Following the discussion on Talk:Mid Down (UK Parliament constituency) the list in the article is an attempt to identify every constituency used in Parliamentary etc. elections anywhere in Ireland, to suggest an 'index name' for the seat and to identify what is potentialy to be covered in a single constituency article.

The suggested format for article titles is 'Index Name (constituency)'. For example Antrim (constituency) or Antrim East (constituency).

Hopefully we can arrive at a consensus, so the articles will only have to be done once more. --Gary J 19:13, 1 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Patriot Parliament and categories

Hi Gary,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

Last week I wrote an article on the Patriot Parliament of 1689, complete with a list of members and their constituencies. I'd like to ask your advice/opinion on how the constituencies should be named. I'm of the opinion that Galway County for example should link to the page you've created for the similarly named constituency of the 19th century. This allows for more continuity and less headaches for people interested in political history in Ireland.

Also, you might be interested in the following categories, which we should try to use:

    • Thank you for your message. I have seen your excellent list of members of the Patriot Parliament. I had already found the source of this on the internet, but I had not previously appreciated the historical importance of this Irish Parliament. I am incorporating a link to the Patriot Parliament article in all the lists of constituency MPs I am doing for the Parliament of Ireland.
    • On constituency names I have now produced a list of all the Irish constituencies I can think of. I hope to produce a constituency article for each of them and then have (for example) the UK Parliament constituency articles converted to redirect links to the constituency articles. See List of Irish constituencies for my suggestions for the index version of constituency names.
    • Irish county names for Parliamentary purposes cause problems. Different lists on Wikipedia use different versions. County Galway is probably more correct than Galway County. However when you are dealing with a list it is, in my view, better to have county second. I have suggested the way to deal with the problem is to leave county out of the constituency title and to distinguish towns and cities of the same name. That is the county should be indexed as 'Galway' and the town as 'Galway Borough'. My suggested approach is not without problems. It contradicts the way the North and South divisions of Dublin County and City were distinguished after 1922, but I consider that the county is a more fundamental Parliamentary unit than the urban area of the same name.
    • It probably does not make a great deal of difference what version of a constituency name is used (as long as there is a link to the article containing the relevant information), but it might be helpful to have a common standard.

Categories: It is a bit ambiguous to have Irish MPs as a category, as this could mean members of the pre-1801 Parliament, MPs representing Ireland in the UK Parliament or even all Irishmen who represented Irish and non-Irish constituencies. Perhaps there should be an overall category of Legislators from Ireland, with sub-categories for members of particular bodies. If that seems too broad to be useful what is now being propsed seems to be an improvement. --Gary J 12:23, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
