The following is a list of episodes in Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow.

Contents

[edit] Part 1: Beyond the Zero

[edit] Episode 1

Set in London at the home of Pirate Prentice on Monday, December 18, 1944, the episode begins with Pirate dreaming about the evacuation of London. When he wakes up he manages to save a friend but sees the launch of a V-2 rocket from the Netherlands.

[edit] Episode 2

Later on the same day Pirate hosts one of his famous "Banana Breakfasts" before he is called to a rocket crash site to retrieve a message. There is a long flashback at this point to 1914 and the Eastern Question. This scene transforms into a horrific image of London about to be eaten by a giant Adenoid.

[edit] Episode 3

Set at noon on the same day at the headquarters of ACHTUNG we are shown, via a photograph of Lt. Tyrone Slothrop's cubicle, a map of Slothrop's sexual conquests around London.

[edit] Episode 4

In the afternoon on the same day on the road back from Greenwich where Pirate was sent to retrieve the message the reader is introduced to Slothrop for the first time. This episode contains many flashbacks to Slothrop's childhood and ancestry.

[edit] Episode 5

Set in the evening on the same day, Roger Mexico and Jessica Swanlake are participating in a séance. Through the visions experienced the reader is introduced to Blicero, the Teutonic God of death. There is also a flashback to Pirate's tour of service in the Persian Gulf.

[edit] Episode 6

Early the next morning Roger and Jessica drive to meet Dr. Pointsman, a Pavlovian scientist. The reader is also shown how Roger and Jessica's relationship began and the how it will end in the form of a character called Jeremy.

[edit] Episode 7

Roger and Pointsman chase a shell shocked dog around the scene of a V-2 strike.

[edit] Episode 8

Set on the Abreaction Ward of St. Veronica's Hospital, Kevin Spectro discusses the case of Slothrop with Pointsman. The issue is that Slothrop experiences sexual excitement at places where V-2 rockets will land in the future. This is a parallel to the supersonic impacts of the V-2 whereby observers would at first only see the rocket and hear it only after it had impacted.

[edit] Episode 9

Set on the morning of December 20th, Jessica is woken by a rocket landing and she goes to look out the window. Through her mind's eye the reader is shown flashbacks to Roger explaining complex statistics to Jessica (such as the Poisson distribution) and then into a conversation between Roger and Pointsman on the correlation between the rocket strikes and Slothrop's erections. The episode is cyclically structured and returns to Jessica standing by the window at its end.

[edit] Episode 10

Under the influence of a forced injection of Sodium Amytal in the hospital ward Slothrop hallucinates that he has dropped his mouth harp down a toilet in 1939 and journeys down into the sewers to retrieve it. This hallucination shifts to a vision of a cowboy called Crutchfield the Westwardman preparing for a duel with another called Toro Rojo. This episode also contains a clever play on the semantics of sentence structure in the mysterious phrase "You never did the Kenosha Kid".

[edit] Episode 11

Pirate deciphers the message that came out of the rocket. The message is to do with the extraction of Katje Borgesius from the Netherlands.

[edit] Episode 12

[edit] Episode 13

December 22 on the Dover coastline and the discussion of Slothrop continues. The reader is introduced to Brigadier General Pudding who raises concern for Slothrop's wellbeing.

[edit] Episode 14

Katje Borgesius psychologically conditions Octopus Grigori for use in the experiment on Slothrop. The narrative then shifts to when Katje was in the Netherlands with Blicero and his sex slave Gottfried working on a V-2 battery. The narrative moves even further back in time focusing, through a seventeenth century relation of Katje, upon the extinction of the Dodo and colonisation before returning to the present time.

[edit] Episode 15

December 23, 1944 and Slothrop is released from hospital where he meets up with an old girlfriend. They retreat to a flat in the East End and having become intoxicated on Wine gums they have sexual intercourse.

[edit] Episode 16

A series of flashbacks from the viewpoint of Jessica and Roger which include carol singing and sexual encounters.

[edit] Episode 17

Slothrop has been sent to France while the hospital where he was previously has been destroyed by a V-2 strike. Pointsman imagines himself winning the Nobel Prize for unravelling this mystery.

[edit] Episode 18

This episode consists of two flashbacks, the first to Berlin around 1930 and the second to Palm Sunday in 1942 where a group of pilots see a vision in the city of Lübeck which proves important in the context of the earlier séance.

Slothrop starts to question whether the incident on the beach was as it seems. Octopus Grigori is reunited with his keeper and Katje arranges a midnight rendezvous with Slothrop. As they are engaged in sexual intercourse beneath a tablecloth, Slothrop's clothes and identity papers are stolen. He chases the thief out onto a balcony and into a tree. The thief climbs down the tree and Slothrop climbs up. He sees saw marks in the branches and the tree breaks, throwing him to the ground. On returning to his room (limping) he finds it is now empty of all his possessions.
