Note: I cribbed these names from the indexes to John Boardman's 3 volume study on Greek pottery, and I also used his taxonomy of Black figure and red firgue archaic and classical. The list is mostly likely incomplete, and doesn't identify workshops or groups which it probably ought to. Also pre-classical and hellenistic era painters need to be added.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Twospoonfuls (talkcontribs)

Another thing; I notice the Grove list 78 vase painter's biographies - though there isn't much to be said about any of them this is clearly a defecit that needs to accounted.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Twospoonfuls (talkcontribs)
Its never pleasant to be reminded of the folly of your youth. I do wonder now what the point of this list is. At the very least it could be a way of cross-referencing a lot of otherwise unremarkable painters by period. But since few vase painters stand out as having any merit as artists, is really is it really much of a loss to scholarship not to record the names of those luckless artisans the "Worst Painter" or the "Painter of the Fat Boy Group"? In that respect one has to mavel at the industry of the contributors to German wikipedia's vasenmalerei category; it is as impressive as it is futile. If this list is going to be worth keeping eventually someone will have to add dates, schools and cities to the data. That person wont be me. Twospoonfuls 11:20, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
