[edit] Isle O' Hags

Isle O' Hags
Isle O' Hags

Isle O' Hags is the fictional island on which the Banjo-Kazooie universe takes place. This island derives its name from the evil witches that roam the area. These witches include the evil Gruntilda Winkybunion and her two sisters Mingella & Blobbelda.

[edit] Spiral Mountain

Spiral Mountain is home to many characters, including Banjo himself. Banjo’s house lies on the outer part of Spiral Mountain. Gruntilda's Lair resides high up on a cliff opposite the Spiral Mountain itself.

Spiral Mountain derives its name from the spiral-shaped mountain that lies in the heart of the area, surrounded by a moat. The area goes through some damage in Banjo-Tooie after Grunty's sisters plow through with a powerful digging machine to rescue Gruntilda from beneath the rock she was trapped under during the conclusion of the first game. This area features several molehills that belong to Bottles, who teaches Banjo and Kazooie most of the moves they use throughout the games.

[edit] Gruntilda's Lair

Gruntilda's Lair is a dark and sinister lair, home to Gruntilda Winkybunion. In Banjo-Kazooie the lair acts as a main lobby, where Banjo and Kazooie enter the many worlds from. However, to unlock and enter the different worlds, they must first collect a certain number of Jiggies and put them in the painting-puzzles located throughout the lair. Once the puzzles are completed, the entrances themselves are opened and a sign bearing the name of the word is placed above the entrance. While exploring the lair, Grunty frequently makes comments about the duo and their progress.

In Banjo-Tooie, the lair is accessible by climbing the now broken bridge, but players can only enter the main entrance, where Cheato resides and will exchange five of his missing pages for cheat codes. Other parts of the lair are blocked by boulders that presumably fell when Grunty's sisters drilled through Spiral Mountain. Rumors fueled by the room's title, "Gruntilda's Lair (Entrance)", led some to believe there might actually be another accessible room, but hackers have discovered that nothing actually exists on the other side of the rocks. One particular hacker discovered a string of text that possibly indicates that there was originally an expanded purpose to the lair than just housing Cheato. The text that the hacker loaded was "Gruntilda's Lair (Tower Room)", although all attempts to load the actual map so far, have failed. [1]

In Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge, a game that takes place in-between Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie, Grunty returns to her base 30 years in the past for the game's final few battles. The only rooms shown are three small rooms where Banjo and Kazooie fight Klungo, then Grunty and then Klungo again; and the roof, where they fight Grunty in the final battle of the game. It appears that the place where Grunty's Lair resides was originally going to be a shrine to the Jinjo King of that period, judging by the broken stone head that resembles that of King Jingaling's on the ground near the Lair (which possibly explains why Jinjo statues appear atop of the tower during the final battle of Banjo-Kazooie). There are many worlds in her lair, which are suggested to have been created for her personal use.

[edit] Mumbo's Mountain

Mumbo's Mountain is a large mountain presumably owned by the shaman Mumbo Jumbo. Mumbo's Mountain is inhabited by imps, termites, and an invincible ox. It is home to Chimpy the Chimpanzee, Conga the Gorilla, and Mumbo himself. Mumbo transforms Banjo and Kazooie into a termite when they request his services here.

[edit] Treasure Trove Cove

Treasure Trove Cove is an island with a tall arch-shaped cliff, a lighthouse, a large sandcastle where cheat codes can be entered and "Sharkfood Island", where the infamous pink egg is located. The cove is inhabited by clams, crabs, razor-toothed treasure chests such as Lockup, who has Gruntilda's booty, and naval mines that float in pools of water on several areas of the island. Mumbo resides in a hut within the grounds and his transformation for Banjo and Kazooie here is a small pumpkin.

It is home to Eyrie the eagle, Gnawty the beaver, Nabnut the squirel, and temporarily to Gobi the camel. Mumbo resides in a hut in Click Clock Wood and his transformation for Banjo and Kazooie is a bee, though he'll only transform them during spring, in summer he'll say it's too hot for magic, in Autumn he'll say he's too busy raking up leaves and is on holidays in winter, as said by a beehive.

