[edit] Page length?
Once all this information gets flushed out, it will be a very, very long page.
Keeping all state highways on their own pages would help prevent this, and it seems reasonable. --Rob 07:17, 26 August 2005 (UTC)
- That seems like an anrgument putting the cart before the horse so to speak. When there is so much information that one page cannot handle it all, it can be split off as needed. Until then, it makes more since to keep all the information centrally located. Indrian 15:16, August 26, 2005 (UTC)
- Nah, it's much simpler to start them off as their own articles. --SPUI (talk) 08:20, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
- That's what I'm doing; however, there is an anon who insists on merging all the new articles I create into this rather than leaving them as separate articles, thus creating unnecessary page-bloat. Kurt Weber 21:05, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
The list of Indiana state highways was manageable when it consisted almost entirely of short articles on short highways typically in the northeastern part of the state. Some people have added more, especially involving highways in other parts of the state, and it would be appropriate now to treat this page as a general statement followed by links to the various highways as is done for Michigan.
It would be appropriate to bave a tabular listing of highways by number with links to articles on specific highways. So instead of going through the numbing list of articles identified as "Indiana State Highway X", one might find the number '37' and get a link to "Indiana State Highway 37". Nobody is likely to confuse a '37' in this list with, for example, "Illinois 37" or "Michigan 37" because nobody looking for those highways would be loking at the Indiana State Highways page. --66.231.41.57 06:23, 20 January 2006 (UTC)
Someone helped fix up the page at List of Illinois State Routes. I'd go with that approach at this point... I think the Indiana State Routes page itself is up to 52 KBs. —Rob (talk) 16:23, 23 January 2006 (UTC)
Look- every other state has a list and seperate articles for each highway. This page needs to be split. I'd say there's somewhat of a consensus. --Rschen7754 (talk - contribs) 04:20, 19 February 2006 (UTC)
I agree. The highways need individual articles. I was trying to link to Indiana Highway 2 and it was a pain.Rt66lt 03:58, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
I'm being WP:BOLD and doing the splitting, adding the cat and stubbing. We may need a new highway stub, and I'll apply for it if needed. --Rschen7754 (talk - contribs) 01:58, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
I split off 1-100, and later I'll do the rest. --Rschen7754 (talk - contribs) 03:14, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
- Up to 200 done. --Rschen7754 (talk - contribs) 05:21, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
- I finally finished! Six months later. --Rschen7754 (talk - contribs) 17:52, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Name change
I propose that this page be moved to "Indiana State Highways" or "List of Indiana State Highways." The reason for this? "Indiana State Highway" is a proper noun. Also, if we have this taken care of, SFD and CFD won't have any reason to grant us the lowercase stub or turn us down for the category. --Rschen7754 (talk - contribs) 03:14, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
- Indiana has State Routes, not State Highways. --SPUI (talk - don't use sorted stub templates!) 18:57, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
- A funny thing happens when you start referring to state routes as a system, though. They become State Highways (in Illinois at least). It's odd that they refer to it as Illinois State Route x individually, but then call it then Illinois State Highway System.
- The moral of the story is that I don't think it matters whether this page or the Illinois state highways list is "List of Illinois state highways" or "List of Illinois state routes". —Rob (talk) 20:42, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
- We need capitals though regardless. --Rschen7754 (talk - contribs) 04:23, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
Moving to List of Indiana State Highways. If someone wants to move to Routes go ahead though, but we need the caps. --Rschen7754 (talk - contribs) 04:45, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
- State Roads is the correct name for indiana. For now, I'm moving them to Indiana State Road X, until they will even tually get moved to the truly correct name of state road X (Indiana). Sources here near the bototm of the page, "State Road 67". here, just control+f and search "state road". atanamir 02:00, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

- Umm... the project page calls them State Rotues. :-) See the links beginning with S.R. —Rob (talk) 18:56, 14 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Official Name
It's too hard to add comments in there, so i'll put them in here. It seems INDOT is a little confused itself:
- In fact, all the "notice to highway contractors" use state road.
- [3] Another instantoc of "state road number".
