List of comics spin-offs

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A spin-off in comics is a new comic which contains either characters or theme elements from an old comic. For more information on the subject, see spin-off. A related phenomenon not to be confused with the spin-off, is the crossover.

[edit] Criteria for a comics spin-off

Before a comic can be considered a spin-off, it has to match the following criteria:

  • When a series undergoes a name change, its successor is considered a spin-off from the original series. For example, Scarlet Spider is considered a spin-off from Spider-Man.
  • "True Spin-Offs" are spin-offs that take established characters from one comic book and give them their own book or series (e.g. Silver Surfer from Fantastic Four). "Engineered Spin-Offs" are spin-offs that introduce a character to one comic just so that that character can anchor a new series, an example being the Thunderbolts spinning out of The Hulk. Series such as Young Avengers which have no immediate connection to previous series but are still known to exist within the same fictional sphere are called "Franchise Spin-Offs".
