"a pair of bonbori as weapons, hollow metal spheres on the ends of wooden handles"

Just curious, but what's the source for the word "bonbori"? The only definition I can find anywhere is "paper lantern", and Googling for (e.g.) "bonbori AND weapon" exclusively returns pages related to Ranma. Is it mentioned in the manga? A corruption of another word? -- Sam

Hi Sam, it's oddly close to Don-Buri or Donburi which loosely translates as "things" and is a common name attached to many Japanese foods. Concidering the large amount of puns and food related themes in Ranma1/2, it's highly possible it's an inside joke on the creator's part. And yeah, I turned up nothing on my search too, including derivatives and ancient weapon history sites. There's an amazingly long list of weapons recorded but nothing even close to what Shampoo uses. I suspect it's made up from scratch or based off something non-martial arts related.

-> First, "bonbori" is kind of moot as a word in some ways, as they just call it "chui" in Chinese (錘 I think?). Plus, they are not hollow - they are very heavy, and in history were used by bruisers who could lift such weapons, one in each hand. Movies don't feature this weapon very often, probably because it wasn't known for finesse and high skill. (Notice that one fat guy had this weapon in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - of course, the actor seems to have used hollow versions for the movie, since such weapons are really too heavy for most people nowadays.)

I, too, have searched for references to the word, "bonbori" but have not found any as of yet, except that related to Ranma 1/2. It does seem to mean "paper lantern" foremost, and the two do look quite similar in many ways, especially as depicted in the comics. (There is no relationship to the word "donburi" at all.) [edit] Why all this information about fanfics?

I don't think that too much information about fanfics should be here - because they are just that, fanfics. What do other people think? (If noone says anything, some time I might just edit the whole thing.)

Edededed 00:46, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

I would assume it is because that fanfics reflect the fandom's opinion of a character, which is really what is being discussed. I find some of the fanfic parts a bit irrelavent, but it's not technically wrong or misleading, so I'm not currently planning on doing anything to it.

- 69.21.203.150

I think there should be a separate article called "Ranma 1/2 Fandom" or something like that, and move all fanfiction info to that article. - Commander Nemet 10:38, 29 October 2005 (UTC)

I just read the article, and thought that was very interesting the information about fanfics. - Anonymous 23rd November 2005. Good job in the whole article.

I agree with Commander Nemet - fanfic information may be interesting, but it is not particularly relevant - if one REALLY needs to put it in, I think that it should at least be segregated in its own section, to separate the non-canon from the canon. Edededed 08:02, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

Agreed with Commander Nemet and Edededed; Ranma fanfic can have an article of its own, but it is invasive as-is in this article and nearly every other Ranma article. -- tylerwillis 14:53, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Akane Tendo

Hello. I have evidently touched a few nerves with my recent comments on Akane Tendo. I will use this space to justify any edits that I make. Hopefully, we can discuss our dffrences instead of getting into a war.

My edits: "discovered early opn that Ranma had long been correct" --> "discovered early on that Ranma had been correct"

Besides the spelling error fix, why would Ranma have "long been correct" when he had just arrived. Besides, in the Manga that I have, it was Akane that warned Rama that Kuno is a lot better when he fights against men.

"Given the fact that Shampoo was the first of the other two girls with legitimate claims to Ranma (regardless of where they happen to be from), r" --> "R"

Technically, the Tendo-Saotome deal was on LONG before the visit to the Amazon village. In fact, unless Genma picked up more fiances between the Amazon Village and Tendo Dojo, Shampoo would be the LAST fiance. Even if we don't count Akane as a fiance until she was actually picked, Shampoo would still be the second to last (after Ukyo and whoever else Genma engaged Ranma to in the Anime.)

" Two very interesting fanfictions which promote the couple yet heavily involve Akane are the fanfictions 'Power' and 'Dream of the Earthbound'. Another story, which is self contained and presents a truly unusual take on Akane loosing Ranma to Shampoo is the fanfic 'A Cold Wind Blows', which is written by Aondehafka, who also is in the process of writing 'Dream of the Earthbound'."

We have neither the time, or the space, or the inclination, to list every Ranma/Shampoo fic that has Akane in it. Besides, to be fair, we would also have to list the Ranma/Ukyo, Ranma/Nabiki, Ranma/Kasumi, Ranma/Kodachi, Ranma/Ryouga, Ranma/Pantyhose Taro etc. etc. and that would take WAY too long.

