[edit] POV in descriptions

I think calling the Geonosians "savage" and "bloodthirty" isn't NPOV.

I think keeping NPOV in fictional universes isn't always necessary, because protagonists and antagonists apropri cannot be judged equally. - Sikon 05:05, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Moved much from Minor races in Star Wars

The minor article is redundant now as this article covers everything that is in that one. However, in order to reduce the size of this article, some races can be moved to their own articles (ones not as popular, yet with enough information, that they can get an article). Riffsyphon1024 03:53, 29 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I have submitted the Minor races in Star Wars article to Vfd. It serves no purpose now that everything is in this article. --Riffsyphon1024 09:03, 29 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Minor races in Star Wars now redirects to this article. --Riffsyphon1024 06:26, 30 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Template and articles?

Wouldn't we be better suited to develop an infobox template for races and then allow users to develop full articles for them? I'm sure that there are fans of the Sullustans or Ssi-Ruu who would gladly fill out articles. Thoughts? --SparqMan 20:06, 29 Jan 2005 (UTC)

This could possibly reduce the size of the List. How exactly would this work? --Riffsyphon1024 20:12, 29 Jan 2005 (UTC)
I could throw together an info box (see [[World_Eaters] for an example), dumb the current info from this list into the article and label it as a stub. The infobox could include homeworld, average size, distinctive appearance details, sample image of one, etc. Also, all of these difference aliens are appropriately called species, not races. --SparqMan 21:24, 29 Jan 2005 (UTC)
I've thrown together a template. Some input would be nice. This way we can put an info box for each species, and then have it link to an article. No need for any extra text beyond the info box, as long as each links to an article. Take a look at the infobox template: [[Template:Infobox_StarWarsSpecies Star Wars Species infobox template]. --SparqMan 23:49, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)
So this says that races are within species, and this should correct many labelization mistakes? Other than that, I think it looks great, however there's awful lot of species and then the page might seem crowded. --Riffsyphon1024 23:52, 31 Jan 2005 (UTC)
How about a navigational template that includes all the races (species) with an article. --Riffsyphon1024 00:00, 1 Feb 2005 (UTC)
I agree -- this could get crowded. Perhaps we make this page just a list of species, and generate a page for each species with at least the info box and reference for the mention of the species? Certainly someone is likely to fill out info on a Gand page if we've created it for them. What do you mean by a navigational template? Can you link to an example?
It means exactly what it sounds like. One template with every race on it. There's a bunch at Wikipedia:Navigational templates. Other Star Wars templates are towards the bottom, including the one you just made. --Riffsyphon1024 00:29, 1 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Should Selkath have credits given for information?

Looking at the most recent update, it seems that within the section for the race of Selkath, someone has put at the bottom of that section "Information of the events after KotOr provided by Wizards of the Coast, with articles written by Cory Herndon. All other information came from the video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic." Is this even necessary? -- Riffsyphon1024 21:37, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Well, the guidelines for editting do tell us to quote our sources, neh? -Fuzzy 18:25, 6 May 2005 (UTC)
I've moved it down to the bottom of the article, as I mess with the whole piece I'll add links to the various sources. --Saberwyn 10:57, 15 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Are there enough non-sentient creatures in Star Wars...

...That a separate article can be made to hold them? The Rancor could go here, as well as Space Slugs and Mynocks. There are a bunch of others that could be added (i.e. Rontos). --Riffsyphon1024 19:18, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I am creating a Creatures of Star Wars article to place these and others into. --Riffsyphon1024 05:09, 21 Feb 2005 (UTC)
I'm starting to move the non-sentients there now. --Saberwyn 03:43, 16 July 2005 (UTC) FINISHED

