Afghanistan's capital city is Kabul. It is the powerhouse of the Afghan economy and is by far the largest city. The second city is Herat.
The following are politically, geographically or economically notable places in Afghanistan.
According to 2006 estimates by the Central Statistics Office of Afghanistan, the ten largest cities in terms of population are:

- Puli Khumri - 180,800
- Jalalabad - 168,600
- Charikar - 153,500
