- Herald of Free Enterprise ( United Kingdom): Passenger ferry sunk in the North Sea off Zeebrugge, Belgium after taking on water and capsizing and sinking stern first; the bow doors of this RO-RO (roll-on roll-off) ferry were subsequently discovered to have been left open. 193 fatalities.
