[edit] Toa Mata/Nuva

[edit] Tahu

  • Toa Nuva (formerly Toa Mata) of Fire

Tahu is one of the Toa sworn to protect the Great Spirit Mata Nui, and is currently trying to wake him from his endless sleep. Tahu is brash and hotheaded, sometimes to the anger of his teammates. Tahu's Kanohi is the Great Hau, the Great Kanohi mask of Shielding, that is able to form a protective forcefield, but is useless against ambushes. As a Toa Mata, he carried a flame sword; as a Toa Nuva this became twin Magma Swords that combine to form a surfboard to traverse lava. Now, Tahu is working in the swamp under Karda Nui with Gali and Onua. This team is called the Toa Mistika, where Tahu has a spinning blade and a blaster. Tahu has been subject to the Krana of the Bohrok swarms for a short time.

[edit] Onua

  • Toa Nuva (formerly Toa Mata) of Earth

Onua is one of the Toa sworn to protect the Great Spirit Mata Nui, and is currently trying to wake him from his endless sleep. Onua is very sensible as a Toa, and tends to remain silent unless he has something important to say. Onua's mask is the Pakari, the Mask of Strength, that enhances its wearer's physical strength. His original Mata "tools" were his clawed hands; as a Toa Nuva he carried two chainsaw-like Quake Breakers. Onua gets along very well with the rest of the team, but especially with Toa Lewa ever since he saved the Toa of air several times including from an infected mask and a mind-controlling Krana.

[edit] Gali

  • Toa Nuva (formerly Toa Mata) of Water

Toa Gali is one of the Toa sworn to protect the Great Spirit Mata Nui, and is currently trying to wake her from her endless sleep. Toa Gali is wise, and she stresses the importance of unity within her team beyond anything. Toa Gali's mask is a Great Kaukau Mask of Water Breathing. In her original form, her "tools" were her water hooks; as a Toa Nuva, she carried two Aqua Axes.

[edit] Lewa

  • Toa Nuva (formerly Toa Mata) of Air

Lewa is one of the Toa sworn to protect the Great Spirit Mata Nui, and is currently trying to wake him from his endless sleep. Lewa is extremely playful and energetic, though he has calmed down a bit after such tendencies got him into trouble. Lewa's mask is a Miru Mask of Levitation. He originally carried an axe, and his Toa Nuva tools are a pair of Air Katana. In Karda Nui he carries a razor sharp sword and a Midak Skyblaster. Lewa's mask is the Miru Nuva. Lewa has also been subject to the mind control of the Bohrok swarms the longest, which has affected the relationship he has with the other Toa Nuva.

[edit] Pohatu

  • Toa Nuva (formerly Toa Mata) of Stone

Pohatu is one of the Toa sworn to protect the Great Spirit Mata Nui, and is currently trying to wake him from his endless sleep. Pohatu is very friendly and outgoing and is always dependable. Pohatu's Kanohi is the Kakama, the Mask of Speed, that enables its wearer to move at great speeds. In both original and Nuva forms, his main "tools" are his large armored feet. As a Toa Nuva, he also has two sets of Climbing Claws that can be combined into a Kodan Ball to kick as a projectile weapon. In Karda Nui, he carries twin Osprey-like propellers. He mounts a Midak Skyblaster on his shoulder. He wears the Kakama Nuva.

[edit] Kopaka

  • Toa Nuva (formerly Toa Mata) of Ice

Kopaka is one of the Toa sworn to protect the Great Spirit Mata Nui, and is currently trying to wake him from his endless sleep. Kopaka is the loner of his group, preferring to be distant and cold to everyone. Kopaka's mask is an Akaku Mask of X-Ray Vision, it is also equipped with a telescoping eyepiece that lets him see over long distances. When he arrived on Mata Nui, he carried an Ice sword and Ice shield; upon becoming a Toa Nuva, his shield was enlarged and his sword became a double-ended Ice Blade. In Karda Nui Kopaka is shown carrying a Midak Skyblaster tipped with a Blizzard Blade. Kopaka has an Akaku Nuva, and it has changed because it is part of his adapting armor.

