  • Amberfuce was a ghostwaif, a being with the ability to read, and empty, minds. Like many others, he moved from the Deepwoods to Undertown in search of a better life. Unlike others, he actually found what he was looking for. The ambitious waif signed on with crafty academic Vox Verlix and helped him usurp the position of Most High Academe from Cowlquape Pentephraxis. In return, Amberfuce was made High Chancellor of Undertown and Sanctaphrax. He helped Vox make deals with the shrykes, the goblins, the librarian knights and the Guardians of Night, always taking a large percentage of the acquired gold for himself. Among his jobs was the task of completely emptying the minds of Vox's slaves, making them complacent but completely indifferent. After Vox set off the dark maelstrom, Amberfuce managed to trick himself out of Vox's palace along with his nurse, Flambusia Flodfox, ultimately leading to Vox's demise as they stole his only means of escape. Amberfuce, who had had dealings with the Master of the Foundry Glade, Hemuel Spume, hired the services of sky pirate Deadbolt Vulpoon's treacherous quartermaster, Quillet Plume and a small crew to take him to the Glade. After thwarting an attempt by Plume to ditch Amberfuce and Flambusia, the ghostwaif sentenced the pirates to slave work in the foundries upon their arrival. Spume bought plans from Amberfuce, designed by Vox, for huge machines that would tear the Free Glades apart; so-called glade-eaters. Amberfuce lived a life of total luxury in the Foundry Glade, cared for by a team of gabtrolls. His nurse, Flambusia, was made to work as a maid. After Hemuel departed for the Free Glades, never to return again, the Foundry slaves escaped, leaving Amberfuce sitting, alone, in what should have been a warm tub of water, but was now neglected and cold. Flambusia, also forgotten, found Amberfuce and, resentful because of her treatment, boiled the helpless waif alive. Amberfuce appears in Vox and Freeglader.

  • The banderbear that Twig meets is never specifically named. Twig comes across this creature in the forest, and, seeing that the bear has a rotten tooth, pulls the tooth out. The two of them start an idyllic life together, with the banderbear selecting which fruits would be good for Twig to eat, which are poisonous. This period of Twig's life, the happiest so far, is cut short, as the banderbear is attacked by its mortal enemies, the wig-wigs. Twig survives, but the banderbear is killed. Twig wears the tooth he pulled from the banderbear's mouth around his neck. The Banderbear appears in Beyond the Deepwoods.
  • Bogwitt was a member of the treasury guard in Sanctaphrax. He later joined Twig's crew, and sailed aboard The Edgedancer. When the ship exploded in open sky, he fell to Undertown and lost his memory. He and Wingnut Sleet lived in the sewers underneath the boom docks, until Twig found them. He then stayed in the school of light and darkness in Sanctaphrax, until Twig returned from Riverrise. He accompanied Twig aboard The Skyraider, but died of the blackwater fever some years later.
  • Bungus Septrill was an old earth-scholar who lived in Sanctaphrax. He tended to the almost-ignored Great Library of Sanctaphrax. He was a good friend of Most High Academe Linius Pallitax. He often ventured into the stonecomb. Bungus met Quintinius Verginix and Maris Pallitax when they also ventured into the stonecomb, trying to follow Maris' father Linius, who was making visits to the stonecomb (and the Ancient Laboratory. They were set upon by a rogue glister, a huge monster inhabiting the rock. Twig and Maris were almost killed by the glister, but Bungus rescued them, using a substance called chine to drive the glister off. Bungus brought Quint and Maris back up to the city of Sanctaphrax, however Quint managed to slip off with Bungus' cloak, wanting to find out what was in the Ancient Laboratory (he had heard screaming). Bungus arrives at Linius' Palace of Shadows and forces him to explain why he has been visiting the Ancient Laboratory. Linius reveals that he has created a gloamglozer, an old demon who had become extinct. Bungus, realizing that Quint was about to face the demon, hurries into the stonecomb, but is accosted by the rogue glister. Since Quint is wearing Bungus' cloak, Bungus cannot access his supply of chine, and he battles the glister futilely. Bungus manages to trap the glister in its lair, but he is drained almost dry by the glister's hunger, and dies soon after. Bungus Septrill appears in The Curse of the Gloamglozer.

