world-class poker player as well? Which of his poker victories would justify such a claim? JocK 17:32, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

According to the Dan Harrington page, he is world class at Backgammon and Poker(obviously) as well as winning a chess tournament. Winning 1 WSOP, getting to two consecutive final tables, AND writing the definitive book on tournament strategy is as good a poker resume as you will find.

Dan Harrington being a world-clash poker player can not be disputed. But what are his major achievements in backgammon? JocK 18:03, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

Several articles describe him as a "championship" backgammon player. I don't know what championship they are referring to, but I'll do some research.

(Same guy that posted the original Harrinton stuff)

Apparently Dan Harrington won the 1980 World Cup of Backgammon. If you google "dan harrington 1980 backgammon champion" you'll find a ton of sources for this:

I'm not sure if we should include Harrington's state championship in chess. Does that qualify as "world class"? Deepfryer99 (talk) 18:56, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

I see that Harrington is sometimes mentioned as "Backgammon World Champion Cup" winner for 1980, and sometimes for 1981. However, he is not listed here. -- JocK (talk) 20:46, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

I don't know. The link you provided doesn't have any sources and I'm not sure which competition it is talking about. Maybe it's a different event from the "World Cup of Backgammon"? Either way I think it's fair to add Harrington, based on the links I dug up. Deepfryer99 (talk) 01:11, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

I am not convinced (yet). Harrington seems to be missing from any credible Backgammon Champions list. See e.g. http://www.bkgm.com/features/HallOfFame/ . Note that this page even states that there was no 'Backgammon World Cup' in the years 1980-1981. Also, the Wikipedia article Dan Harrington is silent on any significant backgammon wins, although a lot of backround info on his excursions into games different from poker are presented. -- JocK (talk) 16:45, 27 February 2008 (UTC)

Well, I'll admit I'm not a "backgammon guy". So I emailed the people at www.bkgm.com to see if they can confirm or deny Harrington's 1980 championship. I'll let you know if they send me a response. Deepfryer99 (talk) 17:02, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Bridge + Backgammon

Terence Reese was world champion bridge in 1955, and is known to have focussed on backgammon in his later life. Did he achieve world class performance in this game? JocK 16:02, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Backgammon + Chess

Tunç Hamarat could be the first entry in the column chess. Being world champion correspondence chess will do as far as chess is concerned. But what about his backgammon achievements? The article on Tunç Hamarat mentions that He won several titles in international backgammon tournaments. Anyone who knows which titles he won? -- JocK 18:50, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Twice world champion backgammon Bill Robertie is often mentioned to be US speed chess champion. Anyone who can tell me what year that was and whether this would classify Robertie as a world class chess player? -- JocK 09:01, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

I would add Paul Magriel to this list. He was New York State Junior Chess Champion in addition to being world backgammon champion.Roserose1 16:39, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Gin Rummy and Poker

If gin rummy is considered a game of skill, then Stu Ungar should absolutely be on this list, as he's considered among the greatest of all-time in both pursuits. I don't know if there are (or have ever been) any "well-known" rummy tournaments, but if there were, I'm sure Ungar won them- not to mention his three WSOP Main Event titles. -- Kicking222 01:58, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

There have been some tournaments played at gin and I guess there still are. However, a great deal of high-level gin is played privately for a lot of money. There just isn't going to be much evidence available for those games. Unger was supposed to be one of the great gin players of all time but objective evidence is elusive. [edit] Draughts??

We're listing "world class" checkers players here?? If checkers is going to be included, then why not also add scrabble, dominoes, and parcheesi? Deepfryer99 (talk) 17:48, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

I think any game of skill with official world championships and an international governing body should qualify. International draughts fits these requirements. If the others do as well, then yes, I would vote in support of adding. Cheers -- JocK (talk) 18:15, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Robertie

Added Robertie. Apparently he won the speed chess championship in 1970.
