The unnamed narrator is a high school student who is obsessed with death, particularly the blood and gore aspects of it. He is constantly checking out murder scenes because he likes to "stand where a body had once been". He also hopes that the murderer will return to the scene of the crime so he may talk with him.

He hides his gruesome interests and hobbies from his peers, so that outwardly, he seems perfectly normal. His obsessions flare when Yoru Morino transfers to his school, from the moment he sees her, he wants to watch her die. He gets his first chance at this when he finds out that his science teacher, Mr. Shinohara, was responsible for a series of crimes where the victims hands were cut off. He sneaks into Shinohara's house and steals all of the hands that he had accumulated, leaving a strand of his sisters hair, which is exactly like Morino's, behind. After Mr. Shinohara fails in trying to kill Morino, the narrator befriends Morino and starts to think about killing her himself.
After finding a notebook of a serial killer depicting the step-by-step explanation on how he kills his victims he and Morino start investigating the murders and discover a mutilated body of one of the victims. Shortly after Morino disappears, the narrator calmly sets out to find her because he's "interested in what happens to her..." After finding and confronting the serial killer, the manager at Morino's favorite restaurant, he finds out that she is still alive and is disappointed. After untying Morino he took the set of knives the manager had used as "Souvenirs"
Morino's second escape from death leaves him wanting to watch her die even more. When Morino stops showing up to school and rumors that a girl had been kidnapped come up he once again goes to casually look over the crime scene and meets a man desperately looking for something in the same area where the girl was kidnapped. After questioning the man and rattling him up quite a bit, the man changes the subject by inviting him over to his house. There he questions the man a little more and gets him to uncover where he had hid his victims. Discovering that it wasn't Morino who was kidnapped, but another girl from his school.

[edit] Mr. Shinohara's Victims

Exactly how many victims Mr. Shinohara had is undisclosed. All that is explained is that he would cut off the hand of his victim, letting the victim live, and take it home with him. This includes Adults, children, animals and even dolls.

[edit] The Restaurant Manager's Victims

  • Mitsue Kusuda — the manager's first victim. She was chased into a forest and after being caught, the manager slowly cut open her stomach.
  • Kasumi Nakanishi — After flirting with the manager at a bus stop she went with him into a small hut in a forest, where she was very slowly cut into pieces.
  • Nanami Mizuguchi — A good-looking young girl, bearing some resemblance to Yoru. She met the manager in a noodle shop. After getting to know him she followed him into a temple in a forest and was killed.

[edit] Mr. Saeki's Victims

  • Kousuke- The son of Mr. Saeki's next door neighbor who was good friends with Mr. Saeki. He was buried alive by Mr. Saeki, who left an air tube so he could breath while buried. He suffocated when Mr. Saeki poured water down the air tube, thus drowning him.
  • Highschool Couple- The girlfriend was kidnapped by Mr. Saeki, who mistook her for Yoru Morino. She is buried alive with an air tube, like Kousuke, and is very defiant towards Mr. Saeki, even taunting him while buried. She was killed when she committed suicide by stabbing a pen into her jugular vein. When her boyfriend found out he committed suicide by burying himself alive with her.

[edit] Other Victims

  • Yoru Morino- While doing a trick where she pretended to hang herself, the safety rope snapped and she was accidentally hung. Her twin sister, noticing her shoe prints were the only ones that showed in the mud, took up her identity and pretended she was the one that was hung.
  • Takami- Was killed in a knife fight by the narrator after kidnapping Yoru.