[edit] Takanuva

  • Toa of Twilight (formerly Light)

Takanuva is the legendary Toa of Light. Once a Matoran named Takua, he found the Avohkii Mask of Light and was sent with his best friend Jaller to find the legendary Toa of Light that it belonged to. Takua was an Av-matoran from Karda Nui. The matoran from Karda Nui have a high chance of becoming Toa. Takua eventually realized his destiny and put on the mask himself, becoming the Toa of Light they were looking for and renaming himself "Takanuva". He then fought Makuta in a battle that seemingly led to Makuta's death. Then he served as the sole protector of the city of Metru Nui, while the Toa Nuva were off on their latest mission. Takanuva wields the Staff of Light which he can use to focus his light power.

Later, Takanuva was attacked by a Shadow Leech, but was rescued by the Order of Mata Nui. However, the leech had drained half of Takanuva's light power and replaced it with shadow, making him a "Toa of Twilight". He was given a mission by the Order to give information to the Toa Nuva in the Core. Brutaka then accidentally transported Takanuva to a parallel universe (due to a slight malfunction in his mask) where Toa, led by Toa Tuyet and Toa Nidhiki, have created a Toa Empire with a dictatorship government.

He has since given up his Toa power and is now a Turaga of Metru Nui. Matau wore a Mahiki Mask of Illusion and he carried two Aero-Slicers.

[edit] Onewa

Onewa wore a Komau Mask of Mind Control and he carried two Proto Pitons.

[edit] Nuju

  • Toa Metru (temporarily Toa Hordika) of Ice

Nuju was one selected by Toa Lhikan to protect the Matoran of Metru Nui in the time of the Great Cataclysm. Nuju prefers to work alone, and is good at thinking through future consequences of actions. He has since given up his Toa power and is now a Turaga of Metru Nui. Nuju wore the Matatu Mask of Telekinesis and he carried a pair of Crystal Spikes.

[edit] Toa Inika/Mahri

[edit] Jaller

  • Toa Mahri (formerly Toa Inika) of Fire

Jaller and his team are currently on a desperate mission to save the life of the Great Spirit Mata Nui. Jaller is a courageous leader, and is careful to take his team's concerns into account before acting. He originally wore a Kanohi Calix Mask of Fate as an Inika, and his current mask is an Arthron Mask of Sonar. He carried an Energized Flame Sword and a modified zamor launcher as a Toa Inika and an aquatic fire blade and an Cordak Blaster as a Toa Mahri.

[edit] Nuparu

  • Toa Mahri (formerly Toa Inika) of Earth

Nuparu and his team are currently on a desperate mission to save the life of the Great Spirit Mata Nui. A former engineer, Nuparu remains a thinker and his strategies are often successful. His Inika tools were Great Claws and a Laser Drill. As a Toa Mahri, he uses a Razor-Edged Protosteel Shield. His mask was a Kadin Mask of Flight while he was an Inika; but upon becoming a Toa Mahri he gained a Volitak Mask of Stealth.

[edit] Hahli

  • Toa Mahri (formerly Toa Inika) of Water

Toa Hahli and her team are currently on a desperate mission to save the life of the Great Spirit Mata Nui. Originally concerned about abusing her power, Toa Hahli has grown in confidence since their mission has led underwater. She originally wielded a Laser Harpoon; in her Mahri form she has a set of Protosteel Talons as well as wing-like fins. Her Inika mask was an Elda Mask of Detection. As a Toa Mahri, she wears a Faxon Mask of Kindred.

[edit] Kongu

  • Toa Mahri (formerly Toa Inika) of Air

Kongu and his team are currently on a desperate mission to save the life of the Great Spirit Mata Nui. Though he has had a string of bad luck in his circumstances so far, Kongu continues to joke around and lighten the mood. As a Toa Inika, he used an Energy Crossbow; as a Toa Mahri he is missing a melee weapon and uses a second Cordak Blaster in its place. Unfortunately he hasn't been able to fully control either of his masks: first a Suletu Mask of Telepathy, then a Zatth Mask of Summoning.

