List of motor yachts by length
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a list of the world's longest motor luxury yachts in order of their length. Whilst this closely correlates with other measures of size such as tonnage (a measure of weight), displacement (a measure of volume), or accommodation area, the correspondence is not exact, and the rankings should not be taken as a definitive ranking of size.
Whilst many businesses and organisations use length as an indication of the general trend, and the below is fascinating for the lay person, the true statistic of a yacht's size is its gross tonnage. Not to be confused with weight/displacement, this is in fact a measurement of a vessel's volume, what it can carry and accommodate.
For example, the Italians are renowned for building the greatest number of yachts (across all tiers) and therefore, the greatest number of lengths. In superyacht terms however, as The Yacht Report identified in January 2008, Germany actually builds the world's largest yachts. To put this in figures for a comparison:
Italy has produced c. 37 km of superyacht over 30m with a total gross tonnage (GT) of 167,415 tons whilst Germany has produced c. 12.5 km of superyacht over 30m with a total of 180,473 GT.
This clearly identifies that length is not an adequate justification for superyacht size, let alone comparison between yachts. This can easily be highlighted at the top of the scale of individual yachts as Al Salamah a 139m megayacht jumps from 7th place in terms of length, to 2nd, just behind Eclipse in gross tonnage (12,234 GT). To reference this, a fully comprehensive list of the superyacht global fleet exists in the form of the International Yacht Register - this is produced by The Yacht Report magazine
Some published lists exclude luxury yachts owned by or on behalf of heads of state and since these include the largest yacht in the world this leads to inconsistencies in reported rankings for all major yachts. Rising Sun, which is ranked fourth in the list below, is often called the largest yacht in the world, and she is the largest yacht which is certainly owned by a private citizen, namely the American software tycoon Larry Ellison. (The newest largest megayacht, Eclipse, is supposed to belong to Roman Abramovich, a private citizen, but his ownership of the mentioned yacht has not been officially confirmed.) The Al Salamah was once believed to be registered in the name of the late King Fahd of Saudi Arabia, but was then discovered to be registered in the name of Crown Prince Sultan and it is a matter of debate whether she is a state yacht or not. Publicly available information about the Saudi royal family's yachts is minimal. The largest Saudi royal yacht, the Prince Abdulaziz, was owned by King Fahd and has most likely been taken over by his successor King Abdullah.
The longest yacht available for charter is the sixth ranked Savarona, but the seventh ranked Alexander can accommodate more passengers.
