Schönborn appeared first in the County of Katzenelnbogen in 1373 when Gilbrecht of Schönborn, a vassal, served Eberhard V of Katzenelnbogen. Later it was a German statelet ruled by the Schönborn family located in Franconia and areas at the Main River in Germany, located to the south of Bamberg and to the southeast of Würzburg. Schönborn emerged as a Lordship in the 14th Century. It was raised to a Barony in 1663 and to a County in 1701. In 1717, it was partitioned into Schönborn-Heusenstamm (at Heusenstamm) and Schönborn-Wiesentheid (at Wiesentheid). See Notes1 for an explanation of German-English translation of County titles.

[edit] Notes

1Regarding personal names: Graf is a title, translated as Count, not a first or middle name. The female form is Gräfin.
1aThe German word for county is Grafschaft. This being a reference for the domain of a Count or Graf, Schönborn, for example, would be a Grafshaft.
2These counts bear the prefix, Illustrious Highness
3Erwein Anton of Schönborn-Wiesentheid renounced his title in 2004.
4Count Hugo-Damian of Schönborn is the father of Roman Catholic Cardinal Christoph Schönborn
