[edit] Organized by film?

Should this page be organized by film? The problem right now is that a lot of information has been copied over from the individual Bond movie articles. If an error is found there it means theres a good chance theres an error here too. My current feelings are that under the "Vehicles and gadget" sections of the individual movies there should be a link to the List of James Bond vehicles instead. (This goes for List of James Bond gadgets as well, which is organized by film). Another alternative is just to list the vehicle without description here and allow the individual pages to describe the vehicle K1Bond007 03:05, Dec 5, 2004 (UTC)

I concur. This should be listed by film. There will be a little repetition, but not that much. 23skidoo 23:53, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Die Another Day

What's the car model Bond drives in Cuba in Die Another Day? Even though it isn't official MI6 issue, it's still a Bond car, and a rather cool one at that. (Actually, since the MI6 sleeper agent lends it to Bond, I think it can be legitimately described as an agency vehicle, come to think of it.) 23skidoo 23:53, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Ford Fairlane - owned by Raoul. K1Bond007 03:18, Jan 11, 2005 (UTC)
Duly added. Many thanks! 23skidoo 03:39, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Are all vehicles to be listed

Someone just added the make of vehicle for the police cars chasing Bond's bus in Live and Let Die. And I noticed the car Jaws drives in Spy Who Loved Me is also listed. Before I delete anything, is the intent to list every vehicle in the movies, or are we just sticking to the vehicles physically handled by James Bond? If we're expanding beyond, there are a number of other applicable vehicles that could be added such as Goldfinger's Rolls Royce, the car Aki drives in You Only Live Twice, Jinx's car in Die Another Day, etc. 23skidoo 01:10, 2 Mar 2005 (UTC)

When I created the article the intent was for only "James Bond vehicles" meaning driven by Bond, vehicles marketed as a Bond vehicle (ex:Zao's Jag and Jinx Thunderbird), or notable vehicles such as Goldfinger's Rolls - something along those lines. Adding other vehicles like the police cars is way too much information that most people that read this article won't even care about. What really needs to happen is for this list to be broken up into films instead of make. It'd be one thing if he drove only Aston Martins, BMWs and Bentleys, but that's not so and after 20+ films it makes this list rather hard to read. K1Bond007 02:51, Mar 2, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Aston Martin DB3

While I completely believe that Fleming called it a DB3, there actually was no such car. There were three series of Aston Martin DB2: The original, the Aston Martin DB2/4, which might be called the DB2 Mark II but wasn't, and the Aston Martin DB Mark III, which could have been called the DB3 but wasn't. The next car was the Aston Martin DB4. According to AstonMartins.com, an excellent reference, it was really a DB Mark III whether Fleming called it that or not. But no matter, we should leave it as "DB3" here because that's what the man wanted, and redirect it to DB Mark III since that's the real car. --SFoskett 12:18, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)

I must correct myself. There was an Aston Martin DB3. It was a racing car (see here) and as such is unlikely to have been driven around Switzerland by Mr. Bond. I stand by my contention that, while Fleming said it was a DB3, he meant a DB Mark III. --SFoskett 13:24, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
If this can be confirmed as an error on Fleming's part (as opposed to, say, vernacular of the time), maybe this can be acknowledged in a footnote and/or a trivia item in the applicable book article. 23skidoo 13:38, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
But that is what was stated. We can't assume he was refering to the DB Mark III. Perhaps he assumed that there would have been a real DB3 like there was a 4 and 5. I'll look into this more to see if this is a confirmed mistake by Fleming. I'm sure someone knows one way or the other. K1Bond007 17:35, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
There are a few references on the web to this "mistake". here's one, for example. Can someone look in the book itself and see if Fleming calls it a "DB3" or "DBIII"? The latter lends credence to the idea that it was a DB Mark III. Other clues are the number of seats (no DB3 or DB3S would have had four) and the date of writing (the DB Mark III came out in 1957, the DB3 in 1951 and was passe by 1956). --SFoskett 18:20, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
Here's a pretty definitive answer: The book, Hollywood TV and Movie Cars specifically states that the car was a DB Mark III. Search google for "book db mkiii golfdinger" and you'll be able to read the page. --SFoskett 18:37, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
I don't really see how that is definitive; however, I have seen a few websites that claim it was a DB Mark III so I will concede for the time being. K1Bond007 20:33, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
I think your edit is a nice way of wording it. The Goldfinger book says "DB3" then? I agree that some fan site or book isn't definitive - wrong word on my part. Only Mr. Fleming could describe it definitively. However, what about those other items - Is the car ever described as having a back seat? And what year was he writing the book? --SFoskett 21:40, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)
The book was published in '59 so it was probably written in either 57 or 58. Most fansites of the novels would tell you the book occurred between May and June 1957. Since it's been a while since I've read it and I don't own the book I can't confirm this. I don't recall the car having a backseat or it being mentioned. I do recall it being mentioned as the "DB3" not "DB III". I'm sure Fleming talks about the engine in the car too, but I wouldn't use this to determine which is which since Fleming almost always claims the engine was reworked to add this or that (such as the superchargers for all Bond's Bentleys). K1Bond007 22:06, Jun 24, 2005 (UTC)