Mumbo Jumbo resides here along with Humba Wumba, who transforms the duo into a Submarine.

[edit] Hailfire Peaks

Hailfire Peaks (a possible play on the word hellfire or the fact that this location has both a snowy mountain (hail) and fire) is a giant twin-peaked mountain, of which one side is of ice and snow the other is of fire and lava. They are both watched over by the dragon brothers, Chilli Billi and Chilly Willy. The peaks are inhabited by a variety of fiery and icy creatures and home to Boggy and his family, aliens who have crashed on the ice side, Sabreman and Gobi, who finally reaches his intended destination. The fire side contains a Colesseum while the ice side contains a large grotto, there are two train stations in Hailfire Peaks, of which one is usually inaccsessible. Mumbo Jumbo resides here along with Humba Wumba, who transforms the duo into a Snowball.

The fire side of the mountain was originally planned to be "Mount Fire Eyes" in Banjo-Kazooie.

When viewing the Isle o' Hags from above in Cloud Cukooland, Hailfire Peaks can be seen a short distance offshore.

[edit] Wasteland

Wasteland is a wasteland area in Isle 'O' Hags, accessible only by swimming under a lake in Pine Grove. It houses the entrance to Terrydactyland and the bubble that rises to Cloud Cuckooland.

[edit] Terrydactyland

Terrydactyland is an ancient prehistoric land dominated by a large mountain. In a nest at the top of the mountain resides Terry, a disgruntled single parent pterodactyl. Terrydactyland is inhabited by dinosaurs and cavemen. It is home to Dippy, Stomponadon, Chompa and the Styracosaurus family. Mumbo Jumbo resides here along with Humba Wumba, who transforms the duo into either a Baby T. rex or a Daddy T. rex.

[edit] Cloud Cuckooland

Cloud Cuckooland is a world that floats exceedingly high above the Isle O' Hags, made of an enormous, hollow purple mountain, surrounded by floating platforms of various oddities including a large wedge of smelly cheese, a pot of gold, and a gigantic trash can. Cloud Cuckooland is inhabited by strange, paper-like goblin creatures wielding all kinds of odd weapons such as sausages and candy canes. It is home to Canary Mary, the Zubbas and Mr. Fit. A giant safe called Superstash, who has forgotten his code, resides in the central cavern inside the mountain. Mumbo Jumbo resides here, however there are two skulls. The second belongs to Mingy Jongo who is impersonating Mumbo for unknown reasons. Humba Wumba also resides here and will transform the duo into a Bee.

[edit] Grunty Industries

It is home to Loggo, who was moved here from Mad Monster Mansion, Clinker the loudspeaker and Weldar, a large welding torch who resides in the factory's air conditioning plant. Grunty Industries is a testament to Gruntilda's disdain for the environment, much in the vein of Rusty Bucket Bay. Mumbo Jumbo resides here (in a metallic skull) along with Humba Wumba, who transforms the duo into a Washing Machine.

[edit] Cauldron Keep

Cauldron Keep is a large castle-keep and the lair of Mingella and Blobbelda Winkybunion located at the top of Isle 'O' Hags. Grunty also resides here with her sisters. Cauldron Keep is the game's final level, though not a bona fide level like the others, as Jiggies, other items, and characters (Mumbo Jumbo, Humba Wumba and Sgt. Jamjars) are all absent. Banjo and Kazooie confront Klungo in the entrance hall for the final time. They are then forced to play and survive Grunty's Tower of Tragedy quiz, which is similar to Grunty's Furnace Fun in Banjo-Kazooie. After the credits roll, a cutscene shows Banjo and Kazooie reversing B.O.B.'s effects to bring King Jingaling and Bottles back to life, followed by a showdown on the roof/ glass dome with Gruntilda in her Hag 1 machine, which they manage to destroy.