BUT:
So, you've got me. I'm at a loss. atanamir 06:04, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
- analyzing the URLs and type of doucment, it seems that when a "state road" is being planned, the planning committee calls them "state routes". But then after it's built, INDOT refers to them as "state roads"....? 06:05, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
From being a resident of Indiana for 20+ years and still visiting there from time to time, I have only heard the state highways in Indiana referred to as Indiana X, State Road X, Highway X, and Indiana State Road X, I have never heard the term route used. That may vary for other parts of the state though. --Holderca1 15:00, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] NPOV?
I fail to see how this article is not NPOV. Removing in 3 days unless someone backs the tag up. —Rob (talk) 14:34, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
- I put the tag on there because of the statement "Indiana has one of the most rational systems of numbering state highways in the United States." Maybe I shouldn't have slapped the tag on... I didn;t feel like changing the sentence. --Rschen7754 (talk - contribs) 05:02, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
[edit] SVG images needed
I would prefer the partial set of GIFs already existing be replaced with a complete set of SVG files, i.e. Image:Indiana 2.svg or Image:IN 2.svg. Does InDOT keep specs of its route signs anywhere? —Rob (talk) 19:50, 19 May 2006 (UTC)
- Seeing all of the GIF images have now been removed for lack of sources, I've emailed InDOT for a spec of their signs. —Rob (talk) 15:09, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
I have created a few svg images for Indiana, any feedback is appreciated. --Holderca1 21:58, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Pre-1926 "Main Market Highways"
Info from [6] and [7] - first five roads were designated June 1, 1917:
The enactment of a law creating a state highway commission, providing for the construction, reconstruction, maintenance, repair and control of public highways, and providing for co-operation with the Federal Government in the construction of rural post roads was passed by the General Assembly at the Seventieth Regular Session, 1917; approved by the Governor March 7, 1917, and became effective by the Governor's proclamation June 1, 1917....
One of the first duties prescribed by the statute is the "The Commission shall determine what roads shall be designated as MAIN MARKET HIGHWAYS".....

[edit] Wikipedia:State route naming conventions poll/Part2
This state's highway naming convention is up for debate above. Feel free to participate. --Rschen7754 (talk - contribs) 05:44, 4 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Indiana's unique county road numbering system
Their being numbered according to a "meridian" baseline should be mentioned (similar to latitude and longitude). Is there a link or page devoted to this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.86.234.31 (talk • contribs)
- This article is for the state roads of Indiana, not the county roads. --Holderca1 18:38, 15 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Alternate signage in 70s
I seem to remember (and it is bugging the daylights out of me) in the mid-to-late 70s that the state of Indiana experimented with some signs that were the same size and shape as the present signs, but had a dark blue field and yellow numbers/text, not unlike the state flag. I also seem to remember with the signs, beneath the number was the phrase "Fasten Seat Belts". If memory serves, I seem to recall one on IN 2 near US 30 in Valpo, and on IN 43 near Lafayette. Am I nuts, or did they actually do that? --Mhking 00:29, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Redlinks need renaming
It would be very helpful if someone could rename all the redlinks to [[Indiana State Road X]] per WP:USSH so they get created in the right place. Seattlenow 04:25, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
- This has been done. Omnedon 00:16, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] State Road 39
There are redlinks for State Road 39 (south) and State Road 39 (north). However, the main article already describes both routes. There are many examples of other Indiana State Roads with multiple sections described in a single article (such SR 43 and SR 48) so I'm not sure why SR 39 would require separate articles for each section. Omnedon 00:14, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
- The two State Road 39s are completely different routes, just like State Road 4 and 8. That means that the two routes will have different route descriptions, different history, etc. However, if a route was continuous before it was split (State Road 3), then only one article is needed. In this case, SR 39 follows the principles of SR 4 and 8: making separate articles and then turning the main SR 39 article into a dab. —O (说 • 喝) 00:28, 04 October 2007 (GMT)
- Thanks for the clarification. I had not realized that SR 39 was always in two sections rather than being split. Omnedon 01:41, 4 October 2007 (UTC)
