[edit] The Student Council (Seitokai) Saga

[edit] Disc 1

  • 1. "The Rose Bride" The episode begins with a flashback explaining the story of the orphan girl and the prince who rescued her. It is her second term at Ohtori and it begins with Saionji mistreating Anthy. Saionji also happened to put Wakaba's love letter sent to him on a bulletin board. Enraged by this, Utena challenges Saionji to a duel.
  • 2. "For Whom the Rose Smiles" Having won the duel in the previous episode, Utena and Anthy move into the mansion on the campus reserved for the rose bride and the winning duelist. Saionji challenges Utena to a duel, which he loses.
  • 3. "On the Night of the Ball" Nanami organizes a ball and plots to embarrass Anthy there. The plot works, but Utena's quick thinking saves Anthy from embarrassment.
  • 4. "The Sunlit Garden - Prelude" This episode formally introduces Kaoru Miki and tells the story of his happy childhood playing the piano with his sister, who has given up playing. Miki thinks Anthy can fill that void.
  • 5. "The Sunlit Garden - Finale" Miki duels with Utena but loses.
  • 6. "Nanami, Beware!" Tsuwabuki Mitsuru falls in love with Nanami, who decides to take advantage of the situation.
  • 7. "Juri's Unfulfillment" This episode tells of the past of Arisugawa Juri, the captain of the school's fencing team.

  • 8. "The Great Curry High Trip" A mishap in home ec involving curry causes Utena and Anthy to switch minds.
  • 9. "The Castle Said to Hold Eternity" Saionji is expelled from school.
  • 10. "Nanami's Precious One" Nanami is chosen by the Ends of the World to duel with Utena.
  • 11. "Graceful and Ruthless; the One Who Picks the Flower" Utena duels with Touga and loses.
  • 12. "For Friendship, Perhaps" Utena dresses like a girl and mopes around. She duels Touga again, winning this time.
  • 13. "Plotting a Locus" Two men review Utena's duels so far.

[edit] The Black Rose Saga

  • 14. "The Boys of the Black Rose" This episode introduces Anthy's brother, Akio, and Nemuro Hall, where students go to be interviewed then go duel. Utena duels Kanae.
  • 15. "The Landscape Framed by Kozue" Utena duels Kozue.
  • 16. "Cowbell of Happiness" Nanami receives the gift of golden cowbell, which she begins to wear everywhere. She turns into a cow, then receives a nose ring, a picture of which is never shown.
  • 17. "Thorns of Death" Utena duels Shiori.

  • 18. "Mitsuru's Growing Pains" Mitsuru, eager to become an adult, duels Utena.
  • 19. "The Song of the Fallen Kingdom" Wakaba introduces the Onion Prince.
  • 20. "Wakaba Flourishing" Saionji is expelled from school, and he lives in Wakaba's apartment for a while. Utena has another duel.

  • 21. "Troublesome Insects" Turns out the three of Nanami's lackeys have crushes on Touga. One of them, Keiko, duels Utena.
  • 22. "Nemuro Memorial Hall" A flashback explains the significance of Professor Nemuro and the one hundred students who died.
  • 23. "Qualifications of a Duelist" Utena and Mikage finally duel, with unexpected results.

[edit] The Akio Ohtori Saga

  • 24. "The Secret Nanami Diary" Tsuwakubi's secret diary is discovered. It chronicles some recent events in Nanami's life and lists at least 24 of Tsuwakubi's plans to win Nanami's heart.
  • 25. "Their Eternal Apocalypse" Akio insists that Anthy and Utena move into his residence. Saionji once again duels Utena claiming to know "The world as it is" Cue the appearance of the Prince's Sword.
  • 26. "Miki's Nest Box (The Sunlit Garden /Arranged)" Miki, taking a ride with Akio and his own sister, duels Utena.

  • 27. "Nanami's Egg" Nanami comes to think she has laid an egg.
  • 28. "Whispers in the Dark" Ruka comes back after an illness and duels with Utena.
  • 29. "Azure Paler Than the Sky" Juri duels Utena again.
  • 30. "The Barefoot Girl" Akio hits on Utena.

  • 31. "Her Tragedy" Nanami steals Touga's cell phone and learns that Touga's blood type is A, not B like the rest of the family, leading her to believe they are not related by blood.
  • 32. "The Romance of the Dancing Girls" Still angry over the revelation, Nanami duels Utena.
  • 33. "The Prince Who Runs Through the Night" Akio plays on a Radio Show, A clip show.

[edit] The Apocalypse Saga

[edit] Disc 9

  • 34. "The Rose Signet" The shadow girls put on a play, The Tale of the Rose.
  • 35. "The Love That Blossomed in Wintertime" Utena tries hard to remember something important.
  • 36. "And the Doors of Night Open" Touga duels Utena and loses. Utena finds out the truth about Akio and Anthy.

[edit] Disc 10

  • 37. "The One to Revolutionize the World" Utena at length decides to duel for the power to revolutionize the world, with "true friendship" as motive.
  • 38. "The Ends of the World" Akio reveals that the dueling arena is a projection.
  • 39. "Someday we will Shine Together" Ultimately, Utena is able to save Anthy before Utena disappears in the Million Swords of Hate. Back at Ohtori, Anthy pledges to find her, leaving the school and the duels behind, much to Akio's dismay.
