Berlin currently has four universities:
- Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, It has been known since 1949 under that name. Some older references call it Universität Berlin (University of Berlin), reflecting the outdated fact of being the city's sole university. Originally founded as alma mater beroliniensis in 1809. Since 1828 Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität, divided in 1934 into Landwirtschaftliche Hochschule (1881) (Agricultural college) and Tierarzneischule (1790) (Veterinary medicine).
- Freie Universität Berlin, founded in 1948 in West Berlin's neighborhood of Dahlem. Currently the largest in the city.
- Technische Universität Berlin, It represents the continuation of the institutions Bergakademie (1770), Bauakademie (1799), Technischen Schule (1821) and the Technischen Hochschule Charlottenburg (1879)
- Universität der Künste, called until 2001 Hochschule der Künste Berlin, A continuation of the Hochschule für die bildenden Künste (1875)
Additionally, Berlin concentrates a large number of colleges and research institutions.