[edit] List

Hmm... strictly speaking this isn't just a list because there are paragraphs on a fair few of the entries. Can this be moved to Races of Star Wars in keeping with the naming convention established with Planets of Star Wars and Creatures of Star Wars etc...? --Lochaber 11:34, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Or alternatively due to the size of this article (59K), turn this into a plain list, recreate Minor Races of Star Wars to have paragraphs there and have links from this list to either Minor Races of Star Wars or to the main article for those that have them. -- Lochaber 11:44, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Or we could give every planet and race its own article at Wookieepedia, which would be much easier. I've already copied these lists there, and broken the Planet List in half. --Riffsyphon1024 17:54, Mar 18, 2005 (UTC)
Well... that's fine on Wookieepedia, the question is what to do here? --Lochaber 10:29, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Well yes a "Races and Species of Star Wars" would sound better. However at this point all these "lists" are not worth keeping here as they are. When I made the Systems of Star Wars, Sectors of Star Wars, Creatures of Star Wars, and Cities of Star Wars, I gave each a similar name. The races list was formerly named Minor races in Star Wars which didn't go well for me because then we had two lists and I felt they needed merging, and so I renamed it a List of Star Wars races. Refer to past entries on this page for more information.
I also was not one for separating the Planets List, and neither of these were lists because they described all those things that could not hold an article on their own, while the ones that could had links to those respective articles. Now I look at the Planets article and see 235 planets, some now that we have no information on. I have tryed to give most of them info but I am not the foremost expert on these things. Which is why when I heard that we had gotten a Star Wars Wiki, I immediately called for the copy of all existing articles to the new Wiki, and the dissolution of the various lists, into individual entries.
It would be alot of work to disassemble this list and link to all the newly created individual articles for both races and species --AND-- planets. Then to fix all the links, instead of going to "List of Star Wars races#Some Race" or "Planets of Star Wars#Some Planet", but to their an actual individual article at Wookieepedia. On Wikipedia, only major races and planets as featured in the films would get full individual articles. Everything else that someone might try to delete goes and redirects to Wookieepedia.
Why am I blabbering on like this? *sigh* You were right with the actual list and links. --Riffsyphon1024 17:33, Mar 21, 2005 (UTC)
I suggest to start with, we look at the races that have their own articles (ie Wookies, Ewoks, etc) integrate all the information from here into the race's main article, and leave only the link to the main article here.
That, I believe would cut out some redundant space. After that, we can look at the races who have several paragraphs in this article, or would be fairly easy to fluff out with a few minutes research (ie Bothans, Devaronians, Ithorians, Mon Calamari, etc) and have a go at creating actual articles on Wikipedia. After creating these articles, we do the same as we did with the 'established' races.
If anyone else reckons this is a workable idea, give me a yell and I'll start having a go this weekend. --Saberwyn 23:38, 14 July 2005 (UTC)
I've cut down on the info for races with their own entry to three lines max. If someone feels like coming up with a list of new races deserving their own article, I'll make a start on those. I've also moved as many non-sentients as I can find to Creatures of Star Wars. --Saberwyn 03:42, 16 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Individual pages for Races

I'm thinking of moving some of the larger race articles in this list onto individual pages, using the Chiss article as a template for the information, and doublechecking what I can against the Star Wars Databank and what novels I own. The races I believe can support an individual article (or could do so with a little additional research) are:

  • Bothan
  • Chazrach
  • Evocii
  • Gamorrean
  • Gand
  • Ithorian
  • Mon Calamari (Would include Quarren on this page)
  • Nemoidian (one of the first I plan to do, due to the relative abundance of information here)
  • Selkath
  • Ssi-ruuk
  • Ughnaught

I'll leave it for a week or two, so feel free to comment here on the worth of this idea, what races should be added to the list, and what races should be removed from it. --Saberwyn 03:03, 17 July 2005 (UTC)

Hi there, I have no problem with any races being given individual pages however since these kind of articles often end up on WP:VFD, though WP:FICT has helped a lot in keeping them off, I just suggest to expand the section as much as possible here before moving it out to its own article just because if you move them out before expansion someone might slap a VFD tag on it before you've had a chance to finish... --Lochaber 10:16, 18 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Minor links

A lot of the minor char links (like boss nass and captain tarpals) don't link to the stub list and i don't see them on the newly expanded stub list either. --Ensiform 15:29, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Are we missing a few?

One that comes to mind right now, if the list is covering some of the fictional ones as it seems to be, is (pardon my spelling) Ruurians (maybe I'm missing a syllable) of which Skynxx (again, pardon the spelling, I don't have primary source material at hand) was one. The primary source for this one would be the third Han Solo book by Brian Dailey (where Han goes looking for the treasure of Xim the Despot).

If I recall there was also another character in there, Spray, who was a Skip-Tracer (when he wasn't a senior Corporate Sector type), whose race probably also has not been included.