I checked the book - it's "DB III". It's even in a chapter title. Anyway, such clues as there are:

  • It's called "DB III". This could lean either way, but I think it is more likely that Fleming would have written "DB3" if he meant the racer.
  • It's offered to Bond along with a "Jaguar 3.4"[1]. That was a fashionable, quick, saloon introduced in 1957, as was the DB Mark III. If he wanted to place Commander Bond in a racer, he would have instead selected a Jaguar D-Type[2] to which the DB3 racer was an archrival.
  • There is no mention of a back seat (that I saw) but it does specify that Jill locks her bag "in the back" next to Bond's suitcase - this means it has a locking boot. Sounds more like a saloon than a racer.
  • It also doesn't specify that it's a coupe, though there is not the merest indication that it lacks a roof, as do nearly all DB3 and DB3S cars. There were some enclosed coupes (2 for in-house and 3 for customer racing) but I doubt Fleming knew his Astons this well...
  • Finally, there's the date. The DB Mark III was a new, hot car on the market when the book was written and set, 1957, as was the Jaguar 3.4. The DB3 was introduced in 1951 and ended production in 1957. The Aston Martin DBR1 was the racing car from the company by 1957, while the DB3S was a has-been. I can't see Fleming placing Bond in an outmoded racer.

So there's no definitive proof. But I feel confident that when Fleming wrote "DB III", he meant "DB Mark III" not "DB3". --SFoskett 22:01, Jun 25, 2005 (UTC)

Probably depends on the edition of the book because I know mine said DB3. It doesn't matter though. You're probably right and the edit made yesterday at least tells why it's Mark III and not the DB3. So I'm good with how it is. K1Bond007 22:26, Jun 25, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] The Living Daylights

this car is a Series 2 V8 Vantage. It is identifiable as a V8 Vantage by the closed-off hood bulge and as a Series 2 by the location of the turn signal lights. It's an appropriate Bond car, too. --SFoskett July 1, 2005 13:28 (UTC)

Astonmartins.com actually has a thorough investigation of this car (actually three cars). It was supposed to be a Series 2 V8 Vantage Volante, as seen at the beginning. However, the later scenes were filmed with a pair of non-Vantage Series 2 V8 saloons. I have updated these car pages with more details. But for the sake of this page, let's just say it was a V8 Vantage Volante, since that's what it was supposed to be. --SFoskett 22:38, July 19, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] can you place this car?

This image is about to be deleted.

If someone can place it in this article, it will be kept.--t-bte288-c 19:29, 17 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] another glider

I know that James uses a glider to land on an island. The "glider" was disposable and had short wings. It looked similar to the underwater propulsion devices scuba divers use. Could you help place this?

[edit] Tomorrow Never Dies

Blah, scratch that. I just presumed it was a Russian plane and looked right past the entry of it. Joffeloff 18:21, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] One vehicle missing

I'm trying to think if there are any vehicles missing from the list. The only one I can think of is the car driven by David Niven's James Bond in the 1967 Casino Royale. The car's main scene is the chase sequence after McTarry castle. I believe it had some gadgets, but I can't recall for sure. And I don't know enough about cars to make a guess as to the make and model. Since we're including the unofficial films, should we include the bicycle Bond rides in Never Say Never Again? ;-) 23skidoo 23:08, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

The only pictures I could find of it online (in a brief Google-only search) were here and don't show enough detail. I seem to vaguely remember, however, that it was a Lagonda (but not the model pictured in that Lagonda article). From the pictures on the external site though, it could just as easily be a Bentley – which would be in-keeping with the novels. – Kieran T (talk | contribs) 16:40, 23 November 2006 (UTC)
Watched it again last night. My memory of it being a Lagonda must come from somewhere else! The scene I'd imagined remembering, with a Lagonda badge clearly visible, wasn't there. So, based on the shape of the radiator, I'd have to say it looks more like a Bentley. But I'm by no means sure enough to put it into the article, sorry. – Kieran T (talk | contribs) 16:28, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Why tables?

This article was once one of my favourites, both in layout and content. The change to tables have, IMO, not helped it at all. This is made worse by the fact that whoever started the conversion appears to have given up half way through. I'd like to see it reverted to the old style, eg [3]. —Moondyne 02:49, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] films vs novels

is this page covering both? if so it needs some editing--— Typ932T | C  23:50, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
