Talk:List of BSD operating systems

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A list of all the BSDs I've found and have been active recentlyish.

Terminology - I wasn't sure what words to use to distinguish things like Free/Net/OpenBSD, and those based on them: 'distribution' indicates forking in the Linux world. These 'redistributions' usually aren't forks.

Other BSDs - not sure about Mac OSX and Darwin etc. Also I'd like this to be a list of existing BSDs, not stuff like BSD-386 etc.

Other wiki pages - The Comparison of BSD operating systems page has many of these but not all: I wanted to list as many as possible without getting involved in all the details necessary for that comparison table.

Please feel free to make additions. -- 9ulk 01:10, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Debian GNU/kFreeBSD, Ging and Debian GNU/NetBSD are not BSD operating systems as they are GNU variants. I'm not sure about Gentoo/*BSD. -- mms 20:22, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
GNU/k*BSD are hybrids: GNU-derived userlands on top of BSD kernels. Therefore they could arguably be categorised as either GNU or BSD OSs. Letdorf (talk) 14:23, 22 February 2008 (UTC).