"Occasionally, Akane will feature prominantly into fanfictions in which Ranma chooses or in some way winds up with Ukyo. In more unusual fanfictions, Akane is sometimes right in the middle of, or even the CAUSE of, Ranma choosing one of her sisters to marry instead of her." --> Deleted

You can find fanfic of EVERY single variety out there. Listing all the types (including the "Occasional" or "Unusual") would take up a ton of space. Is there any specific reason that these types are mensioned?

"summation was given by Hung Nguyen on why he dislikes Akane, (and which can be found at http://aamark4.tripod.com/ramble1.htm)" --> "[[1]] was given by Hung Nguyen on why he dislikes Akane"

Tightning up the article.

", but from certain viewpoints, usually among those who dislike Akane, the logic isn't all that off-base" --> Deleted

What is the point of this sentence? ANY reasoning from "certain viewpoints" won't look "that off-base" Creationism, Nazism, Communism, and N'sync is Awesomeism wouldn't look "that off base" from a "certain viewpoint."

Plus, the article contains many factual inaccuracies. Example: "Does she ever learn to cook anything edible? Nope. She continues to ignore the recipe and thinks that it will all come to her, despite the fact that the recipe is there for a reason." That is a verifiable false statement (see Shinnosuke arc) and hard to forget, since Akane cooking a decent curry was one of the major plot poitns for a Major Story Arc. Also, he cites all of THREE examples in a 38 volume Manga, and only uses those examples for certain section of his argument. In short, I seen no reason that Mr. Nguyen's article should be considered a reliable source on anything, implied or otherwise.

"Nguyen is a writer of popular Ranma fanfiction which usually is either a crossover in nature, or else is set purely within the 'Ranmaverse' itself, but which does not perform pairings of Akane and Ranma. Many of these fics set in the 'ranmaverse' do include 'guest shots' by characters from other series, but do not count in his eyes as true crossovers." --> "Nguyen is a writer of popular Ranma fanfiction which does not perform pairings of Akane and Ranma."

Is the fact that he writes crossovers relavent at all?

"regardless of whether one is for or against Akane in fanfiction, " --> Deleted

Tighting up the article.

", rather than supports her, which puts him in the vast minority even among those who implicitly state in their fanfiction that they do not want to see Ranma or Akane together" --> Deleted

Redundant. We already know he's "one of the few people" so no need to mension it again.

If you have any objections, do not hesitate to raise them.

Sincerely,

69.21.203.150

[edit] Articles

You know, this article should be divided into separate articles. If they're all in here, they can't have much except for history and abilities. This should be renamed minor characters while the major characters have their own articles. --anon

Well, several of them already have major articles. WhisperToMe 23:59, 1 February 2006 (UTC)

The sections in here on major characters are pointless, as all the info and more (including, for example, pictures we don't have space for here) is obtainable on their main pages. I'm going to take out those that have pages of their own and rename this "Minor Characters." On a related note, it'd be nice if someone made a seperate page for Ukyo Kuonji; her section is many times longer than the other characters' and it seems as though she would warrant a page of her own. I'd do it myself, but I've never even seen Ranma 1/2, so I'm hardly a good choice. Megane 00:01, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

There is no major characters page though. Someone needs to get it up there.

[edit] Hiroshi and Daisuke

I'm pretty sure they know about Ranma's curse after the fight with Mousse.

  • In the manga. In the anime, everyone that isn't a main character (except Tatewaki and Kodachi) has Sunnydale Syndrome up until the cheerleading event. JONJONAUG 19:13, 27 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pantyhose Taro

Why does Rouge show up here as a major title, but not Taro? That seems at best backwards as Taro is definitely more important a character than Rouge. Since they are lumped together on the same page, they should probably both be listed together on this page.

[edit] More characters needed

This article needs further expansion - there are a large number of minor Ranma characters still missing. A list of examples can be furnished if needed. - CNichols 02:22, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

Well, yeah, but first we need to link together the existing characters properly. Currently there is no proper links to the likes of Herb, or Saffron, or Ryu, or numerous others. They have pages but aren't mentioned in any of the character sections. I also don't see the point of deleting the links we did have unless you replace them with something better. Derekloffin 18:28, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] How about some structure

This doesn't seem to have much structure to it, not even simple alphabetical order or anything. Beyond alphabetical, you could go with order of appearance, or subdivide by source (anime/manga), or perhaps some kind of classification system (although I can see that being too subjective). Any thoughts? Derekloffin 20:13, 31 October 2006 (UTC)

