Listening Woman
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Listening Woman is Tony Hillerman's third novel. What do I want to know about the book?? I would like to know about the Navaho culture and their tradition in this book. I would also like to know more about America. I would like to know what the people did for a living and about the physical characteristics. But what I would like to know most about this book is how the Navahos are different from the Americans and how their culture is different. Why did the author write the book?? I think the main point of the book was about the culture of the Navahos and their difference with the Americans. I think Tony Hillerman wanted to show the world a culture which was never talked about. Since he was brought up in a Navaho school, I think he thought it might be good to spread the fascinating culture of the Navahos to everybody in the world. I think he included the police and crime so that children would feel interested to read it instead of a book that felt like reading a documentary. Main Idea The main plot or main idea of the book is about the three mysteries. It is about the murder of Anna Atcitty and Hosteen Tso. It is also about the helicopter that had vanished and was believed to be a Navaho wolf and the Mercedes car that tried to run over the Joe Leaphorn. Then Joe Leaphorn finds Listening Women and interviews her about Anna Atcitty and Hosteen Tso’s murder. Then he finds Theodora Adams and wonders why she wants to go to Hosteen Tso’s house. This book is about James Tso escaping with the money from the Santa Fe robbery and killing the rest of the people (the boy scouts, Theodora, and Joe Leaphorn) including his brother, Benjamin Tso. It was only Joe Leaphorn, James Tso and Hosteen Tso that knew that James Tso had a brother and since Hosteen Tso died, Joe Leaphorn was the only one that knew that James Tso had a brother except himself. Later he would have killed Joe Leaphorn and run away with the money and when the FBI found the dead bodies, they would think James Tso was dead because they found his brother dead. So all this book was about was the escape of James Tso with the money. Later Joe Leaphorn and the gang escaped from the canyon an killed James Tso. Summary!! In the beginning of the book, Anna Atcitty and Hosteen Tso get murdered by someone. Then months later, somebody tried to run over Joe Leaphorn who was arresting Begay Boys. Joe saw a man with gold rimmed glasses and a big dog with him. Then Joe asked the Begay Boys to help him search for the man that tried to run him over but then the Begay Boy ran away. The chief of the Navaho police, Largo, gave Joe Leaphorn a choice. He could either look after the boy scouts or try to solve the case of the three mysteries: the helicopter, murder of Anna Atcitty and Hosteen Tso, and the Mercedes that tried to run over Leaphorn. Joe chooses to investigate on the three cases. Later he decides to first take up the case of the Mercedes. So he goes back to the place he found the car and investigates. He finds some footsteps that lead to the dessert. There he found 2 dead dogs that were killed by the big dog he saw in the car. Then later, he listens to the interview with Listening women and concludes that the interview wasn’t good. Then, he found Theodora Adams and took her to Hosteen Tso’s cottage. There he met Benjamin Tso who had got a note from Hosteen Tso 1 hour before Hosteen died and was he was there because he had to get away from Theodora. He also found out that McGinnis didn’t write the letter. Then he finds a boy with a lantern in the name of HAAS. This lantern was from the helicopter. Now Leaphorn got to know where the helicopter crashed. Then he goes to George Witover and talks about the Santa Fe robbery. They also talk about Hoski, Tull and the Buffalo Society. Later he went back to Hosteen’s cottage and found that Anna and Benjamin were missing. Then he started going toward the canyon. After he enters the canyon, Leaphorn gets attacked by the big dog. Goldrims and Tull set the rock which Leaphorn climbed on fire. Then they thought he was dead but he was still alive. He gets through the tunnel and finds the boy scouts, and Theodora. Then he fights the dog and kills it. Later he found Goldrims hiding place and everybody else. Now he figures out what all this is about. Then he helps Benjamin and they talk about what had happened. Then Benjamin and Jackie kill each other and Tull kills James Tso because he thought he used him. Then Joe rescues everybody and the canyon blows up.
This books involves a rather large and vicious dog, and Roman Catholic priest, a man who claims to be immortal, a maze of canyons and caves, Navajo sand paintings, and a group of kidnapped Boy Scouts and Boy Scout leaders.
Like the previous two books, this book features the character Joe Leaphorn.
