A portrait of Chopin in 1847

This is a list of compositions by Frédéric Chopin.

His larger scale works such as the four ballades, the four scherzi, the Barcarolle Op. 60, the Fantaisie Op. 49, and sonatas have cemented a solid place within the repertoire, as well as shorter works like his impromptus, mazurkas, nocturnes, waltzes and polonaises taking a substantial portion of recorded and performed music. Two important collections are the 24 Preludes, Op. 28, and the études Op. 10 and 25, which are a staple of that genre for pianists. In addition, he wrote several song settings of Polish texts, and chamber pieces including a piano trio and a cello sonata.

Chopin's piano concertos (No.1 and No. 2) are two of the romantic piano concerto repertoire's most often-performed examples.

Both sections of this list use the traditional opus numbers, as well as catalogue numbers from Krystyna Kobylanska (KK), Josef Michal Chominski (A, D, C, P, E), and Maurice J. E. Brown (B).

Most of Chopin's compositions were for solo piano. He did compose two piano concertos as well as some other music for ensembles.

[edit] Notes

  1. ^ Chopin's Op. 22 is most often called "Grande Polonaise Brillante preceded by Andante Spianato". The first part, Andante Spianato, is a lengthy piano solo, which segues into the Grande Polonaise, which is a piece in the Polonaise style, composed for Piano and Orchestra. In this respect, it is best to classify the entire opus under "Piano with Orchestra", because the solo part can be played alone, but it is an extract of the entire work as a whole.