Check the order again, characters that have appeared in both the manga and anime are first and then the anime only characters are listed. But you are right, some alphabetical order could be useful as long as it respects the separation of manga characters first and then the anime only ones. You are free to do that if you want. 148.202.98.195 21:16, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

Been trying to think how to go about orginizing things here, and I think alphabeticetical, subdivided into manga/anime, manga only, and anime only would be the best. Another concern I still have is whether characters like Tsubasa who have their own pages but are currenlty poorly linked in should get sections with perhaps just their name and a link to the full page bio. Any better ideas/objections? Derekloffin 23:14, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

I like your idea to separate the characters, but I don't see the need to add links to characters like Tsubasa, what your need to fix that, is some work on the navigation template, I saw a proposal on the talk page of the Ranma template, perhaps that could work? Oh, one other thing, I would put manga characters only first.148.202.98.195 20:36, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Okay, I've gone thru and reformatted it. A few I was unsure if they appeared in both or just one, so a few may be under the wrong category but they should be easy enough to move. I also got rid of those utterly useless trivias that characters are minor (they're on the minor character page for pity sakes, of course they're minor). Derekloffin 23:02, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for adding a new structure to the page Derek, the page looks better now, and don't worry, all the characters are where they should be.Facer 21:13, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
Good to know. You wouldn't happen to know what season/episode Harumaki is in? He didn't ring any bells at all for me when I was putting in the pictures so he got the cold shoulder. Derekloffin 00:15, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
Sorry, I don't know exactly what episode Harumaki appears in, but I believe he shows up in the manga shortly after or before the introduction of Pantyhose Taro, maybe that could help. By the way, the images need to be resized again, and some anon wrote only cruft on the bios of the characters he added, do you have the time to check that out?Facer 20:26, 10 November 2006 (UTC)
I'm knee deep in gaming at the moment, so it's difficult to tear myself away to edit stuff properly. I just completed my Ranma ½ DVD collection though so I'll probably do some editing fairly soon as well as fill out the anime character list as I go through them. Also I have a complete scan of the Manga available too, although I'm not familar with it as I'm more an anime person myself, so I'd prefer a more manga knowledgeable person to do stuff there. However, if you'd like a pic of a character just give me sufficient info to find it in either source and I can make one up. Derekloffin 21:59, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Missing Pictures

If you know the location of a character without a picture, please make a note of it here (volume in the manga, episode/season in the anime). There are also several I have been trying to find good pics for, like Akane and Ranma's friends, yet haven't found a good spot yet to take one. Derekloffin 08:29, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A few dangling characters

If you haven't noticed, I've been steadily going thru the anime and adding characters. I've come across a few I have some issues with though, so some input would be nice:

  • Ranma's fake mother, I couldn't find a name for her other than 'Sakura' which Happosai called her but since the rest of his tale was fiction, so probably was the name.
  • The 4 guys who wanted the dragon whisker. Couldn't get names for them save 'pork bun heads'.
  • Mousse's mother, her character is so small, no talking, no name, I wonder if she should even be added.
  • Ukyo's father, him I think should be added as at least he talks, but for consistency I wonder in this case if his inclusion means Mousse's mother should be included too.
  • The three old ladies from the tea ceremony family, again no names.

Any ideas how to deal with these? (edit oops, forgot my sig)Derekloffin 03:44, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

    • Their names are Niku-man, Pizza-man, Curry-man, and An-man but the groups name is The Niku Men.
    • You could name Ukyo's father Mr. Kuonji and Mousse's mother as "Mousse's Mother", and also in the first episode Shampoo was seen fighting Ranma in the Amazon village, a woman in the back of the audience was seen wearing glasses like Mousse's(although this could have been the animators idea of featuring Mousse early, so it is uncertain).
    • Their names are Ino, Shika and Cho, similar to the characters in Naruto, and also I suggest you should add Satsuki Mikaoji, Sentaro's fiancee, and her monkey Sane, and her grandma the elder Mikaoji.

Thanks. I haven't gotten far enough along to reach Satsuki yet, but I will add those as I get to them. I'll probably go back add a few I missed along the way though first. I just finished season 5 for reference. Derekloffin 03:44, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Mousse's Mother details

While getting the picture for Mousse's mother, I noticed the writing on the letter was shown. Anybody able to confirm a few things for me: Moose no hana 0-00 Joketsu Zokumuru Chaina

First, looks like she can't spell. Second, what is 'no hana'?

