Talk:List of Lighthouses in Norway

[edit] Coordinates - need checking
I tried to locate the coordinates for the lighthouses using gulesider.no, as this utility a) allowed me to reliably search on the lighthouse names, and b) returned URLs with the coordinate values. In some cases this seems to have worked great; in others the coordinates were off by quite a bit. If anyone has a better way to do it, or wants to correcting these piece by piece, that would be great. --Leifern (talk) 23:26, 9 December 2007 (UTC)
I have now found a method for fairly accurately finding the coordinates: In one browser window I keep the article open for editing. In the second window I look up the lighthouse on gulesider.no under "kart" (maps). In the third window I click through from the article to Wikimapia. Based on the gulesider map (which often shows the actual structures) I center the Wikimapia image to the exact location of the lighthouse, as best I can. The coordinates then appear in the URL for Wikimapia, and I copy these to the article. I usually also mark the location in Wikimapia for posterity. This seems to be accurate within a few hundred feet at worst. Might not be good enough for navigating by sailboat, but close enough to find the landmarks. --Leifern (talk) 18:56, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Naming convention
In the wikilinks, I have consistently given the lighthouses their geographical names + "fyrstasjon." Where I have found articles about specific lighthouses, I have redirected the "fyrstasjon" links to the current names of the articles. The "fyrstasjon" convention is to avoid ambiguity with respect to the island the lighthouse is on, the municipality it's in, etc. --Leifern (talk) 23:28, 9 December 2007 (UTC)
- No English translation of "fyrstasjon"? Why not? Punkmorten (talk) 16:20, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