[edit] Hewkii

  • Toa Mahri (formerly Toa Inika) of Stone

Hewkii and his team are currently on a desperate mission to save the life of the Great Spirit Mata Nui. A dependable ally, Hewkii is continually focused on getting the job done. Hewkii originally wore a Sanok Mask of Accuracy and carried a Laser Axe and Climbing Chain. When he became a Mahri, his axe transformed into an Aqua Warblade with an electrified chain, and his mask became a Garai Mask of Gravity.

[edit] Matoro

  • Toa Mahri (formerly Toa Inika) of Ice

Matoro and his team are currently on a desperate mission to save the life of the Great Spirit Mata Nui. Though at first unconvinced he belonged on a team of Toa, he has since accepted it, but is now wondering just how far his team will have to go to complete their mission. He used an Energized Ice Sword as a Toa Inika, which was replaced with a Twin Cutter as a Toa Mahri. He originally had an Iden Mask of Spirit, and wore a Tryna Mask of Reanimation. Later above Karda Nui, a voice told him to don the Ignika, and thus he did. His body turned into energy, killing him in the process but reviving Mata Nui. As his last conscious act, he allowed the other Toa Mahri to breathe air again, and sent them back to Metru Nui so they would not die at the hands of the Barraki.

Bomonga's mask is unknown and he carries a Seismic Spear. In the Dark Mirror Dimension that Takanuva was accidentally transported to by the Kanohi Olmak, Bomonga was a Toa assigned to guard the Kanohi Vahi. [edit] Other Toa

[edit] Dume

Main article: Turaga
  • Toa of Fire, team unknown

Turaga Dume was once a Toa, but nothing more is known about him or his team. (Though it can be presumed that Dume wore a Kiril Mask of Regeneration as a Toa, as he now wears a Noble-level Kiril.) Dume's weapons are unknown.

[edit] Helryx

  • Toa of Water, first Toa ever

Helryx was the first Toa ever created in the BIONICLE universe, and is the leader of the Order of Mata Nui. She had a role in building the City of Metru Nui. Recently, she went to Metru Nui along with Toa Krakua and Brutaka to give Takanuva a new mission and teleport him to Karda Nui.

[edit] Ignika

After the rebirth of Mata Nui, the Ignika Mask of Life used its power to create a body for itself. Equipped with a sword, skyboard, and "Midak Skyblaster", he is determined to be a hero. He is often reckless but can afford it with all that power he has.[1]

Series writer Greg Farshtey on Toa Ignika:[2]

It is determined to be a hero, because it respects [Toa] Matoro and the fact that Matoro accepted his fate without fear. The mask is curious about what it would be like to be admired, and have friends, but it doesn't really understand moral concepts of good and evil. If it feels the Toa are being hostile or attacking, it will turn on them, regardless of whether they are heroes or not. In many ways, it has the emotional reactions and understanding of a very young and sheltered being.

Ignika formed his body in a swamp below Karda Nui after being used by Matoro.

[edit] Jovan

  • Toa of Magnetism, team unknown

Jovan was a Toa of Magnetism and the leader of the only team of Toa that has reached the Ignika Mask of Life (prior to the Toa Inika), and they used it to heal the Great Spirit - though not all of the Toa survived the resulting incident.[3] He also met Toa Lesovikk sometime in his life. Jovan later became the Turaga of the Matoran living near Mount Valmai (where the mask was hidden) and was killed in the Great Cataclysm when part of the land mass broke off and became the island of Voya Nui. Jovan's mask was a Kadin Mask of Flight, and he wielded a Magnetic Bolt Launcher. He also carried an early model of Zamor Launcher, whose spheres could halt the powers of enemy weapons.[4] For information on Jovan after he became a Turaga, see Turaga (Bionicle)#Jovan.

