- Exxon Valdez ( United States): Ran aground on Bligh Reef in Prince William Sound, Alaska, loaded with 53 million tonnes of crude oil.

- SS Maxim Gorkiy hit an ice floe near Svalbard, Norway. Passengers evacuated by lifeboat, ship later repaired and returned to service.