I'll dig out the primary sources and add them, unless such additions are undesirable.

Missing the Firrerreon. Hethrir is one. His wife, Rilao and son Tigris are also. PrometheusX303 14:31, 11 December 2005 (UTC)
Skynx was also in the Jedi Search trilogy. I think he died in it. --Maru (talk) Contribs 18:07, 11 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Echani and Mandalorians

Are these races? I thought they were kind of orders or communities. --Sikon 05:05, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

  • They weren't actually races, no. -LtNOWIS 03:43, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Note to anyone intending on splitting off a section

This page has been processed by N-Bot, which, for browsing convenience, changes links to redirects to lists to links to the relevant list sections: e.g. [[Geonosian]] is changed to [[List of Star Wars races#Geonosian|Geonosian]].

As a result, anyone who intends to split a section out of this page should be aware that, as of 6 August 2005, the following sections were linked to from the following pages:

~~N-Bot (t/c) 20:46, 6 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Zeltrons

The article says the Zeltrons only appear in some game. Weren't they originally from the comic series? Isn't this the reddish-purple colored people, or am I confused?

[edit] Merges

I merged about 50-60 percent of the remaining races that were under, say, 400-500 words. I recommend that we split this page like the planets page, although that would take a large amount of wikilink changes. Deckiller 03:06, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Size issue

Since I'm the mergist, it might be best for me to clean up the mess. Perhaps a possibility is to split the page into two factions:

  • Major races of Star Wars
  • Minor races of Star Wars

Any species with, say, 200 or less words can go in the minor category, and vice versa. Deckiller 03:15, 22 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Xexto or Troiken?

In this article, the Xexto are named as a species, from the planet Troiken. However, within the Yarael Poof article, the Troiken from the planet Xexto are named as related to the Quermian. Additionally, in a section of this article itself, under Quermian, the same is stated. However, under [1] and in the article Podracing, Troiken is named as the homeworld of the character Gasgano and Xexto as his species. Which is which, and can the incorrect references be corrected? --Anon

The Xexto are the species, and Troiken is the planet. I've fixed the incorrect info on the respective pages. -- wacko2 06:31, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Vandalism

There was an attack at 8:43 eastern time done to the Zabrak info. I fixed it.--HK-47

[edit] Jawa weapons

When I checked the Jawa's gun-like weapon on Star Wars:Battlefront II, It said Jawas use Ionization Rifles or something along those lines. I don't know where the DN Boltcaster came from. Tell me if I'm wrong. User:Desktop Cleanup Wizard

Scratch Ionization Rifle, it's Ionization Blaster, just checked. User:Desktop Cleanup Wizard

[edit] B'ommar monks

The monks should probably get merged over into the organizations list. --maru (talk) contribs 03:52, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] An unsolved question

Why doesn't anyone talk about the species that Master Yoda belongs to, or about its original planetary system? Is he the last of an extinct species? If not, where are his congeners, his relatives? How many are they? What are they doing? Do they share his powers, or his talents? How many sexes do they have, what is their biology? -etc.

In this article, Yoda is completely missing, as if everybody had long accepted Yoda as a human being. In the article about Yoda, it is stated that "George Lucas has intentionally kept the name of Yoda's race a secret." Is that a final word? Hardly acceptable, from a scientific POV.

By the way, as I see it, the name of this article is wrong. It should read: "LIST OF STAR WARS SPECIES", not "RACES".

AVM 18:32, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Call for references

An awful lot of the entries on this list don't mention a single source for where these species are mentioned, or in some cases where their various special abilities and characteristics are described. I'm going to try citing a few myself, but my knowledge of this field is extremely limited so I'll welcome help from all comers on this little project. At a minimum let's try to get at least one reference for each species, just to make their existence verifiable as a start. Bryan 21:52, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

  • I'll start adding references to the Ultimate Alien Anthology, but it's an RPG sourcebook, so if there's a better source of canon then by all means. -- Raveled
Thanks. I don't think canonicity will be an issue since Wikipedia isn't bound by the same sorts of "rules" that Star Wars publications might be - if a source is popular but non-canon it still warrants a mention here, IMO. As long as everything's cited there should be no complaints. Bryan 22:57, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

Oh, I figured I should mention that I set up the article to use the cite.php footnoting system. In case anyone's unfamiliar with it there's a description at Wikipedia:Footnotes. Basically, just put a citation inside ref tags like so:<ref>Star Wars: A New Hope</ref> and a footnote is automatically generated down at the bottom of the article. I find it really easy to use and hopefully everyone else will too. Bryan 23:04, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] "Deathsticks"?

