[edit] Central Districts
- Cardiff city centre Cardiff's main shopping area, the eighth-largest in the UK. Also home to historical and cultural attractions such as:
- Cardiff Castle
- National Museum and Gallery of Wales
- New Theatre
- St David's Hall
- Sherman Theatre
- Cardiff's Victorian Arcades (listed under covered shopping malls)
- Cardiff City Hall
- Cathays Park The magnificent Civic Centre crafted out of white Portland Stone. Home to the majority of Cardiff University's buildings, the Museum, City Hall, and government offices
Formerly called Tiger Bay, this was where the world's first million-pound cheque was signed, and was the centre of the global coal industry 100 years ago. Due to the rapid decline of coal, this vast area became very poor and run down, to the extent that much of it was abandoned. In the 1980s the Cardiff Bay Development Corporation was set up to redevelop the area. Since then the area has been transformed beyond all recognition, and is considered a trendy place for young professionals to live. The name was changed to Cardiff Bay in an effort to rid the area of its notoriously rough reputation. Attractions now include:
- Red Dragon Centre (formerly Atlantic Wharf Leisure Village, this is basically an out of town style development in a fairly central location)
- Mermaid Quay (shopping and eating on the waterfront)
- Wales Millennium Centre (Opera House and Welsh entertainment landmark)
- Y Senedd (Seat of the Welsh government)
- Techniquest (hands on science exhibitions for children and teenagers)
- The Coal Exchange (concert venue, soon to be revamped)
- St David's Hotel & Spa (5-star Rocco Forte hotel)
- Cardiff Bay Wetlands Reserve
- Cardiff International Sports Village (under construction and once a candidate for the site of the UK's first regional super casino)
The Bay is also home to many luxury apartment developments and offices.