[edit] Krakua

  • Toa of Sonics, team unknown (possibly none)

Krakua is a future Toa of Sonics who will be the lone defender of a mysterious island fortress. Using his Suletu Mask of Telepathy, he stays ahead of his enemies by reading their thoughts. Krakua has the power of Sonics, or sound, and can use his sword to unleash shockwaves that can shatter mountains.[5] Krakua was able to communicate from his time in the future to Toa Vakama in the past during the latter's retrieval of the Vahi Mask of Time. In the present day, he gave Toa Lesovikk information that someone comes to take away threats that have been captured.[6] He is currently in Metru Nui for reasons unknown.

[edit] Lesovikk

  • Toa of Air, first ever team (unnamed)

Lesovikk is a Toa of Air and the last remaining member of the first Toa team. In their final battle against a group of Zyglak, his momentary hesitation cost the other seven Toa their lives. He returned home to find that the local Turaga had gone mad and shipped all of his Matoran charges off to the realm of Karzahni, including his best friends Sarda and Idris. Failing to rescue his friends (and unaware that they had already been sent to Voya Nui), Lesovikk wandered the world convinced he is unworthy of his title. One person he met on his travels was Toa Jovan,[7] and he also had an encounter with the Rahi Nui and saved an island from the Visorak.[8] He constantly tried to enter Karzahni's realm but was repeatedly repulsed by its Manas guards.

Hearing that Karzahni himself had left his realm and gathered some Zyglak to attack an underwater city, he followed his enemies to the Pit and was mutated by its waters, seeking to destroy two of his worst enemies in one blow. He was there reunited with Sarda, only to find himself facing Karzahni in combat. While he put up a good fight, he broke off the battle when Sarda was endangered. He now swears he will not just stop Karzahni, but completely end his threat by destroying him. Idris has since joined the two, and they witnessed Karzahni having his mind destroyed - something that Lesovikk feared would make his foe even more dangerous. He began to plan a trap, but Karzahni had already sprung his own, giving him a vision of his team's final battle - only this time, the Toa were victorious against an acid cloud. The vision seemed to last for millennia until Zyglak were mentioned, causing Lesovikk to remember what really happened. The vision fell apart, leaving Lesovikk back in the ocean vowing revenge.

Lesovikk's mask is a Faxon Mask of Kindred that allows him to copy abilities of like creatures, and he carries an Air Sword. He also rides a sea sled that is equipped with a Cordak Blaster.

In the Dark Mirror serial, he is an enemy of the empire and one of the top fugitives of it. He defeats Toa Bomonga, Toa Kualus and Jaller and takes the mask of Time, then he speaks to Takanuva, and what they do after that is still unknown.

[edit] Lhikan

  • Toa of Fire, unnamed Metru Nui team

Lhikan was the last remaining Toa on Metru Nui before the coming of the Toa Metru. He led a team of eleven Toa that traveled to Metru Nui with the mission to destroy the Kanohi Dragon. He became a Turaga in order to give the Toa Metru their powers and was eventually killed by Teridax. Toa Lhikan wore a Hau Mask of Shielding and wielded two Fire Greatswords that could be combined into a glider board or a shield.

[edit] Nidhiki

  • Toa of Air, unnamed Metru Nui team

Nidhiki was a member of Toa Lhikan's team until he was exiled for trying to betray the Toa during the war with the Dark Hunters. He joined the Dark Hunters after his banishment and was doomed never to leave when Roodaka turned him into an insectoid monster. Ironically, he was scared of and disgusted by insects. Nidhiki wore a Volitak Mask of Stealth and his weapon was a scythe.