What she meant to write was 'no haha' which can be described as mother, so it can be said that she doesnt know squat about japanese writing or language. Xer

[edit] Ranma's Alter Ego's

I was wondering if I could add a list of all of Ranma's disguises and aliases like Yoiko Hibiki, Ranko Tendo, Ryoga's "fiancee", and etc. Xer 21:40, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

  • Me personally, I'd say no. There aren't truly other characters and would be more fitting to Ranma's page if anywhere.Derekloffin 01:25, 29 January 2007 (UTC)

Something which you could add is the evil spirit version of female Ranma (from the anime), and the mirror female Ranma (from the manga). Though the anime version only got one episode, the mirror female Ranma did have a couple chapters to herself. Sera404 05:26, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Yeah, those are fine as they are actually different characters, not just Ranma acting as another person.Derekloffin 06:45, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
  • What about the "alternate" characters from when Genma was lost and the villagers took him in as the fabled "lucky panda"
Those bunch I have been debating about. There are basically just reflections of the Ranma ½ normal cast members and for that reason I don't really judge them as separate characters. However, perhaps they deserve a mention as a group? Derekloffin 23:07, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ling-Ling and Lung-Lung

Is it worth mentioning that these seem to be the only Chinese characters who aren't named after some kind of beauty product? Or at least I can't think of any product by those names. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 58.168.39.199 (talk) 23:07, 22 March 2007 (UTC).

No, as Kirin is Chinese and isn't either (nor are any of the 7 lucky gods). At best it might be true of the Amazons, but with only 3/5 with the beauty product name, that's not really worth mentioning.

Derekloffin 01:30, 23 March 2007 (UTC)

  • Do you know what happened to the pic and the bio of them? Where can I find the pic? --Kid Sonic 19:36, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
They are anime exclusive character, so you have to go to the anime minor character page to see them. Minor characters of the Ranma ½ anime Derekloffin 23:35, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Threshold for the definition of a minor character

In looking through the page as well as the manga, some characters appear in only one or two anime episodes or manga chapters, whereas some appear across several chapters or episodes but are only confined to a single story arc, e.g. Mikado and Azusa, Mint and Lime, and Rouge. Some of their bios may not yet warrant migration to a new page on them, but they could be expanded given that there is more material on them to work with. I'm wondering if keeping them here as minor characters along with other characters who appear even less is warranted or if they should have their own pages individually or by groups. --BrokenSphere 18:12, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

I would say to get a full page to themselves they have to have to either be central to the arc, or reoccur several times in different arcs. However, you also need enough to say about them. Even if a character appears a lot or is important to an arc, if there is next to nothing to say about them, they should remain here regardless of how often they appear. Also, we don't want their bio to simply read like a plot summary (which even some of the chars currently with full pages often seem to do). Personally, I would demote a few of the ones with full pages at the moment, but I'm not going to. If you feel there is enough to warrant a full page of at least say Hikaru Gosunkugi length, then go for it, but even some of the longest here would have a hard time reaching even that length which is near the shortest of the full page bios. Derekloffin 22:55, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Anna/Akari

I noticed on Akari's page (now deleted) someone mentioned that Anna actually came before Akari. I'd like to confirm that before tweaking the trivia for Anna in that regard. Anybody have a source for the release dates of the various manga chapters? Derekloffin 22:03, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

I assume that you mean the anime appearance for Anna vs. the manga appearance for Akari and which one came first; Furinkan.com has the original air dates for the anime episodes as well as the publication dates for the manga volumes. --BrokenSphere 22:30, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Length