The Balosar Elan Sleazebaggano appears in Episode II 'Attack of the Clones'. He approaches Obi-Wan, and asks Obi if he would like to buy some deathsticks.

Not that it's relevant to this particular article, but what the heck are "deathsticks," anyway? Some sort of drug, presumably? If anyone knows, it's worth a short article. I came to Wikipedia looking for the answer, and others might.
Deathsticks are covered in the List of Star Wars substances. — Deckiller 03:02, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Splitting up this article

As is mentioned on the page itself, this page is enormous. My first thought is to break it up alphabetically, ala the planet list at List of Star Wars planets. Since this is a rather major change, though, I figured I should announce my intentions here and see what objections and suggestions might arise. Bryan 05:47, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

Coming up on a week now since I posed the idea, last chance to stop me. :) Bryan 23:39, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

  • Ideally, thsi information can be made into a general encyclopedic article (or two), or distributed to relevent articles, but I don't see that happening anytime soon. — Deckiller 02:17, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
A couple of subarticles have been split off for the more major races, is that what you mean by "relevant articles"? If so, I doubt the vast majority of the races listed here will ever have enough information to warrant a standalone article (at least not by current Wikipedia general practices). Bryan 23:20, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
That's completely the opposite of what I was mentioning. Race information could belong in plot summaries of books, etc; or in planet sections, that sort of thing — or explained in a general "Races of Star Wars" article. It's difficult to organize such information, so we may have to keep the list. (Nothing on this list warrants an article, and over half the current race articles in the category need to be merged). — Deckiller 01:53, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
Ah. That actually sounds like a bad idea, IMO, since it would make it a lot harder to find information if it were scattered around in lots of articles without an obvious relationship. If I was in a discussion with someone and Boojumoids (or whatever) were mentioned, I'd want to look up information about Boojumoids themselves and wouldn't necessarily have any idea what books or planets they're associated with. I think the current organization is quite reasonable, it divides information up by what sort of information it is rather than what the source of the information is. Bryan 03:49, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
Fair enough; we're going to have to settle for list format for this particular star wars subject. However, we might find difficulty maintaining cruft, but then again, I haven't exactly initated my campaign yet, so that's just blind, pointless extrapolation on my part. — Deckiller 03:51, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
Proper citing of sources should take care of that sort of problem too. My "citation needed" spree has already resulted in a few new references being added, over time the situation will hopefully improve. Bryan 04:28, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
BTW, couldn't redirects provide a solution to your arguement? — Deckiller 03:55, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
Not if the information is integrated into plot summaries and such. One would have to read the article about the book in detail to glean tidbits of information about the race, and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of details would be thrown out in the integration process since they wouldn't be plot-related. I really don't see what the problem with having a separate article or section for specific races, it makes it so much more convenient to find information about them. Bryan 04:25, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
True, and it's not exactly something that can be turned into encyclopedic articles like Technology of Star Wars and various subarticles (one of my future projects, I'm sure you've heard me mention it). However, other anti-cruft people may grow quite upset and deletionist. — Deckiller 05:09, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] SWG Playable species

I have added to Twi'lek, Rodian, Human, Zabrak, Ithorian, Wookie, Mon Calamari and Bothan that they are the playable species in Star Wars: Galaxies. I am not a proper member of the Star Wars wiki project yet but I will be soon because it wont let me add my name to the member list and it keeps saying my ip is blocked when i try to add it.

[edit] Collaboration of the Month

I've been through the "what links here page" and disambiguated most of the links, setting them directly to one of the five subpages. I've pretty much done all of them, I think, except for talk pages and user pages... and user talk pages. Since that's about all that can be done on this page to improve it, and since the page seems to have been the Collaboration of the Month now for almost two months, it's probably time to pick a new article to improve. -- Supermorff 19:48, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Species, not races

  • These articles should be named List of Star Wars species, not races. Races are different types of the same species, and that's hardly what the list is about. Funkynusayri (talk) 05:26, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
