  • Eric The Penguin - the cartoon penguin from Chris Masters' famous greeting cards.
  • Opus. First a minor character in Bloom County, then one of the main characters in Outland, and currently (2008) the principal and eponymous character of Opus. All three comic strips are by Berkeley Breathed.
  • Oscar - a Penguin in the Comic Strip Arctic Circle. He gets peacock feathers implanted on his head in order to be more attractive to females.
  • "Penny and Poppy Penguin," stereotypical penguins misused by Bill in the Cat in his bigoted attacks on penguins in Bloom County.

  • Sparky the Wonder Penguin. One of the main characters in the satirical comic strip This Modern World by Tom Tomorrow.
  • Les indégivrables, a French political cartoon with an all-penguin cast by Xavier Gorce, appearing in the online edition of Le Monde
  • In a 1954 Uncle Scrooge adventure by Carl Barks, a penguin kept trying to hatch a ball of Bombastium, a rare and valuable mineral. This allowed Scrooge and his nephews to find the Bombastium when it would otherwise have been lost. In gratitude, McDuck kept the penguin well-supplied with penguin eggs. One need not assume this penguin is a female. Among the Emperor penguins, it is the male who hatches the eggs. In other species, the genders take turns.

The hero of a series of children's books written by Helen Lester and illustrated by Lynn Munsinger, including Tacky the Penguin (1988), Three Cheers for Tacky (1994), and Tacky and the Emperor (2000). Tacky is "an odd bird, but a very nice bird to have around." His friends are Goodly, Lovely, Angel, Neatly and Perfect. They love Tacky because he keeps saving the day - not in spite of his eccentricities and oddities, but because of them.
