[edit] Naming, redundancy and NPOV

The name of this article is less than well chosen: as there are monarchies titled otherwise than "kingdom", royal is not a good rubricization. And it would not be clever to limit this to just kingdoms. Shilkanni 00:35, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

Another point is that possibly this page is redundant, and even in violation of WP policy aganst forks: we already have an older article to list pretenders, and existing monarchies are listed too at least in categorization. Possibly this page should be merged. Shilkanni 00:35, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

A third point is the NPOV requirement: we cannot keep public a list where there are "Louis XX" and "Leka I" an such, as if we back their claims, amd not just list them as claimants. This page needs to change pretenders to their "most common names", which soon will lead to this page having two categories: reigning ones vs pretenders, and then comes the redundancy aspect, as pretender list alrady exists. Shilkanni 00:35, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

It is funny how you included the Coat of Arm of Malta as being the coat of arm of the Queen. If anything, the arms should have been those of the Queen of Malta or of Windsor. Can some one reply? Maltesedog 07:08, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Also, Hawai'i is not included in this article, although it is a legitimate monarchy (House of Kawananakoa and rivals), even though illegitimate and unrecognised micronations are included.

Many Pacific micronations, like Australia, are omitted Waiiti 03:48, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] King Francis II of England?

Whichever genius wrote this article didn't seem to realize that England is ruled by HM Elizabeth II. I mean, come on. Francis II? How did no-one notice this? Anyway I've corrected this ridiculous mistake.

[edit] Mixing in "non-regnant" information is confusing

Someone from India posted a complaint recently in Wikipedia:Reference desk/Humanities about this page, and I think they have a point. (The RD/H thread is currently here and, if I've worked it out correctly, in a few days will be archived here.) The problem is that the tables in this article are full of rows like this one:

Country Royal House Monarch (or Pretender) Notes
India Image:Imperial-India-Blue-Ensign.svg Windsor Queen Elizabeth II (Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom) non-regnant since 1947

Apparently the idea is that if India had not rejected the British monarchy on independence, then its royal house would be the House of Windsor. First, even as an assumption this is strained: India might just as well have chosen to establish its own monarchy on independence, the way Norway did, instead of becoming a republic. Second, the word "pretender" implies that Queen Elizabeth or someone on her behalf is seriously asserting a claim to the throne of India; they aren't. Third, if India is listed as a country where the British royal family "would be reigning if...", then why not also the U.S.?

And fourth and most important, mixing bizarrely conditional information like this with information about genuine national royal houses is confusing: the poster on the Reference Desk found it insulting to India, and I can see why. Any information about anything but actual regnant royal houses needs to be moved into a separate major section, or better yet, a separate article. And even there, some attention needs to be paid to the actual status applicable to different places.

  • I agree, and I've removed most of those references. --Metropolitan90 08:25, 23 April 2007 (UTC)
  • Along the same lines, what about the "micronational" royal houses? Redonda and L'Anse Saint-Jean? If those are included, what about other monarchist micronations considered notable enough for inclusion on Wikipedia, like Sealand, Hutt River Principality, Talossa, etc? [edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Pahlavi coat of arms.jpg

Image:Pahlavi coat of arms.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 05:06, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

The arms of the House of Solomon (Imperial Family of Ethiopia) have been removed previously, as have other arms such as the Lion and the Rising Sun of the Qajars of Iran. If we are to be consistent that either those arms previously removed must be restored, or the arms of the Pahlavi's and all other non-regnant royal families should be removed.

[edit] Redundancy to be removed

There is quite some history on this page complaining about the fact that this page mixes, in a quite confusing way, pretenders with existing monarchs. This could also be construed to be monarchist POV-pushing. To top it off, the information is completely redundant. Therefore I will, unless some convincing argument is made, proceed to remove all pretenders from this list which will then serve a purpose again: That of having an overview about existing monarchies throughout the world. It has also the added benefit of sparing this list further edit-wars about the legitimacy of various pretenders. --Ministry of Truth 16:09, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

I share many of the concerns of other editors about the way non-reigning claimants/pretenders are referred to on this page. However, this page is NOT a list of "existing monarchies"; it is a list of "royal houses". We already have an article which lists existing monarchies. The course of action suggested by Ministry of Truth would change the nature of this page entirely. Noel S McFerran 23:33, 20 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Chakrilogo.png

The image Image:Chakrilogo.png is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.
