  • January 15: Acre declared independence from Bolivia.
  • February 3: Kano was dissolved and incorporated into Northern Nigeria.
  • May 13: Acre was occupied by Brazilian troops.
  • July 7: Sokoto was conquered and its territory was divided between the British and the French.
  • August 31: Acre declared independence.
  • November 3: Panama declared independence from Colombia.
  • 1903: Aceh was dissolved.

By 1903, the whole of Africa – aside from the widely recognized independent countries of Abyssinia and Liberia – was claimed by the European powers. Despite this, several native states remained essentially independent of their nominal colonial overlords.

  • Kano - The Emirate of Kano was an independent state located in the British colony of Northern Nigeria. It was dissolved on February 3.
  • Flag of Libya Sokoto - The Sokoto Caliphate was an independent state located in the British colony of Northern Nigeria. It was dissolved on July 7.
  • Ouaddai[7] - The Ouaddai Empire was an independent state in the French territory of Chad.

  • Aceh - The Sultanate of Aceh was a state in rebellion against the government of the Dutch East Indies. It submitted to the Dutch in 1903.
  • Acre - The Independent State of Acre was a self-declared independent state in the internationally recognized territory of Bolivia. It declared independence on January 15, was occupied by Brazilian troops on May 13, and then declared independence again on August 31.
  • Katagalugan - The Tagalog Republic was a self-declared independent state in the internationally recognized US Territory of the Philippines.
