List of rulers of Bengal

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This page is a list of rulers of greater Bengal from antiquity through to the present era. From the earliest historical documents, it is evident that Bengal was predominantly under the rule of the Angas and to an extent under the early Magadhas. In the period following the Mahajanapadas, much of Ancient Bengal was integrated as part of the expanded Magadhan empire. With the decline of the Magadha Empire, Bengal fell into a state of anarchy punctuated by the reign of the famed King Shashanka, arch-enemy of the emperor Harshavardhana. After the death of Shashanka, Bengal once again slipped into the chaos of internecine warfare amongst local and regional warlords which lasted for over a century. The democratic rise to power of Gopala and the Pala Dynasty signalled an end to this period of Bengali history and signalled the beginning of the Golden Age of Bengal. With the fall of the Palas arose the fortunes of the rival Sena Dynasty, however their reign proved short-lived with the arrival of the Sultans. Following the subjugation of India by the East India Company, and transfer of control to the Crown of England, Bengal was first partitioned in 1905 in order to fuel existing religious tensions and quash the independence movement. Following the division of Bharat into India and Pakistan, Western Bengal went to India, while Eastern Bengal went to Pakistan. Following the Bangladesh Liberation War the Eastern portion of Bengal gained its independence as the sovereign nation of Bangladesh. To this day Bengal is divided as West Bengal (as an Indian province) and Bangladesh.
