[edit] Triple Champion Club

In Boxing a Triple Champion is that fighter that win titles or belts in at least 3 different weights or divisions.

Therefore Triple Champion Club is the informal term given to the selected group of fighters who have won three different titles in three totally different categories of weight. In the late twenty century it was a hard, not easy and remarkable achievement of the sport possibly securing one spot in the Boxing Hall of Fame with other immortals of the sport. In the beginning of the twenty one Century more fighters have achieved this feat requiring less effort because the numerous weight divisions (17) and the countless professional boxing entities that claim a "World" championship.

Example: Wilfredo Gómez won his first belt at 122 pounds later he net the 126 crown and finally won the 130 title to add to his resume. When a fighter is a Triple Champion he passes on to another level of excellence in boxing.

The first ever fighter to become a Triple Champion of boxing was Bob Fitzsimmons when he added the Light heavyweight crown to his world Middleweight and Heavyweight belts in November 25, 1903.

Barney Ross was the first ever boxer to hold at the same time two different world titles in two different weight divisions when he won 135 World Lightweight Title and 140 World Jr. Welterweight from the great Tony Canzoneri at 1933-06-23. Later Ross added the 147 World Welterweight Title from Jimmy McLarnin at 1934-05-28.

Henry Armstrong was the first ever man to hold at the same all his three titles in three divisions when he kept the 126 Cal-Mex World Featherweight Title, the 135 World Lightweight Title and the 147 World Welterweight Title.

Wilfred Benitez was the younger ever champion in any weight. Benitez won first the 140 WBA Light Welterweight Title from the legendary Antonio Cervantes at 1976-03-06. He moved up in weight to net the 147 WBC Welterweight Title from Carlos Palomino at 1979-01-14 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and finally won a third title once again moving to the higher division when he added the 154 WBC Super Welterweight Title from Maurice Hope at 1981-05-23.

The following lists are credited for all the boxers/fighters that win/won championships from the regular major entities and/or minor associations, plus the Ring Magazine champions and other criteria.

Still, boxing does not have an international governing body responsible for the organization and governance of the boxing titles, rules, etc such as the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) with the football or the Major League Baseball (MLB) operating professional baseball.

[edit] How the list is made

This list is not including any World Minor Tittles, The Ring World Championships, Linear Championships and/or the People’s Champion Titles. The general Boxing community accepts this list as the correct one. Only recognized belts from old international/national-world boxing commissions are accepted. Of course, any old boxing organization from the beginning (1920's - 1970's) of boxing is included here:

[edit] List of Triple Champions (Short) - Mayor titles only

[edit] List of Triple Champions (World Minor Titles, The Ring World Championships, People’s Champion Titles & Linear Championships)

[edit] How the list is made

  • The first column of the extreme left (Major titles only) refers to championships won from only major boxing entities such the WBC, the WBA, the IBF and the WBO. They are the organizations that generally considered as the 'real' ones.
  • The second column of the extreme left (Minor and Major titles) refers to any championships won from professional 'minor' boxing associations that are not yet well respected by the general boxing fan or public at 'world' level. Some of them, despite having tremendous champions and superstars that sometimes eclipse the champions of the major entities, are still in the shadows. Please, see the List of Minor Boxing Entities of the Triple Champions in this page.
  • Only the first championship by Boxing weight-class is added to the fighter not matter he later obtain or win additional belts in the same division.

Example number one: Sugar Ray Leonard is a five(5)times world champion in five(5)totally different weight categories:

  • He won his first title (147 pounds/WBC welterweight belt) in 1979-11-30 against Wilfred Benitez but later he also added the WBA Welterweight version from Thomas Hearns in 1981-09-16. So because Welterweight is the same division, not matter the boxing regulating body, his first championship counts only to proclaim him as the world Welterweight champ or two times Welter champion.
  • Leonard also won the world WBA light middleweight title (154 pounds) from Ayub Kalule in 1981-06-25 but he does not needed to win a second belt at this weight to be considered champion, so he is a one time world Light middleweight champ.

Example number two: Pernell Whitaker is a four(4)times champion in four(4)different divisions:

  • His first ever title was the world IBF lightweight title (135 pounds) at 1989-02-18 from Greg Haugen. Whitaker also won the other two versions (WBA/1990-08-11 from Juan Nazario & WBC/1989-08-20 versus Jose Luis Ramirez) of the world Lightweight title in the same division, but only will be included here the very first title (1989-02-18). So Whitaker is a three(3)times world champion in one weight division (Lightweight), but is a six(6) times champion in four(4) different divisions.
  • And every new title in different weight divisions will be only accepted in this list to proclaim the champions in multiple divisions.

Example number three: Vinny Pazienza is a three(3)times world champion in three different divisions:

  • Pazienza's first belt was for the IBF lightweight title(135) at 1987-06-07 from Greg Haugen. The IBF title is considered a legitimate world title such the WBC, the WBA and the WBO.
  • He won the WBA light middleweight title(154) at 1991-10-01 from Gilbert Dele. It's his second world title in two(2)different divisions.
  • His next 'world' title was the IBO Super Middleweight Title(168)in 1993-12-28 from Dan Sherry. The IBO is still not recognized as a real 'world' association by the boxing fans, national commissions and writers. But I added Pazienza's three(3) titles in three(3)different weight divisions because all the titles are professional ones and because maybe one day that 'world' titles will be legitimate recognised by the World.

[edit] List of Triple Champions (short) - Minor titles + Mayor titles

Note:

  • The new title (Super Featherweight/130 lbs) of Manny Pacquiao runs a fourth world title (not third)in four totally different weight divisions. He was included in the List of boxing quadruple champions already. But anyway Pacquiao's new belt can be found in this page at the List of Triple Champions (Only WBC, WBA, IBF & WBO major titles) at the top. Pacquiao third world title was the Ring 'World' Championship at Featherweight after defeating Marcos Antonio Barrera. Please, see the List of The Ring world champions to confirm this fact.
  • The Cruiserweight world title of James Toney is included also in the mentioned list as a major title (IBF). Toney won another minor titles at 175 (WBU)and 200 (WBU) and all are counted in the second table.

[edit] Triple Champions that won titles in other multiple divisions

Some fighters of this group or club were not sastified to win just the incredible milestone of three championships in three different weight divisions but to reach immortality in fourth, five and/or six other different divisions or categories. The multiple champions that won in four divisions are called Quadruple Champion; see the List of boxing quadruple champions. The titleholders that obtained five belts in the same number of weights are called Quintuple Champion; see the List of boxing quintuple champions. And the champs that conquisted six crowns in six different divisions are called the Sextuple Champions; see the List of boxing sextuple champions.

[edit] Almost Triple Champions Club

[edit] How the list is made

  • This list consist only of any boxer that tried in futile to become a champion in three different weight divisions. They all are Double Champions in two different divisions or weights. All their attempts to win a third division belt are documented in the following list.
  • For example: Hilario Zapata (champion in 108 Strawweight & 112 Flyweight) tried unsuccessfully to win the 115 world title from the 115 WBC Super Flyweight Titlist Sung-Kil Moon Seoul at 1993-02-27. Zapata only tried the feat in the next higher division. He never tried a second (or third) different division moving up in weight.
  • Another example: Hiroki Ioka who was champion at 105 & 108 Light flyweight and tried to obtain the third divisions title against three different world champions (David Griman, Saen Sor Ploenchit & Jose Bonilla) at 112 but losing all his respective efforts, plus trying to add anyway a third title in a still different weight category Super Flyweight against one champ(Satoshi Iida) although the result was again a lost.
