- Brigantine Julien Marie France sails wrecked on Porthminster beach, St. Ives, Cornwall, crew rescued by lifeboat.[1]

- SS City of Rio De Janeiro United States hit rocks near Golden Gate, San Francisco and sank. Approximately 135 passengers and crew killed.

- Barquentine Voorspoed Netherlands beached in Cornwall. Refloated two weeks later. Lost with all hands on next voyage, which was to Newfoundland.[2]

- SS Islander United Kingdom struck an iceberg off Juneau and sank. Forty passengers and crew killed.
