- Note
^ g: The Colts are the only team that played a pre AFL-NFL merger Super Bowl for the NFL, and then moved to the AFC in 1970. Although members of the old NFL before the 1970 merger, the Steelers and Browns did not play in a Super Bowl while still members of that league.
^ h: The Seahawks switched conferences with the Buccaneers in 1976 but switched back to the NFC in 2002 due to an NFL realignment plan after the Houston Texans were admitted. They reached the Super Bowl for the first time in 2005.
[edit] Teams with no Super Bowl appearances
- NFL league champions prior to Super Bowl I in the 1966 NFL season.
- Arizona Cardinals - NFL champions in 1925 and 1947, both as Chicago Cardinals. Yet to appear in a NFC Championship Game.
(Note: The Cardinals' 1925 championship is controversial, see 1925 NFL Championship controversy for details.)
- Detroit Lions - NFL champions in 1935, 1952, 1953, and 1957. Appeared in a NFC Championship game in 1991.
- Cleveland Browns - NFL champions in 1950, 1954, 1955, and 1964. Appeared in two other NFL championship games in 1968 and 1969 and in three AFC Championship Games in 1986, 1987, and 1989.
(This refers to the team that the league officially views as one continuous franchise that began in 1946 but suspended operations from 1996-1998, and resumed play in 1999. The Baltimore Ravens were an expansion team created in 1996 with former Cleveland Browns players, and have won one Super Bowl since.)
- Jacksonville Jaguars, 1995 expansion team. Appeared in two AFC Championship Games in 1996 and 1999.
- New Orleans Saints, 1967 expansion team. Appeared in a NFC Championship Game in 2006.
- Houston Texans, 2002 expansion team. Yet to appear in the NFL playoffs.
