- Forst Zinna, East Germany - a Soviet tank gets stuck on a level crossing and is hit by express train. 6 die, 33 are injured.

- 4 June - Arzamas train disaster - spark from electric train ignites gas leak. 91 killed

- 26 September - collision between a diesel locomotive and a school bus between Bataysk and Salsk in Rostov Oblast. 19 killed, including 18 children. 28 September was declared national day of mourning.[1]

- 12 January - a collision between a bus and a train in Russia kills 21 people and badly injured another 6. All the victims were workers at a factory on their way home aboard the bus, which was almost unrecognisable after the crash. Police say the accident happened at an unpatrolled railway level crossing in heavy fog south of Moscow. The train's engine car derailed but no-one on the train was hurt.

- August 13 - an intercity passenger train heading to St. Petersburg from Moscow (Moscow-Saint Petersburg Railway) derailed shortly before reaching Malaya Vishera after a bomb explosion. No one was killed, but the railway traffic was blocked in both directions for a few days.[2][3]
