02 | "Memory of Blood" "Chi no Memorii" (血の記憶) |
April 14, 2008 |
Zero is shown coughing up a blood tablet in the beginning. It's Valentine's Day and an event is being hosted at Cross Academy. The Day Class girls are discussing and planning to give chocolates to the vampire that they have a crush on. Yuuki thinks about making her own to give to Kaname as a token of thanks. Meanwhile, Zero is struggling thoughout the episode to contain his thirst, especially when he's near Yuuki. When it's time for the Night Class to come out of their dorms and attend their classes, the two prefects allow them to give their chocolate and affections as they pass by while they supervise. Yuuki almost doesn't give her store-bought chocolate to Kaname (her attempt at making some didn't turn out well) when she sees his arms are full from chocolates that were given to him from other admirers until she gets knocked down by some impatient Day Class girls and her wrapped gift gets thrown up into the sky, where Zero catches it and throws it to Kaname, to Yuki's discontent. Later on, when Kaname and his bodyguard, Seiren are alone, he gives the other gifts to her and keeps only Yuuki's chocolate. When night falls, the Night class, excluding Ichijou, Kaname and Seiren, go to Zero and attempt to fight. Yuuki steps in. The Night Class decides to leave then because they know it would upset their dorm leader, Kaname, if any harm came to Yuuki. Yuuki gives Zero her only chocolate piece that she successfully made later. She feeds him the chocolate, and he chews it resentfully. He tells her to leave him alone, and walks out on her. Zero is found with blood tablets at the end of the episode...

Yuuki triumphantly seizes a packet of blood tablets, which aggravates Zero, and he snatches it back quickly and leaves. Yuuki runs after him and follows him into the city. Still haunted by her fear of vampires, she follows a boy into an isolated area of the city, attempting to give him his balloon back. She is then chased and attacked by the boy who is an ex-human vampire and another former human vampire. Kaname appears and destroys the vampire and brings Yuuki back to the dorm. Later, Yuuki searches for Zero and finds him on the stairway, appearing uncomfortable. She tries to talk to him, but he tells her to stay away. Cringing at his reaction, she complies and apologizes for bothering him and is about to turn back when Zero feels guilty and grabs her hand, about to say something when the gauze on Yuuki's hand unravels and he smells the blood leaking from her cut. After that, he suddenly clutches her, unable to control himself, licks her neck and finally bites her. In shock, Yuuki manages to push him away and discovers that Zero is a vampire. A servant comes and hands Ichijou a note, saying that his grandfather, Ichiou, is coming for a visit. This news causes Ichijou complete panic. That night, everyone gathers to greet Ichiou as he comes, as well as Kaname. Ichiou nearly draws blood from Kaname, but Ruka and Aidou stop him. Aidou tells Ichiou that drawing blood from a pureblood is a vampire's greatest taboo, but Kaname slaps him for that. Later, Ruka offers her blood to Kaname, but he refuses. Ruka cries into Akatsuki's shirt, thinking she'll never understand Kaname's thoughts. As Ichiou leaves, he tells Ichijou privately to serve Kaname well, and to keep an eye on him. Aidou sees Yuki and pulls her into the building, while listening to the jealous outcries of the girls left outside. Zero then angrily comes to get Yuuki, scolding her for getting abducted. Members of the night class talk about the ball, while elsewhere, the chairman asks Yuki to guide a Night Class transfer student named Kurenai Maria who was admitted late. Maria tells Yuki that she looks delicious. Later, when Maria attends class, the students react with hostility towards her boldness. Aidou also seems shocked by her resemblance to the pure blood Hiou Shizuka. Suspicious, he starts spying on her. Leaving the classroom, Maria meets Yuki conversing with Zero. Seeing Maria, Zero suddenly points his gun at her, remembering “that woman”. Unsure, though, he doesn’t shoot. Later, Aidou talks to Akatsuki about Maria and Hiou Shizuka. The next morning, the Day Class President warns Yuki to do well on exams or else their class will have to do dance setup. Afterwards, Zero and Yuki see Takuma chasing Maria around the school campus. Yuuki starts to run after, but Zero warns her to stay away from Maria. Then, Aidou comes up and suddenly hugs Yuuki. Zero takes Aidou aside to talk about Maria as Yuki flees a hoard of jealous girls, leaving Zero and Aidou behind. Yuuki escapes by jumping onto the terrace, where she meets Takuma. Takuma explains why he’s tagging after Maria and describes the night class’s loyalty to Kaname. Meanwhile, Zero asks Aidou if Maria has any connection to Shizuka. Aidou replies that Zero should know best since he has a blood bond with Shizuka. At night, Kaname toys with his chess board, telling Takuma to handle Maria since Kaname’s own actions are restricted. Kaname confides that all the “pieces” Maria wants are at Cross Academy because he’s collected them here himself. Meanwhile, Maria is with her manservant. Maria talks to herself, saying how happy she is and teasingly pretends to bite her companion. Corresponds to +/- Chapter 15 of the manga.

Maria reaches out to Yuki’s face, but Zero pulls Yuki back. Maria smiles. Alone together, Zero again tells Yuki to avoid Maria. Later that night, Zero tutors Yuki and says his old neck bite aches. Yuki asks what’s worrying Zero and goes to make coffee. Zero comes up behind her and twines their hands. He says Yuki may be why he’s still alive. Then, he leaves. Meanwhile, Maria and Kaname converse. He knows she’s not Maria and accuses her of toying with everyone. She retorts that he shouldn’t talk morals because they are alike. Kaname plays with a chess Queen and knocks it over. Yuki realizes that Maria is why Zero’s acting funny and runs after him. Zero faces down Maria but can’t kill her. She says he can’t kill his master, who made him a vampire. She tries to kiss him, but he jerks back. She and Zero fight. Alarmed, Yuki calls his name, but Kaname puts her asleep. Power crackles from his hand over Yuki’s head as he says that he cannot lose Yuki, but that Zero can die if he’s that weak. Zero faints, injured, and Maria tells her manservant to carry him away. The next day, Yuki spaces out during exams as she looks at Zero’s empty seat. Afterwards, she meets Kaname, and they talk about the ball and dancing. Departing, Takuma notes that Yuki has utterly forgotten last night. Kaname says she’s happier that way. Yagari is with Headmaster Cross, thinking how odd Kaname’s kindness to Yuki is. Cross says Kaname told him to admit Maria and that vampires handle their own affairs. Yagari asks if Zero is a vampire but Cross plays stupid. Meeting at twilight, Maria unlocks Yuki’s memories of last night and offers a deal. She'll tell how to save Zero from becoming a level E if Yuki will do something for her. Meanwhile, Zero dreams of Shizuka and Ichiru. Upon first seeing her, Ichiru finds her beautiful but Zero says she’s a vampire. Ichiru says that Zero amazing and makes up for Ichiru's mediocrity. That night, Ichiru asks if the vampire they saw earlier will be killed and if kindly Zero will be able to hunt vampires. Zero says Master will teach him to. Then, Shizuka attacks the Kiryuus, revenge for killing “that person.” Zero sees Ichiru standing next to Shizuka, smiling. He wakes up. Seeing the manservant, he greets Ichiru.
