List of Stargate SG-1 characters
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a list of prominent fictional characters in the series Stargate SG-1. Spanning ten years, Stargate SG-1 has developed an extensive and detailed backdrop of diverse characters. Owing to the huge numbers of characters they have been subdivided by race below. Many of the characters are members of alien species discovered while exploring the galaxy through the Stargate, although there are an equal number of characters from offworld human civilizations. While Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis are separate shows, they take part in the same fictional universe, so no character is, internally, show-specific. On occasion, the Asgard are seen in Atlantis, and in "Critical Mass" the Goa'uld, while the Wraith featured in SG-1 in the episode "The Pegasus Project".

[edit] Main characters
Except for the commander of the topic-secret Stargate Command military base (SGC), all main characters of Stargate SG-1 are members of the SG-1 team (Stargate Team 1), the primary unit of the SGC in the show. SG-1's duties include first contact, reconnaissance and combat, diplomacy, initial archaeological surveying, and technological assessment.
The composition of SG-1 changes several times during the series' run. In the first five seasons, SG-1 consists of U.S. Air Force Colonel Jack O'Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) as its commanding officer, Air Force Captain/Major Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) as O'Neill's second-in-command, the egyptologist Dr. Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks), and the alien Teal'c (Christopher Judge). Corin Nemec plays the alien Jonas Quinn, Daniel Jackson's replacement in the six season, but the old team composition is restored for season seven. Lieutenant Colonel Samantha Carter assumes command over SG-1 in season eight when Colonel Jack O'Neill is promoted to Brigadier-General, replacing General George Hammond (Don S. Davis) as the new commander of the SGC. The three-member SG-1 unit unofficially disbands after season eight, but is brought back together by their new commander Lieutenant Colonel Lt. Colonel Cameron Mitchell (Ben Browder) in season nine. The alien Vala Mal Doran (Claudia Black) joins SG-1 in the middle of the tenth season. General Hank Landry (Beau Bridges) is commander of the SGC in seasons nine and ten. The membership of SG-1 varies in several alternative universes.[1]
[edit] Jack O'Neill
Played by Richard Dean Anderson, Colonel Jack O'Neill is a United States Air Force officer who leads the first mission through the Stargate in the original film (where he was played by Kurt Russell), and becomes leader of SG-1 for the first eight seasons of Stargate SG-1. Promoted to Brigadier General in season eight, he takes charge of Stargate Command. Promoted again to Major General, he is reassigned to Washington and becomes a recurring character in seasons nine and ten. He also appears in Stargate: Continuum, and is a recurring character in Stargate Atlantis.
[edit] Daniel Jackson
Played by Michael Shanks, Dr. Daniel Jackson is a brilliant Egyptologist. Shunned by the academic world due to his farfetched theories in the original film (where he was played by [James Spader]]), he is part of the original mission through the Stargate and has been part of SG-1 since the start. During his ascended time during season 6, he is just a recurring character. Daniel Jackson appears in Stargate: The Ark of Truth; Stargate: Continuum.
[edit] Samantha Carter
Played by Amanda Tapping, Samantha "Sam" Carter is a scientist as well as a USAF officer. Holding the rank of captain, she joins SG-1 in the pilot episode of Stargate SG-1 and has been a member from seasons 1 through 10. She has seen three promotions to her last-seen rank of (full-bird) Colonel. She also appears in Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum. After her time on SG-1, the character becomes the leader of the Atlantis Expedition in Stargate Atlantis.
[edit] Teal'c
Played by Christopher Judge, Teal'c is a alien of the race Jaffa who is member of SG-1 during seasons 1 through 10. He also appears in Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum.
[edit] George Hammond
Played by Don S. Davis, George Hammond is an USAF Major General (later Lieutenant General) who commands Stargate Command for the first eight seasons. He is a recurring character in the other three seasons, apepars in Stargate: Continuum, and is a recurring character on Stargate Atlantis.
[edit] Jonas Quinn
Played by Corin Nemec, Jonas Quinn is an alien from the planet Langara. He replaces Daniel Jackson as a member of SG-1 in season 6, and is recurring in seasons 5 and 7.
[edit] Cameron Mitchell
Played by former Farscape actor Ben Browder, Cameron "Cam" Mitchell is introduced as a main character in the Season 9 premiere "Avalon" (2005), holding the military rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Ben Browder continued to play the character in Season 10 (2006–2007), and in the direct-to-DVD films Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum, scheduled to be released on DVD in 2008. The character is promoted to the rank of Colonel in the last film.[citation needed]
After the SG-1 team has gone separate ways after the Season 8 finale of Stargate SG-1, Lt. Col. Mitchell is assigned as new commanding officer of SG-1 in "Avalon". The first episodes of the ninth season show Mitchell's struggle to reunite the former SG-1 members under his command. With the aid of Lt. Col. Samantha Carter, Dr. Daniel Jackson, the silent Jaffa Teal'c, and the sexy alien thief Vala Mal Doran, Mitchell attempts to stop the Ori threat to the Milky Way galaxy, which started in "Avalon" and concludes in Stargate: The Ark of Truth.
[edit] Vala Mal Doran
Played by former Farscape actress Claudia Black, Vala Mal Doran was created by Damian Kindler and Robert C. Cooper as a guest character for the Season 8 episode "Prometheus Unbound" (2004). Because of the on-screen chemistry between Black's Vala and Michael Shanks' character Daniel Jackson, and the character's popularity with the producers and the audience, Claudia Black became a recurring guest star in Season 9 (2005–2006) and was promoted to main cast status in Season 10 (2006–2007).
"Prometheus Unbound" introduces Vala as a sexy and mischievous human with a Goa'uld background from an unnamed planet. In Season 9, Vala and Daniel set off the arc of the show's new villain race, the Ori. After giving birth to the Ori's new leader in Season 10, Vala joins the SG-1 team to stop the enemy. Claudia Black resumed her role in the 2008 direct-to-DVD film Stargate: The Ark of Truth, which finishes the Ori arc. Black will also appear as Vala and her Goa'uld alter ego Qetesh in Stargate: Continuum, scheduled to be released on DVD in 2008. For her portrayal of Vala, Claudia Black was nominated for a 2006 Saturn Award in the category "Best Supporting Actress on Television", and won a Constellation Award in the category "Best Female Performance in a 2006 Science Fiction Television" in 2007.
[edit] Hank Landry
Played by Beau Bridges, Henry "Hank" Landry is the commander of the SGC in seasons 9 and 10. He appears in Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum, and is a recurring character in Stargate Atlantis.