  • Cal Barkwater was the brother of Tem and grandfather of Rook. He apparently died before Tem, because Tem saw his image in the Twilight Woods and ran off to be with him.
  • Cowlquape Pentephraxis was a young sub-acolyte in Sanctaphrax. He was the son of Ulbus Pentephraxis. Cowlquape was nervous around most people, but he was an avid reader, enjoying the tales of Riverrise and Kobold the Wise. Cowlquape had a profound fear of heights. When Ulbus was killed by a piece of sky ship falling from the sky during a storm, the funds allowing Cowlquape to stay in Sanctaphrax ran low. Cowlquape managed to avoid being thrown out for a while, but he was eventually ratted out by Vox Verlix, a bullying apprentice cloudwatcher. Just before he was thrown from Sanctaphrax, however, he saved a delirious Twig from death by jumping off a tower. In return, Twig made Cowlquape his apprentice. When Twig set out on a journey to find the rest of his crew (his sky ship, the Edgedancer, had been destroyed, its crewmembers flung all over the Edge), Cowlquape accompanied him. They traveled all over the Edge, eventually arriving at Riverrise, a place Cowlquape had always wanted to see (now sadly devoid of water). There, they realize that strange weather phenomena that have been plaguing the Edge actually heralded the arrival of a Mother Storm, and that if the storm were to seed Riverrise with new life and water, the rock of Sanctaphrax would need to be moved out of the way. Having little more than half a day left, Twig and Cowlquape sky-fire themselves to Undertown (an extremely risky operation, involving being tied to a burning trunk of buoyant wood). Cowlquape cuts the Anchor Chain, allowing the rock of Sanctaphrax to float free. The Mother Storm passes over Undertown and rejuvenates the Edgewater River. Twig declares Cowlquape the new Most High Academe. Cowlquape oversees the fastening of a new Sanctaphrax rock to a chain. Cowlquape's reign as Most High Academe does not last long. Vox Verlix usurps the position, throwing Cowlquape into the dungeon of the newly-built Tower of Night. There he befriends one of the Guardians of Night, Xanth Filatine. Cowlquape is eventually rescued by his old friend, Twig, as well as a young librarian knight, Rook Barkwater. Cowlquape joins the order of the librarians and becomes their Most High Academe. He helps to oversee the flight from Undertown to the Free Glades after Vox creates a dark maelstrom, and when the librarians finally regain peace at the Free Glades, Cowlquape remains Most High Academe. Cowlquape appears in Midnight over Sanctaphrax, The Last of the Sky Pirates, Vox and Freeglader.

[edit] D

  • Deadbolt Vulpoon was a sky pirate, leader of the Armada of the Dead, and the son of Thunderbolt Vulpoon. He lived during the time in which the Edge was stricken by stone-sickness, and his piracy was limited to the occasional raid on the Great Mire Road against the shrykes. Deadbolt was captured by the shrykes during such a raid, but was freed by Rook Barkwater. Deadbolt managed to escape. Later, Rook and Felix Lodd convinced Deadbolt to abandon his headquarters, the Armada, and accompany the fleeing Undertowners to the Free Glades and away from the dark maelstrom which was destroying Undertown. Deadbolt, remembering his debt to Rook, complied and was one of the chief marshals, directing the huge crowd of Undertowners across the Edge. Deadbolt also took a major part in the Battle of the Lufwood Mount, commanding all the sky pirates. Deadbolt survived to

[edit] F

  • Forficule was a nightwaif assistant of Mother Horsefeather's. He was sent to Sanctaphrax in an attempt to convince Vilnix Pompolnius that the Professor of Light was dead. However, Pompolnius tortured the true information out of him, and had his ears cut off. He was reduced to a beggar on the streets of Undertown, until Slitch used him in an experiment to create Phraxdust. Forficule ground it down to early, and killed both Slitch and himself in the process.
  • Flabsweat was the owner of an exotic-pet shop. Some of the animals he displays could be considered more slaves than pets, such as banderbears, oakelves and waterwaifs. He also captured Twig's caterbird. When Twig freed the caterbird, Flabsweat started a grudge against him, but when he encountered Twig at a later occasion, Twig gave the retailer a lifetime supply of phraxdust, causing the man to forgive Twig completely. Twig pushed Flabsweat's gratitude even further, taking three creatures, Goom, Spooler and Woodfish, as part of his new sky pirate crew. Flabsweat's shop was damaged by pieces of Twig's sky ship, the Edgedancer, falling on it in a storm.
  • Flambusia Flodfox was the cloddertrog nurse to Amberfuce. Although she appeared to revere the old ghostwaif, she actually had a bit of a pent-up hate for Amberfuce inside her. Flambusia and Amberfuce escaped the destruction of Undertown, hiring the services of sky pirate quartermaster Quillet Plume to bring them to the Foundry Glades. When they arrived there, Foundry Master Hemuel Spume made Flambusia into a slave. Flambusia was especially angry about this because her ward, Amberfuce, made no move to stop this happening. After the Foundry Glades were abandoned, Flambusia tracked down Amberfuce and, letting out years of mistreatment and frustration, she killed him. What happened to Flambusia herself is unknown. Flambusia Flodfox appears in Vox (Edge Chronicles) and Freeglader.