This article is FAR too long. There are at least four different sections that could be broken up. Aside from that, since this is a list of minor characters, I hardly think it is appropriate to list every one of them. Imasleepviking 15:26, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Do you mean breaking up along the lines of the groups (anime/manga, anime-only, etc.)?
I think that this should be as comprehensive as possible; however there has to be some distinction made between minor minor characters and not-so minor/major minor characters who show up more often or who play a role in longer story arcs. --BrokenSphere 15:33, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
To the first end, definitely, because that way y'all can encompass the second idea without having to have the hassle of scrolling forever to find any singular minor characterImasleepviking 15:48, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
Well, given the index at the top I don't really see the problem, but I suppose splitting it into manga+manga/anime and anime only+games pages would be appropriate. Dave 16:05, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
I just realized, what will then happen to this minor chara page when all the info gets migrated out? Or maybe it can be reserved for truly minor characters who only appear once in an arc/ep and that's it, while those who have more substantial appearances but aren't regular/recurring characters can get migrated into the proposed anime/manga, etc. pages. --BrokenSphere 16:14, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
But who should decide where that line is drawn? Most characters are 1-time appearances, even important ones like Rouge and Lime/Mint. Like with Bakeneko (who has appeared several times) I'd argue that they're really just included due to not having enough information to write about in full profiles, but opinions differ. It's easier to just split it in two 'Minor manga characters' and 'Minor anime & game only characters' pages.
Btw: What's up with all the 'br' tags? Dave 16:20, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
It's the only way I could see to fix the header issue without {{clear}}Imasleepviking 16:29, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
Header issue? Dave 16:34, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
Probably the easiest way to handle it is to leave the anime/manga guys here, give the anime and manga only their own pages and the movie/game ones together on a page (since they're the smallest sections) and link them here. Another way to shorten things up is to look through and find all the pics that outsize the actual text and temporarily remove them (leave a link on the talk page though so it can be easily restored should some expansion of the text be made), resize them, or downright replace them with smaller ones. However, as the tag says, 100+KB articles should be broken up into separate pages and resizing/replacing pics doesn't really address that. Derekloffin 17:26, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
To me the movies, OAV and TV series are connected and should be placed in conjunction, but the games/extracurricular may warrant yet another separate section. It's also more useful to put all the manga/source material stuff in one page. It would help us in our effort to keep the continuities straight and easily overviewed. Dave 17:48, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

I'm playing around with this right now in my sandbox. I set up one for the manga charas and another for the "anime" ones, although for the latter, I decided to keep the TV series, movies, and OAVs together because technically they are all anime so I didn't see the need to separate them from each other. The video game charas I think could be kept on here. Here's what they look like right now without the TOCs shifted right:

  • Manga charas
  • Anime charas

I plan to eventually delete these, so maybe they can be discussed on my main talk page (not the ones for those 2) as opposed to here. --BrokenSphere 17:53, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

Looks good to me and length is just right on the recommendation too. Derekloffin 17:57, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
I still personally think it's too long, but I don't really know much about the series, so I guess if it really is comprehensive, then that's good.Imasleepviking 18:07, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
I think it looks great, beyond the remaining, somewhat (subjectively) visually detractive 'br' tags. Dave 18:08, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
OK. I'm going to set up the respective anime and manga pages, migrating info from this page onto there as there were some recent edits to the info here. If we need to break those up further, and I can see the reasoning/need for that, we can discuss that on the talk pages for those when they're up and running. --BrokenSphere 18:11, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
Well, I'd prefer if you kept all manga characters in one page, with a section for those overlapping the anime. And all the additional tv/OAV/movie characters in the other page. It's the most easily overviewed format. Foundation and extension so to speak. Dave 18:16, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
The problem there is that too is too long. The anime/manga is also quite significant and combined with either other one would be still qualify as too long. As well, just for neutrality they should be kept separate, especially as some character undergo significant alterations in the anime. Derekloffin 18:26, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
I was thinking of keeping the minors common to the anime/manga on here. A note saying that these charas are common to both the anime and manga could work to that effect. If you look at what I proposed in my experiments, those were just for the charas exclusive to either the anime only or the manga only. BTW, I'm using how the Fullmetal Alchemist minor charas were treated, as basis given that that series has the same issues with minor characters. This is what I set up, nothing has been deleted yet from this article space:
--BrokenSphere 18:30, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
That's fine by me. Only minor thing I might think might help is the same index format used on these new pages as on the current one (next to the text rather than taking up the whole width). Just be sure to link in the new pages here so people can find them. Derekloffin 18:35, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
It sounds ok to me as well, but I'm uncertain how to make sure that people don't mix up different versions of the same character? Dave 18:38, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
I try to always mention the manga version first, then say some like 'in the anime' for the anime differences. Setaro and Satsuki in particular could really use an overhaul though as they got a massive refit for the anime. Most the others it's just an added appearance or two. Derekloffin 18:42, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
This is why the minors common to the anime/manga can stay on here and the ones exclusive to either medium can/were migrated onto those pages. Take a look yet at how this page now looks. --BrokenSphere 18:51, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
I think it looks good and easily overlooked. As long as all the bottom links are switched from 'minor ranma½ characters' to mention all the 3 pages separately instead, I'm ok with it. However, there are a whole lot of character reference links (to Lime etc) that will need to be changed, and I'm not up to the challenge/nuisance. Dave 19:02, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
The refs were migated over and the template updated to reflect the new groupings. I've modified the intro paras for all 3 so they cross-reference each other. I'm somewhat glad now I didn't link overly to charas here for what I wrote up in the other pages but yeah, that will need to be overhauled too. *Phew* --BrokenSphere 19:06, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
Yeah really, this is where a nice intelligent bot would be very handy. Derekloffin 19:13, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
Hmm, I think the end reference would be less confusing and more symmetric with the other references, by regular text for 'Minor Characters', and 'Manga & Anime' as a separate link below. Dave 19:36, 19 April 2007 (UTC)
OK, I changed that so we'll try it out as such. BTW, that's a template, so discussion re. it more properly belongs on its talk page. --BrokenSphere 19:46, 19 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] TOC length

