List of evangelical seminaries and theological colleges
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a list of evangelical seminaries and theological colleges which prepare candidates for ministry in Evangelical Christian churches. Some, but not all, attendees seek ordination as ministers.
In the latter part of the 19th century and early part of the 20th under the increasing influence of German higher criticism, most of the major venues of theological education in the United States had moved away from certain aspects of historic Christian belief or from their primary mission of training future clergy. This led many conservatives to start small Bible colleges. However, while these helped supply pastors, they did not supply the top tier scholars that the Seminaries had. After the evangelical revival of the 1940's and 1950's a number of evangelical leaders saw the need and opportunity to re-establish schools which both emphasized the authority of the Bible and rigorous scholarship.
There are many vehicles for theological education throughout the world. This list, however, focuses specifically on those of high academic standards and also are broadly speaking, part of the evangelical movement. Therefor, for purposes of neutrality this is defined as
- Are Protestant.
- Accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada
- Offer the Master of Divinity,
- Have a statement of faith which affirms the authority of Scripture, inerrancy or infallibility.