[edit] G

  • Garlinius Gernix was a Knight Academic who was sent stormchasing. Like many before and a few after him, Garlinius was unsuccessful, and succumbed to an endless, decaying life in the Twilight Woods. Garlinius appears in The Curse of the Gloamglozer and Stormchaser.
  • Gobrat was a low-ranking Guardian of Knight whom Rook Barkwater captured in order to access his keys and free Cowlquape, who was a prisoner there.
  • Goom was an adolescent banderbear who was captured by exotic-pet retailer Flabsweat. He was freed by Twig, however, and signed onto the crew of the Edgedancer. In a storm, the ship was torn apart and its crew flung all around the Edge. Goom was captured by Mother Muleclaw I of the Great Shryke Slave Market, and his fate would have been to be thrown to wig-wigs for the market visitors' sport if not for Twig's timely intervention. Goom died later in an incident aboard Twig's new sky ship, the Skyraider. Goom appears in Stormchaser and Midnight Over Sanctaphrax, and is mentioned in Last of the Sky Pirates.

[edit] H

  • Hax Vostillix was the Hall master of High Cloud during Quint's time at the Knight's Academy. He had the other three hall masters fired under suspicion of earth-scholarship. At the time, Sanctaphrax was stretching the anchor chain to breaking point. He sent out many Knight Academics in pursuit of false Great Storms, making himself very unpopular. He sent Screedius Tollinix out in pursuit of a regular storm, and was eventually assassinated by Vilnix Pompolnius.
  • Hekkle was a Shryke contact who assisted Rook, Stob and Magda on their journey to the freeglades. She meets them in The Eastern Roost and disguises them as sooth-sisters to escape into The Deepwoods. She accompanied them all the way to the Freeglades, and foraged food for them along the way. She was also the first to recognise the Logworm which Stob and Magda accidentally sat on.
  • Hubble was a banderbear crewmember aboard Stormchaser. He saved Cloud Wolf's life by defending him from the mutinous quartermaster Slyvo Spleethe. However, he left the helm to do this, and caused the ship to spin out of control. He and the other crewmembers abandoned ship, and began the trek back to Undertown. He died of his wounds in the mire, and had his toes mutilated by Screedius Tollinix.

[edit] I

  • Ilmus Pentephraxis was a leaguesman, possibly the brother of Ruptus or Ulbus Pentephraxis. He bought Maugin as a slave; however she was saved by Quintinius Verginix. Ilmus gave chase to Quint, but his ship was destroyed by The Galerider's keel blades, and he fell to his death.

[edit] J

  • Jervis was a Gnokgoblin crewmember aboard Skyraider. He served under Thunderbolt Vulpoon originally, but after Twig's mutiny, he helped sail the ship back to Undertown of his free will. Later, he crewed under Twig on his voyage in search of Riverrise. He died of Blackwater fever.

[edit] K

  • Keris was the daughter of Twig, and mother of Rook. In The Lost Barkscrolls, she was one of the first people to travel to The Freeglades.
  • Kobold the Wise was the leader of the thousand tribes in The Deepwoods. He lived some five to six thousand years before the books take place, known as the time of enlightenment. He united the tribes under the banner of the snake and trident, and resided at Riverrise. When the mother storm returned to the edge, the thousand tribes split up due to the mind storms and the location of Riverrise was lost, until Twig and his crew re-discovered it.

[edit] L

  • Linius Pallitax was the Most High Academe of Sanctaphrax, and dreamt of reviving the Great Library by restoring Earth-scholarship to Sanctaphrax. He unlocked the ancient laboratory, and accidentally created a Gloamglozer. The Gloamglozer set fire to the palace of shadows, where he resided, and he later died of his burns.

[edit] M

  • Maris Pallitax was Twig's mother. She met Quintinus Verginix in Sanctaphrax, and gradually became friends with him. She was wrongfully fostered by Heft and Dacia, two greedy undertowners, when her father died.
  • Maugin was a trog who failed to turn termagent. She was captured by the slaver Zelt Pink-eye, and sold to Ilmus Pentephraxis in Undertown. She was rescued by Quint, and joined his crew as a stone pilot when Ramrock was killed. She crewed aboard The Galerider, Stormchaser, and Edgedancer under Twig. She was the only crewmember (asides from Twig) to survive the Journey back from the catastrophic stormchasing mission. She was left by Twig at Riverrise, being told to wait for his return. She waited for aproximately fifty years, and presumably was reunited with Twig after he was carried off by a caterbird at the end of The Last of the Sky Pirates
  • Mother Horsefeather was a Shryke living in Undertown. She owned The Bloodoak Tavern, and dealed in loans on sky pirate ships. She originally suggested the Stormchasing voyage to Cloud Wolf in Stormchaser, and struck a deal with Twig, when he revealed the secret of safe Phraxdust production. She would have been considerably rich, had Twig not revealed the secret to the entire population by dropping shards of Stormphrax and instructions across Undertown from his sky ship.

[edit] O

  • Orbix Xaxis was the head of The Guardians of Night, and ruled New Sanctaphrax. He always wore a Phraxdust gas-mask, as he believed the air was contaminated. He died when he was struck by lightning in an attempt to heal the floating rock.
