Talk:List of Gears and vehicles in Xenogears

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

We need to redo the order so that "Enemy Gears" includes Seraph Angels and Deus Components, and Playable Gears has a section for "regular" and a section for "Omni". These are just some ideas to help make the page layout better. Deckiller 02:30, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

Hmm. I'm not sure Seraphs qualify as Gears, even though they're Gear-sized enemies. You don't see Rankars or Gear-Sized Chu-Chu listed anywhere (surely Chu Chu would be in the Playable Gears list otherwise, yes?).. Maybe rename the list to "Gear-Sized Enemies", or keep the current name and put non-Gear Gear-sized enemies in their own subsection at the bottom of the list. The Deus System and its components deserve their own dedicated section, I would think. One for actual enemies you fight in the game, and another section for its logical components that are described in the game (i.e. System Core Deus, Biological Computer Kadamony, Zohar Modifier Generator, etc..) [edit] Is 'Gear' a common or proper noun?

In the game and manual, 'Gear' is capitalized, but I don't see how it's a proper noun. If one were to say "Billy's Gear," it could mean that Billy owns a particular thing that's named Gear. But he owns a particular gear that is named Renmazou. One might say that 'Gears' are a particular mecha, but there isn't one particular object that is called Gear. (Likewise, Venus is a particular planet, and planets are particular celestial bodies, but 'planet' isn't the name of one specific thing.) Thus, I think that 'gear' should not be capitalized. I agree. Up until a few days ago, I lowercased Gear. I think that, unless someone else objects in the next day or so, we should move the page. Deckiller 03:56, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
Gear is capitalized, I would think, both to distinguish the term from the more common definitions of the word "gear" as well as because just about every other 'coined' name in videogames and anime (particularly those related to mecha) are usually also capitalized, more for aesthetic purposes than in the interests of preserving the grammatical rules of English. As "Gear" is capitalized in the game, it should remain so in the articles. My two cents. TKarrde 07:36, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
I think it's acceptable to deviate from standard grammar when it's a proper noun, e.g. 'chaos' in Xenosaga. But the manual also capitalizes other generic words like 'Controller,' 'Weapon,' 'Armor,' 'Accessory,' 'Field,' 'Dungeon,' and 'Ability.' If 'Gear' is going to be capitalized in Xenogears articles, then these words should be too. Or they should all be lowercase. As long as it's consistent. ArcTheLad 21:52, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
I think lowercase would be the way to go, since Wikipedia stresses consistancy in usage, and it would look awkward to have a sentence say "When the player Equips a Weapon onto the Gear, it will gain a special Ability". Deckiller 22:16, 18 January 2006 (UTC)
Gonna have to disagree here. The player's manual that comes with Xenogears suffers from a lot of the same translation issues that pop up intermittently in the game itself. Only 'Gear', character and location names and special -Terms- surrounded by dashes in the story itself should be capitalized. TKarrde 15:17, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Gear origins

Virtually all the technology seen in Xenogears was a part of the Eldridge, including all the gears sans Xenogears.

Untrue. The Zeboim civilization created Gear technology. Refer to flashback sequences in the Lighthouse area on Disc 2, particularly the films seen in the news studio building. Gears did not originate from the pre-Eldridge disaster civilization. TKarrde 23:15, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Kinda late, but the statement is correct. Zeboim was given technology by Miang in order to start a war that would purge the realm of the unsuitable human components, and the knowledge on Gears was among the information given to them, which in turn was passed on the the following generations through their ruins. Remember that the basis of Gears, the Slave Generator, could not have been initially developed by a civilisation that didn't even know about the Zohar, not to mention the Diabolos Gears that remained from the original Yaveh system, which Grahf employed to bring about his attempt of Armageddon. One of the, if not the only bit of technology that developed far beyond what was known in the Eldridge were Nanomachines, thanks to Kim, Taura and Krelian. Ephyon 21:07, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Regulus vs Regurus

I see that someone took it upon themselves to change the Regurus entry to their interpretation of what the translation should have been. Be consistent - if you're going to retranslate names, retranslate ALL of them (good luck, you've got a lot of work ahead of you). For example, Alkanshel is a misromanization of the kanji for Arukansheru, or Archangel. I'm changing this back to Regurus for consistency, as we're using the real names seen in the game itself (not what -I- think the developers were 'trying' to name it). teh TK 20:37, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