[edit] Nikila

  • Toa of Lighting, first ever team (unnamed)

Toa Nikila was one of the first eight Toa to ever band together as a team, along with Lesovikk. Toa Nikila, along with all the others but Lesovikk were killed during a battle against the Zyglak. Toa Nikila wielded a trident and wore a Mask of Possibilities, which has the power to alter possibilities, so that something extremely unlikely to happen will become certain to happen.[9]

[edit] Tuyet

  • Toa of Water, unnamed Metru Nui team

Toa Tuyet was a Toa of Water who brought a powerful artifact called a Nui Stone with her from her home island, but the Dark Hunters wanted the stone as well. To keep the Hunters away, she murdered three Matoran and made Lhikan and Nidhiki think the Hunters were responsible. When her lie was discovered, she amplified her power with the Nui Stone and went mad with the power she received, but was defeated. The Order of Mata Nui banished her to the Pit soon afterward, and she eventually died in the Great Cataclysm under unknown circumstances. Makuta later brought Toa Mahri Matoro to her remains, having him use his mask power and reanimate her body so that he could claim the Nui Stone shards embedded in her armor. Toa Tuyet's tool was a barbed broadsword, and she wore a Great Mask of Intangibility.[10]

[edit] Naho

Toa of Water, unnamed Metru Nui team Naho was among the eleven Toa who gathered and formed a Toa team to defend Metru Nui. She was killed by the dark hunter Eliminator

[edit] Unnamed Toa

  • The first team ever had eight members, including Lesovikk and Toa Nikila. The elements of the other members were Fire, Gravity, Iron, Sonics, Stone, and Water. The team's last battle was against a group of Zyglak and were defeated,in which only Lesovikk survived.[11]
  • Little is known about the team of eleven that Lhikan led beyond the fact that Nidhiki, Tuyet, and Naho were members. Some didn't stay in Metru Nui after the Kanohi Dragon was dealt with, and more left over the years. Of the ones remaining, most were killed by the Dark Hunter "Eliminator" while trying to seal off all gates to Metru Nui. A Kakama Mask of Speed was found by one of the gates, suggesting that it belonged to one of these members.[12] Of the original eleven, four were Toa of Ice.[13] It is also known that Chronicler Kodan disappeared while in the company of Toa closing the gates, indicating that he met the same fate.
  • Back when Lhikan was still a rookie, he was among many Toa guarding a fortress that was besieged by Frostelus. The fortress housed the Makoki stone that included secret Brotherhood of Makuta information; and while this group of Toa seemed to be suspicious of the Brotherhood, Lhikan was not yet aware of the stone's importance and it appears that he held no suspicions. One of these Toa controlled plant life, and two others wielded a mace and a flail, respectively, as weapons. Two thieves, who would later become Piraka, stole the stone the day before the Frostelus' final assault which left Lhikan as the only survivor.[14]
  • Besides Nidhiki, other Toa have been known to join the Dark Hunters. A Toa of Air who felt betrayed by his team is now the Hunter codenamed "Spinner". The Hunter codenamed "Savage" was once a Toa Hordika who lost control to his feral side. And a Toa of Fire and a Toa of Earth had the Spear of Fusion fired on them as they merged into a Toa Kaita, fusing them permanently and driving them mad; this being is now known as "Prototype" and wears what looks like a mutated Ruru.[15]

There were also a few Toa who were briefly mentioned in the books as victims of Dark Hunters.

  • Lariska had killed a Toa of Gravity, as she had practiced with levitation disks and he was not prepared to fight someone with experience in zero-gravity combat.[16]
  • Zaktan once mauled a Toa of Plasma. All that was left of him was half a mask, some armor shards, and a puddle of something that Avak was not sure he wanted to identify.[17] But it is unknown whether the Toa is dead - as a Toa can survive without armor and mask. [18]
  • Avak and Hakann discussed a Toa of Sonics that "objected" on their last mission; Hakann commented "Sort of a Toa of Silence now, isn't he? Dead silence." This is confirmed not to be Toa Krakua.[19]
  • As of Hakann and Vezok's recruitment seven thousand years ago, the Shadowed One had a Toa trapped in stasis in his throne room.[20]
