List of amphibia of Bulgaria

There are 17 amphibia species that inhabit the territory of Bulgaria. They include 12 frog species from five families and 5 salamander species from the family Salamandridae. The most recently discoverred species is the Edible Frog which was first registered in 1966. Some of the most common species include the European Green Toad, Yellow-bellied toad and Marsh Frog.

[edit] Order Anura (Frogs)

Bombinatoridae is an Old World toad family often referred to as Fire-bellied toads because of their brightly colored ventral sides which show that they are highly toxic. It includes two genera, Barbourula and Bombina, both of which have flattened bodies. Two species from the latter occur in Bulgaria.

Bombina is a small genus with eight species which inhabit the area between Spain and East Asia.

Bufonidae is a family of toads spread in the whole world with the exception of Australia and the islands in the Indian Ocean. The family includes 36 genera, only one of which is represented in Bulgaria.

Bufo is a large genus with around 250 species, two of which can be found in the territory of the country. The species of that genera are cosmopolitan and able to live under adverse conditions.

Hylidae or Tree Frogs is a large family with around 49 genera in 6 subfamilies spread throughout all continents with the exception of Antarctica. They usually inhabit tropical areas with warm and humid climate. In Europe it is represented by one genera.

Hyla is a genus of Tree Frogs which used to have more than 300 species but after a major revision it now only contains 32, one of which can be found ib Bulgaria.

Pelobatidae is a small family of frogs with only one genus and four species spread in Europe and Western Asia, two of which inhabit the territory of the country.

Ranidae is a wide-spread family also known as True Frogs. It includes 56 genera.

Rana is a genus of frogs which are characterized by their slim waists and smooth skin. It includes around 240 species, five of which can the seen in Bulgaria

Salamandridae is a family which consists of True Salamanders and Newts which inhabit the Northern Hemisphere. There are currently 20 genera with 74 species; of them two genera and five species can be observed in the country.

Salamandra is a family of small tailed amphibia. The genus includes 6 species one of which is found in Bulgaria.

Triturus is a genus of small newts, commonly known as Crested Newts. There are 4 species of which five inhabit the territory of the country.
