Talk:List of Brazilian scientists

[edit] The purpose of this page could be to monitor our progress in writing the corresponding biographies
Brazil has thousands of scientists who have made notable contributions to human knowledge and who deserve mention, if not full biographies, in Wikipedia. This List of Brazilian scientists could be used to monitor our progress in writing their biographies, rather than the creation of hundreds of hard to locate stubs. We should take pride in watching red links on this list being replaced with blue ones.
As in discussions on the very useful Infobox:Scientist template, there is confusion here with "nationality" and "citizenship." No one was Brazilian if they were born before Brazilian independence in 1828, but it seems silly to place scientists born in Brazil in the Portuguese column. Many foreign-born scientists who immigrated to Brazil were granted Brazilian citizenship, and their careers unfolded mostly in this country. In their works, if not in their passports, they were Brazilian. I would vote for their inclusion in this list, often with the qualifier "US-born" or "German-born" where appropriate. This way, the famous ornithologist Helmut Sick, who worked almost all his life in Brazil, is not just a "German" scientist.
The dividing line between scientists and naturalists has yet to be drawn. For the moment, both Brazilian scientists and naturalists should find a safe harbor on this list.
