- Both East Anglia and Northumbria had been conquered by Danelaw in the late 860s. Both were neither autonomous or independent.
- Mercia was conquered by Danelaw in 873, they expelled Burgred and replaced him with a puppet king. However, much of the kingdoms power had been leeched to Wessex by 873, and its status as autonomous is contentious.
