This article is basically a copy and paste from the Maori language Wikipedia. I'd be grateful if someone who knows more about such things than this ignorant pakeha could have a look and check I haven't done anything too stupid. There are far too many red links, for one thing, but whether they all need to have articles written which ones can be subtly de-linked is beyond my knowledge of Maoritanga. I also don't know how to transfer an image in Maori Wikipedia across into English Wikipedia. Grutness|hello? 01:48, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Macrons

I've removed the macrons from the names in the list - I could foresee duplicated articles for many iwi, one with macrons and one without. I've added a note linking to the mi.wikipedia page which shows them all. Grutness|hello? 06:10, 18 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Great to see some of my best work being copied. But I must warn about your comment "please check with the list from Maori Wikipedia (http://mi.wikipedia.org/wiki/R%C4%81rangi_iwi) for macron usage":
For many of my most recent additions to the original list, I have deliberately not added all required macrons, especially when they don't appear in every web version of the tribe's name. The resulting links to unmacronned new pages can then be easily (and usually are almost straight away) converted to the "correct" versions by a simple "move", leaving a redirect to deal with existing and future macronless links created by me or anyone else.
Kia ora! (By the way, something's not quite right with your clever signature; maybe because of duplicating "[[User:Grutness|".) - Robin Patterson 10:16, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Kia ora, Robin! Hope you don't mind me pinching your work and putting an English evrsion here! As to the sig, yes...when MW1.4 came in it showed up a mistake I'd made in forming the signature. It works fine again, but any old comments I made have a weird looking sig... I'm changing them when I notice them...
The macron problem's not the only one I';ve noticed. The use of spaces and Te seems pretty arbitrary at times (e.g., Ati Awa and Te Atiawa). If you can think of a better way to get around the macron situation than what I've put, I'd be very happy to see it on the page! Grutness|hello? 11:03, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Waikato Tainui Corrections

zZParagonZz here, there is no such iwi(tribe) as 'Waikato' only 'Tainui'. Tainui is the canoe and the main iwi to the area 'Waikato' named by the Maori's. From the Tainui iwi, there are sub tribes, these sub tribes are still Tainui but they refer to their 'hapu' (sub tribe) name e.g. Ngati Wairere is a hapu (sub tribe)of Tainui. Since I am not good at editing Wikipedia, it would be appreciated that you can make the alterations for me, thank you. [edit] Standard for spelling/macronisation of names

Used by my superiors and myself in the editing of Māori books for publication, is the list in the back of Angela Ballara's Iwi. Her list conforms to the standards of the Māori Language Commission. The Māori Wikipedia list is not necessarily correct. Kahuroa 00:05, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Other section

I removed this as trivia not in keeping with the rest of the article, tho I have retained the link to the Te Ara page about Maori in Australia. Why do I think its trivia? Because there are heaps of such joke iwi names and they would overwhelm this article if we allow them a foot in the door. Better to keep the article in focus as a list of actual iwi names. If there is a cogent need for an article about the sociodynamics of humorous iwi names, then better there. Kahuroa (talk) 22:34, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Duplication

I suppose the two listings on the List page for Ngai Tai & Ngāi Tai areplications Hugo999 (talk) 12:09, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