Because the number of minor characters is long and so are all 3 lists (anime-manga, anime-only, manga-only), it is feasible to keep the TOCs as short as possible. To that end, additional sections for characters such as trivia, attacks, etc. do not need to have their own subsections as this will lengthen the TOC unnecessarily. Using the current formatting (bold text for such headings), the TOC length and presentation can be maintained at a reasonable length. Using headers for the subsections also makes more sense if the character has their own article space. --BrokenSphere 21:07, 30 May 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ryoga's Parents

Although it's a safe bet he has them in the anime, I don't believe they were ever mentioned in the anime. I think this entry should be move to manga only (unless I'm incorrect). Derekloffin 18:56, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

That seems reasonable enough. Dave 18:31, 2 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Reduction in the # of fair use images

The character pics were removed from the main article and the DVD covers were pulled from the list of eps page as part of a trend towards minimizing the use of fair use images. While the minor characters haven't been touched yet, they are a potentially prime target since there are/were pics for all the minor characters. In light of this, I suggest the following guideline for which minor characters may not need their own images:

  • They only appear in either only one manga chapter and are never seen again, or likewise in only one anime episode/movie/OAV episode and are never seen again. I realize that this does create some issues for the characters like Farmer Brown and Anna who did make a cameo appearance in the "Tendo Family Christmas Scramble" OAV ep, which can be discussed.
  • The character is a recurring, but quite minor character who may not even be named who has minimal interaction with the main cast. The old washerwoman may be the only case in point.

An example which I have somewhat followed as a model as to how to treat character lists is the Naruto characters. Up until a few months ago, practically every single character had a fair use illustration. After an admin deleted all the images that appeared on a couple character list pages though for perceived abuse of fair use images, they have been very selective as to who merits an image or not, with some minor characters who did appear more than once not having any at all. The problem I find with those rules is you might as well remove every picture because nearly every character doesn't qualify, and the few that do only barely qualify. For anime for example, only 7 appear in more than 1 episode, and 6 of those 7 in only 2 episodes. It also does a very odd favoring as it excludes minor characters who have more impact than the ones that reappear. I don't know about you, but I HATE wall of text articles with a passion. I'm okay with trimming the number of pictures, but under this standard it would reduce too much I think.
Perhaps a better way to go is to take out pictures for the smaller blurb characters. This way, if the character is important enough to warrant a fair bit of text, they get a pic, if they aren't they don't. It better reflects the usefulness of the character rather than just simply scaling them based on appearance number. Of course some re-evaluation of the text may in order (some read far too much like a complete plot summary rather than a character summary).
And in a few cases (like Ling Ling and Lung Lung) the pictures can be shrunk/cropped more as they are unnecessarily large at the moment.Derekloffin 01:43, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
I was expecting that the pics would be severely culled because after all, these are minor characters.
As for culling on the basis of relative importance, this could work. A couple that spring to mind are Ryoga's family except for Shirokuro, the Saotome ancestors, and the horse and boar that are at the shrine. I like the pics myself as well, but this is an issue that I've noticed that for some reason has not hit the Ranma pages yet, so this is a heads up to try and head it off. As for larger res pics, those can be resized and reuploaded, the # more than the size/res is a bigger issue for me at present. BrokenSphereMsg me 01:52, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Improper fair use tag

The # of images has been reduced from 26 to 16 so for now I'm removing the tag. If there are still issues, please raise them here. BrokenSphereMsg me 16:58, 28 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Hiroshi and Daisuke.jpg

Image:Hiroshi and Daisuke.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
